Farming and Elite Dangerous

Played a number of MMO's and lots of single player games.
And in comparisson, never felt such a serious boredome concerning farming credits as in Elite Dangerous.

Trading, bounty hunting, mining are monotomeous farming to a level I have never experienced before. Its extremely repeatable for a single player game.

All was fine the first 20 hours, but then when you know all the stuff on your left hand its not so fun anymore.

Surely FD must feel the same?

Sorry to nitpick, but every game is 'repeatable.' Not every game is repetitious, though.

Oh, great. You murmured the trigger phrase. Brace yourself for the incoming hordes telling you that you lack imagination, you're spoiled, you hate the game and have a secret agenda to bring it down (by posting on forums, mhm), etc. Yes, this is a heated discussion we've been having for a few days/months.

Generally there are two groups: those who believe the game is complete, and further content is simply optional, and those who believe the game is a great framework but is still incomplete, and requires more content to be "finished." I keep telling people that when written reviews and new players alike say the same thing repeatedly, there needs to be something to it. Unfortunately, those who are happy and satisfied with the game as it currently is have a habit of telling people like you to shut up, stop whining, stop being ungrateful, etc.

The game will improve, don't worry. FD have much more to add. I'm hoping they mold this game into everything they envision it to be, but it will take time.

In before: "Use your imagination" :D

Uh, it's, like, spelled inb4, okay? I mean, come awn.

I'm sure more activities will be available later on, but it is already quite fun, in my opinion.

I find it a joy to find a new trade route, or to scout distant systems.

I especially like that"space is vast, I'm small" feeling this game conveys (since the 80's version).

Never felt this "farming" feeling you mention, since I focus on the journey itself.

Tbh I love the game but do agree with you, farming credits can be extremely repetitive. I also believe like the above said that only the framework of the game is finished. I would also love to see MANY more ships implemented to the game

I tried farming once, it was horrible. Lot of hard work, very repetitive, long hours, and at the end of the summer all I had were a few lousy ears of corn I could have bought for 30 bucks. Never doing that again!

I'll stick to playing games.

Funny; I could play this game indefinitely with just a Sidewinder...But I know I'm unusual.

I'm sorry but please show me an MMO that doesn't become a farmfest in short order. Rep, crafting mats, pvp points....all grinds in WoW, SWToR, EQ, STo....it's all the same..no point whatsoever in complaining about this one.

At least in ED you can play at your own pace and not worry about keeping up with Guilds, Fleets that tell you that if you don't have a certain level of gear you can pretty much zog off if you want to run raids or high level dungeon stuff.
Been there, done that.

I find the terns "farm" and "grind" quite amusing in the context of a video game. The sole purpose of a video game is to enable fun; to be entertaining. If you're not finding an activity fun, do something else - either in or outside the game. And don't forget that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and experiencing a different result. Try not to focus on earning credits, and instead do something you might enjoy.

Perhaps try:
- Smuggling stolen goods into bigger stations secured by authority vessels
- Piracy (player or NPC) using the hatch breakers
- Chasing down and interdicting high value bounties in supercruise
- Overthrowing a system, or supporting others that are trying to
- Engaging in faction warfare in low and high intensity combat zones
- Practicing stealthy assassination tactics
- Taking down Elite Anacondas
- Seeking out rare goods - just for the thrill of the chase
- Seeking out precious metals in pristine systems, and then mining then
- Combat in resource extraction sites (mind the asteroids)
- Engaging in the Galnet stories - go to the places listed for a lot of player interaction

Just some suggestions...

This.

People will lead you to believe that you're either playing the game wrong, or ignoring all the content. This is false. The content that's currently available is shallow at best. The foundations for a great game are all there, but the game's currently very empty.

AKA an excuse for landing fast. Everyone's done it, regardless of whether they're smuggling goods or not.
- Piracy (player or NPC) using the hatch breakers
Being a pirate is no different than any other combat profession except that you get shot at more often.
- Chasing down and interdicting high value bounties in supercruise
The same as any other combat profession except you pick who you fight.
- Overthrowing a system, or supporting others that are trying to
Basically doing missions while watching a % go up. Overthrowing a system won't actually impact you in any meaningful way.
- Engaging in faction warfare in low and high intensity combat zones
This is just plain old combat and can be performed anywhere in the universe.
- Practicing stealthy assassination tactics
Haven't tried this, but it sounds like purposefully gimping yourself for the novelty value of being an 'assassin'
- Taking down Elite Anacondas
Again, more combat. The fun decreases exponentially after the first Anaconda. You may attempt it in a crummy ship if you have a strong desire to engage in a 20 minute fight.
- Seeking out rare goods - just for the thrill of the chase
I think this one was a joke.... Dock with stations & hope to see a yellow commodity. Use data-mined commodity list to narrow search down.
- Seeking out precious metals in pristine systems, and then mining then
Stare down celestial objects to scan them, then shoot rocks, pickup rocks, sell rocks, and repeat. Mining is the single most boring thing in the game.
- Combat in resource extraction sites (mind the asteroids)
Yet more combat that can be performed anywhere. Admittedly, extraction site combat is the best combat in the game.
- Engaging in the Galnet stories - go to the places listed for a lot of player interaction
Go to popular locations in the galaxy and get interdicted and attacked for the 200cr bounty on your head. Game currently has very limited player interaction, so getting shot at or shooting at someone pretty much covers all of it.

