Far Cry 5

Anybody here playing newest Far Cry game? To my surprise its getting pretty positive reception from players so far - game-play and performance wise (Primal wasnt as good received as I remember).

I'd heard it was lots of fun combat wise but no story at all. Fairly typical for the series. I dont understand why they can't put at least a half decent story into it. The series sells like hot cakes so a little something for the story orientated player on top of what they already do wouldn't hurt.

Sale ... mega sale purchase then maybe I'll buy it.

Yup loving it. FC3 was my last one. 5 is 1st farcry on console (PS4)

Barely scrapped the surface after 4hrs. Got ma gunz Got ma dug Away walkin around having some fun. Lots of nooks and crannies to dive into, gameplay and map wise.

Playing it, my first far cry game too cause the setting intrigued me and the actual exploration instead of radio towers thing made me interested. It's pretty damn good, but don't expect the moon it's still ubisoft.

I'm playing it. It's the best of the series, in my opinion. It still has many of the Far Cry quirks (overly aggressive wildlife, for instance), but mostly it's just a really nice, big playground, with lots to see and do. The story is dark and sometimes dumb, but good enough to draw me in a bit.

I managed to steal a helicopter and got my first view from the air. Wow. Now to find some rockets somewhere... :p

They toned down most of the stuff I didn't like in the previous Far Cry games -- crafting, climbing stupidly tall towers -- and stealth actually works fairly reasonably.

There are many ways to go about the game, and some of the puzzles are pretty darn cool.

It IS still Ubisoft, but this is pretty good game. I'm enjoying it.

Thanks all for opinions!

That sounds pretty great to be honest, looks like they indeed improved over Far Cry 2/3 - very tempted to get the game coz I need new "playground" for my FPS side hehe, still will wait for sale.

being from Ubisoft - is the map a damned mess of Icons etc?

No, but here's why:

--> No radio towers that reveal regions and all their quests.
--> You learn about nearby POI (quests, collectibles, etc..) from actually speaking to people and exploring the map.

They may not seem like huge changes, but this actually is a big benefit. You get to play at your pace, and looking at the map doesn't overwhelm you unless you go ahead and reveal the whole map and talk to everyone before actually doing stuff. As such, your journey across Hope County feels much more organic and less like a giant splatter chart of "to-do."

A fan of FC3, played the others and the original, too. Currently downloading the new one. Reviews swayed me.

Sometimes you need a full-on action blast, something Elite doesn't always deliver :D

A big difference between respawning a few minutes back, or losing that fully loaded Cutter, so risk-taking is more relaxed.

Well, after playing it for 6 hours or so I can honestly say its a pretty good game from what I have experienced so far except for the vehicle handling. And the worst here is the helicopter flight model, which after coming from Ghost Recon: Wildlands, is pretty terrible. You can lean forward and still hover for instance. Tilting the aircraft forwards or backwards does not alter your flight at all as far as I can see.

Someone please tell me I have arcade mode on or something. Flying choppers in Wildlands was one of my favourite things to do but here it's just bad.

Yes fair comment but i suppose it was always going to be very basic in a game like this. Not sure its reasonable to expect near flight simulator levels of modelling. Like a lot of things with this game opportunities for real greatness were criminally missed all over.

no but they did pay a small homage to them in one of their stashes (the electrified one - the only one like that that i have found so far, maybe there's others too?)

i really like this game, but i have to launch it 2 or 3 times before it will successfully run - usually the .exe dies during the first splash or the first warning (i.e. the same splash appears about 3 times, the same 'dont have a fit' warning appears twice)

Still haven't played FC 4 or Primal... Lol

I still remember Far Cry 1... Upgraded my PC to play that. Lol

I want a new Crysis game though...
And no, not anything like those crappy sequels that almost don't feel like they're related, but something like the original, but newer. Lol

So it's more actual exploration instead of hunting the signal towers specifically.

Seems to revolve around speaking to locals with the appropriate head icon and looting maps of the area from outposts etc. It's a better system for sure than the mast climbing.

Well, reporting back, I have had a blast over the long weekend. It's a load of fun, some really challenging bits, but mostly fairly manageable outpost liberation, side missions, glorious countryside, and the live mini-map is pretty cool.

Took one of the 3 regions over. Had a blast with OP weapons (like the armed truck), and blowing stuff up is, as always for Far Cry, extremely satisfying.

Most people seem to want you to recover their car/truck/plane/heli... and the AI can be utterly hilariously messed up!

The only story-part that I find slightly annoying is that I've been captured 3 times, but always escape in one piece. If I had caught the guy who has killed over 400 of my people, I'm gonna put a bullet in his head, not try to indoctrinate him and give him many opportunities to escape!! :D

Also reporting back, I can now recommend this game, for sure. It's a lot of fun, with many ways to play.

I've built my guy into a stealth master. It's quite satisfying to take out a base without raising any alarms, picking off guys with a sniper rifle and then going in for the cleanup.

That's not to say that sometimes I don't just grab a helicopter and some rockets and go total destruction mode. That works too :)

I like the NPC companions. They do stupid stuff sometimes, but they are useful and not too annoying (other than saying the same thing over and over -- how hard would it be to limit how often they repeat the same damn phrase? lol).

The dog, Boomer, is pretty much the best dog companion I've had in a game. He's very, very close to D-Dog from Phantom Pain, with similar abilities (D-Dog was my favorite dog companion in any game, up til now -- Boomer is right up there). And he never talks. I only dismiss him in certain situations, when I know he'll just get himself killed (big base assaults in particular -- I let him help me sniff out everyone before the attack, then he gets to rest).

The game suffers a bit from what I call 'console-itis' -- the need for stupidly hard boss sequences that take you completely out of your normal strategies, and force you to run and gun and learn the entire sequence. I find those parts boring and annoying, but they are only a small part of the gameplay.

It's the open-world stuff that's fun. Just stalking through the woods and looking for stuff to do, without even consulting the map, is a great time. Fishing is even fun for a bit. And the landscape is excellent.

The story is ok-ish. Very cliche, but the enemies are reasonably fleshed out, and easy enough to hate. The game does succeed in making me want these bad guys dead :)

Flying is decent, too. I really like helicopters. Flying the planes is hard with just keyboard and mouse, though. I had to plug in a gamepad in order to actually win any plane battles.

Some of the big trucks are hilarious to drive -- just run stuff over!

And there are lots of explosions, very satisfying explosions.

I've just finished killing all of the siblings -- just the Father to go I guess. Not sure what that entails. But it's been quite a ride so far.

Anyway, of the Far Cry's I've played, this has been the most fun, and it appears I'm actually going to complete the main story for once. In the previous games I got bored before then.

I hear mostly good stuff about player experience but I'm not buying it right now. I kinda like FC3 but I don't feel like playing open world and buying a Ubisoft product, yet. Next one I'll look a bit more thorough at is probably the next Anno game.
