Farming manufacture mats using limpets

Everyone likes a bit of engineering, right? Well perhaps not - it can be a bit of a grind.

So, let's say I'm going to go to an Anarchy system, lurk around the NAV, perhaps with a KWS and reduce target ships into component parts suitable for engineering.

It would all be much easier with collector limpets, but is there a way to say "pick up the mats, don't bother with the cannisters"?

I can't be bothered looking for a black market and owning cargo will make me a target and I want to control the speed of the fighting.

Select canister.
Select ignore.
Yes, it's not ideal...

Am I correct in my assumption that this will ignore that canister, or ones with similar contents and not canisters in general? If so, then yes, it's not ideal - but thanks anyway. :)

Targeting one material then launching a limpet retrieves it, but then that limpet immediately dies. I wasted a few limpets figuring that one out. Maybe pick up everything then jettison the cargo when done.

It will ignore the particular type of canisters, it depends on the content.
If you encounter other canisters, the limpets will pick them up. So it takes a while until all relevant stuff is ignored.

In the meantime, be careful once you have cargo space available, you're fast to pick up illegal cargo.

Thanks, I'm not the best at explaining things.
Yeh, it takes a while to get your ignore list up to speed.
I suspect there will be improvements in future, hopefully when they look at mining.

Thanks for confirming how it works.

Follow up question:

I have given up farming materials from criminal scum and instead decided that I am starting a new career as a criminal scrum. I want to engage in piracy and collect illegal salvage which I can sell on the black market.

Do I need to "unignore" all the canister types? If so, how would i?

Same way you ignored them. THey will show in the contacts screen, and you have the option to unignore them.

No, its all done on a piecemeal basis...one at a time which as others have pointed out, isnt ideal...but thats what we have anyway ^

I personally ignore canisters below 5k. I feel like they are bonuses. I let the limpets do their thing. In your case, it might even be quicker to let them pick up the cargo and during their next pick-up, you "jettison (ignore)" the cargo you don't want.

Okay, thanks all. That about covers it :)

One last wee thing...dont target what ye want scooped up, as the limpet will expire after that one piece of loot. Just be within range and dont target anything when ye send the lemming limpets off to do their thing ^

Limpets tend to collect materials first, I have found, best way is to let them get on with it and abandon cargo, when you have finished, or targetting the materials you want collected

If you target them, the limpet gets destroyed.

Ideally, you are just destroying the next ship while your limpets are collecting the mats, hence you would need to keep an eye on your cargo hold and be wary of other ships scanning you while engaged in combat. Hence, I don't find the "abandon cargo" (it also gets rescooped) idea practical.

Damn limpets are the bane of my life, in this day and age of beam lasers, plasma accelerators and warp travel, you would have though one of the daft engineers would have a blue print for a bloody tractor beam.

I have to laugh when im in a busy Res site, heres me sitting there just chilling letting the limpets do their job and the battle of wolf 359 is going on around me:)

I guess I could just store the cargo racks at a nearby outfitter, that might be the easiest solution of all.

Edit: Except I need to carry limpets. *head desk*