Just some suggestions...

This is a perfect example. Things we've all done, or can easily do, all guised as unique activities.

There's indeed alot of emptiness right now, I call it "more of the same" Syndrom - the only thing the Game still has in unlimited supply.
The amount of things that can be done meaningful in the game... I can count on two hands, if I leave all the smaller variations of them aside.
But I'm confident that'll change over time.

Exactly this! I can't think of a better way to describe it other than "more of the same syndrome".

In most other games there is much more to do and the missions actually get you involved or there is more of a feel for a purpose. But in ED it is all exactly the same no matter which system you are in no matter how far out you will still see the same exact wording in the missions. no mission in ed has a story line or a goal oriented feature. It is just "get this and bring it here" or "take this here". There needs to be a few at the lease mini story lines in the missions with branches that change the outcome. Currently the branches are "hey your working with a bad guy work with us and deliver it here instead" that's it nothing else. That is not a branch mission. As for the other careers in game they are pretty much the same. Very Very repetitive in the fact that down to the wording again no matter were you go or what you do everything looks the same accept the planets. So yes the game can get very boring quickly. So yeah you have to use ALOT of IMAGINATION.

Actually those that like the game as it is are not saying its finished etc, they just get into debates about design philosophy. There are lots of ways to add content and related game mechanics. Those that like the game at the moment for the most part want more content etc, but dont want certain design ideals sacrificed to provide it, I dont want to play dragon age inquisition in space.

I think the majority of the regular posters can be separated into three groups.

1) Loves the game, loves Frontier, and will vehemently attack anyone that has anything negative to say whatsoever (regardless of how constructive or valid). In the common vernacular... fanboys.
2) Likes the game, wants it to be great, are realistic about its shortcomings but confident and hopeful that FD will continue to develop it and it will grow into its potential. A lot of these folks suffer from the social ineptitude and lack of tact common to the gamer population, but overall I believe they mean well and want the game to improve.
3) Wanted Call of Duty: Space Ops, are really mad, and really vocal about it.

I think types 1 and 2 will probably be here for the long haul, and type 3 will probably fade away over the coming weeks.

Funny, I seem to be doing just the same myself. In fact I am very reluctant to buy the next ship. The nicely upgraded Sidey fights well if I want to and can flee quite handily when it must.

So why am I having so much fun with it? According to you I should bored brainless, but I am not.

In the course of a few hours play this evening I took on a high paying mission. Then two others came up which I could fit in (a bit time sensitive they were) so I took them. Then I get held up by a star blocking the jump route, plus a couple of interdictions (one nice bounty and one lucky escape) and I managed to fullfil all three. Tense? Yes. Exciting? Yes. Challenging? Most definitely. And very profitable :)

I suppose I must be a fanman (at my age I can't possibly be a fanboy!).

But I have to think, if it's this good now then the future of E : D will be brilliant.

Here's my opinion on this beaten-to-death subject:

I love ED as it is, but there is almost no merit to saying "use your imagination" in a lack of content argument. When you look at what the game offers, it is nearly 95% "Go to point A, collect thing, go to point B, collect reward and then upgrade your ship" and 5% "Fight this guy" for the entire game. I don't care how much imagination you have, there is no way you can do the same missions OVER AND OVER and not say that the game gets boring. The only reason I haven't quit is because I haven't gotten my Cobra yet (fighting for bounties with an Eagle is a long and arduous process; I'm also not going to mine/haul to get money quicker because that's a boredom I don't want to experience." Basically, as soon as get what I want (in this case, the Cobra), I'm done; there is nothing left for me to do as there is no variety in any mission or career path. I know it may seem like I hate the game, but I don't; I've sunk about 60 hours into the game and I have a lot of high hopes for the game. ED would really benefit from some mission/activity variety and would likely go a long way in shutting up some of the more vocal forum goers/players. As it stands:

1) Trading = Literally from point A - point B.
2) Hauling missions = Take this good from here to there.
3) Exploring = From point A - to point Z and every other letter in every other language in existence.
4) Combat= Kill that dude.
5) Smuggling = Last I heard, smuggling was nerfed into oblivion, but again, take your good from A to B.

To close out my opinion on the ED content debate, I think that the framework is entirely there, but it really needs to be expanded and I do not think it should have been "released" for another year or so if not longer.

On a second note, I really wish that the users that attack anyone that posts a criticism of the game would use their brains for more than 5 seconds and realize that no game, including ED, is perfect and therefore open to improvements. The people you're seeing address these issues do not outright hate ED, they just want to have fun like the rest of you. Just because you are having fun does not mean that they are, and that's just fine for them to voice that opinion. However, some of the users (Dabba referring to them as wanting CoD: Space Ops is very accurate) are whining about every little mechanic (having to "nanny" the controls is my favorite complaint so far) and they really do need to just go play whatever flavor of the month is out that caters to them. Anyway, I'm done with my long coming rant; let the negative rep influx begin.
