Farewell sweet odyssey

I’m a teacher and I took my Odyssey into work today to demo to some students. We decided on the plank simulation and one overly enthusiastic boy got so scared when he thought he was actually falling that he actually “fell” - even though he was only one cm above the ground. Somehow he landed face down and smashed the screen!

Totally gutted but damn it was funny!

Bummer, was that your old HMD? I assume it's not your O+ ?

It’s the o+ ...
The original is in uk.
Fortunately I have an oculus and original vive here in Saudi which I can use for the lecture I am giving on Thursday, but it will be at least two weeks before I can get another o+ shipped from USA :(

The poor kid has a huge black eye and he was genuinely sorry... wished I’d got it on video though!

You're both unlucky - I've had a colleague literally jump off the plank in Richie's and into the wall; both she and the Vive were fine. The TV panel she hit, on the other hand, wasn't - the Office Manager was not amused.

We since refer to it as "the Hayley incident" and stack benches between the play area and the wall with screens to prevent a repeat.

Well, the Vive is a quality, sturdy product. While the Odyssey+ is a cheap plastic junk(with a great screen) ;)

that sounds like a fun class! (sorry for your loss) Maybe it's time to upgrade to a vive pro, since you can write it off for educational purposes :D

A vive pro is a downgrade in comprasition to O+. Everything is downgrade. O+ is best headset at now (not most expensive).
Enclosure may be made form the gold or diamonds, but finally you are looking at the ... screen.

I have a hope OP will fix his helmet or get new O+, and back to The Game ;)

I was under the impression the vive pro had a higher res screen and the o+ artificial sde removal could cause a little blurry/washout. Is the Odyssey really the consensus better of the two?

Resolution of Vive Pro and Oddyssey/Odyssey+ are identical. Probably depends on what kind of games you play. Tracking isn't as good in WMR so Odyssey probably isn't as good for roomscale. I don't have personal experience with either headset so I can't speak for the sde filter.

I'm happy with Wmr tracking, although not able to do a direct comparison to a lighthouse system.

The SDE filter doesn't wash out the image at all, but it does blur it. Comparing a Lenovo to an odyssey+ (I have both) I find it easier to read text in elite using the Lenovo, but would prefer the odyssey+ for other games that don't have so many hard edges where the blurring doesn't matter.

I hope the kids face is okay.. better smash the HMD than a face ;)

He has a shiny black eye!

The topic up for discussion was simulation theory and the demo was supposed to acknowledge that even current tech can trick your brain into believing something you “know” is not real is actually a dangerous experience... I guess it worked! Lol

Odyssey+ have same resolution as vive pro, 1440x1600 per eye, but you have no SDE on O+. There is no any blurr. Image is a sharp as a razor. It is just impossible to make a blur, because anti-sde filter is not influing existing pixels. Folks who are claiming it is blurrying something just need to clear eyes or lenses.
Text is sharp, everything is readable. i had acer vr, and compared it also to oculus and vive.

New odyssey arriving today! One week from destruction to replacement is a big achievement for a place like Saudi!
Things are changing here!

Really liking the three sensor rift setup but the pixel difference is very noticeable and I’m looking forward to going back to the Odyssey +

I respectfully disagree. I have an Odyssey+ (and a Rift, also). The screen door effect is definitely less than that of my Rift, but it's not 100% gone, and the individual pixels are a little blurry. The level of blurriness has to do with how it sits on your face, I think, and because the angle of the goggle part and halo part is not adjustable, it's not possible to get it exactly right for everyone, so while you may not have any blur, others clearly do.

The Odyssey+ is pretty great for the price, but IMHO, you're making a lot sacrifices to get that high resolution image. Namely:

WAY worse tracking, especially of the handy-twiddles
It's not very comfortable (for me)
The headphones, at least in comparison to the Rift's, are garbage, and not even removable.
The software interface between WMR and SteamVR doesn't seem to be as smooth as Oculus'. I get hitching when opening up certain menus in ED on the O+, but not the Rift.

It seems to me that "display a motion compensated picture through a pair of goggles" is a pretty well-understood thing now, but it's not the only component of a good VR system, and currently, it's really only Oculus and HTC that are thinking about this in terms of it being a system.

Edit: Please note, I said I respectfully disagree. The reading I've done about the Odyssey+ in the last few days seems to indicate that the shape of one's head has to do with how good an experience it delivers, and apparently the guy they had test it has a wider, rounder head than me. I don't doubt that your experience with it is good, and that may be because my head is the wrong shape for it.
