FAS or FDL going forward?

I have both ships. I love both ships. I have upgraded C3 multicannons on my FAS, one has corrosive.

I'm just looking to focus on one combat ship to upgrade for now, then move on to others after. I want to start with one of these 2. Any opinions on which I should go with?

I love the maneuverability of the FAS. It's hard to fly the FDL after the FAS. It definitely feels far less "tossable".

I love the C4 multicannon on the FDL. I also love the ridiculous shielding it has.

I can also hold my own against the new AI in either ship.

So, any input? I'll probably choose the FAS because I've already started modding it. Just wondering what others think. Anyone have one or both upgraded?

At this point I think the better one will be whichever has the best heat capacity for using all those good hardpoints.

I haven't had a chance to fly the FAS since 2.1 yet - but I'm very disappointed in the heat nerf of the FDL. Sure it needed some, but now you can't even fire off 2 rails guns at once without heat damage (or needing to fire a heat sink). Gone are my stealth FDL days...... [cry] Now I need to earn back prismatic shields to go to a shielded build.

I hadn't heard but was the FAS heat nerfed just as bad?

Perhaps this anecdote might help.. The other day I was flying my old PVP, all hull, FAS back from a distant system to my home system. This FAS has full armor with mill spec and all hull reinforcements and was built for silent running with frag cannons. I was interdicted by an Elite Python and was just about to kill him (he was on 15% hull and I was on about 96%) when I remembered this was my second account and I'd kind of promised myself that my combat rank would be all from PVP. So, I left the Python on 13% hull and turned and started to high wake out. Having hardly hit me throughout the entire fight, the Python turned round and killed my FSD as it was charging somehow taking it down to 32% in what appeared to be one hit (missiles?). Anyway, then I was forced to kill the Python (which annoyed me) but it made me wonder about the wisdom of using anything that relies on hull with the new NPCs.. I've had no trouble with them in shield tanking builds but the FAS can't really do that... They've got very good at killing modules.. Anyway, food for thought.

Without upgrades, my FDL is still king of the hill for me. Lol
So I'd choose that. If I were to even bother. (Hate crafting)

But as for which one you should upgrade first? Personal choice. Lol

*Is of No help*

If the decision is too hard. Flip a coin.
Which ever you pray it lands on while in the air, is the one you want. Regardless of which way it lands. Handy tip.

@nerwan

Could I bother you for 4 bits of info? :

1) was the python a mission npc, or a randomly spawned pirate?
2) your combat rank.
3) your ship value.
4) your total assets.

Feel free to refuse if any ofthat is too personal. Just trying to track down something.

Why do you need to ditch one? I have both and take them both out for a Combat spin. Both are great, both have Strengths, both have weaknesses. I don't think one is better than the other at everything! Mod em both, keep both, enjoy both!

Neither are modded yet, as all that engineer stuff i have not got round to as i am enjoying the missions, but i will mod both and fly both as the mood takes me!

Both ship have their advantages and disadvantages, it is a matter of what you like more IMO.
I can tell that i chose FAS, because it is much better at being at least slightly multipurpose then FDL. You can have good jump range in FAS, and internals are bigger, making it possible to add things like SRV or small cargo rack without compromising combat capability too much. More "comfortable" ship to fly overall.

I'm not ditching anything. Just deciding which one to focus my upgrades on first.

The FAS was never great at heat management. I'm not really having any issues with 2 fixed C2 beams and my 2 C3 multicannons. I get the warning now and then, but I haven't taken any damage.

The thing that drives nuts about the FDL is how much it slows down in a turn, even stopping. That, and it is sluggish in super cruise. Love the ship, but these are my major gripes.

I used to hate the top hardpoint on the FAS. Hated it so much that it is why I didn't use it a lot. The gimballed multicannons in the C3 slots have all but eliminated that issue for me. They work great.

I'll probably choose the FAS. It's just such a beast of a combat ship, and like someone else mentioned, it has a bit more utility than the FAS, for other things. It's hard to deal with the pitch rates of other ships once you're used to it. I'll probably do a DBS and Vulture afterwards.

That being said, the AspX remains my workhorse. I haven't even flown my Cutter yet in 2.1

How can you increase your combat rank from PVP? I tried few months in a row, i killed strictly only commanders, and nothing, same percent in dangerous rank no rank increase. Then i killed some innocent npc's, and bam, i raised my combat rank with a few percents.

OK, so delete word 'Ditch' from my post and insert 'Focus'.

Everything else in my post is still relevant. Do em both, enjoy both of them!

It does go up (I think), my "Harmless" rating has gone up to almost "Mostly Harmless" from killing 3 commanders.. However, it's going to be very very slow since I'm not prepared to just start interdicting sideys in order to do it. I don't have a problem with it being ultra low anyway. I plan to hang out with my Harmless rating in a T9 and see who pulls me over :)

I've killed only 2 NPCs so far, this Python and an Anaconda right at the beginning to give me enough to get my sidey up to first Robigo standard...

I just want to focus so I can have a fully upgraded combat ship before working on others. I know Kornelius Briedis had an FAS in Beta that was ridiculous. The pitch rate was just silly with grade 5 drives.

Sooo, in short i should kill more commanders eh? I knew it, but it's a little disappointing when you kill an elite human Corvette and your rank stay at the same level. Maybe it's harder on higher levels?

Well you start having to kill huge numbers once you're dangerous and above just to get 1%. You also have to kill people ranked higher than you... So elite commanders with Robigo Corvettes and skills to go with should be the juiciest targets :) Honestly I don't think I'd do this if I had a high combat rating already, you won't be able to kill enough to see the rating change..

To go forward apply thrust. To go more apply more thrust. I suggest you look at thrusters. I hear they also work for going curves and backwards.

I'll be in my bunk - dreaming about the fastest Viper in the galaxy, then.

FAS with C3 beam top and all multicannons bottom is working well for me. Tried C2 beams and C3 multicannons, but too much heat, power draw, and spinup delay.

Would like to try FDL and huge weapons, but yikes on that jump range. 15ly on the FAS is bad enough when I need to move it.

so harmless combat rank, in a FAS (a rated I assume), and you attracted an elite pirate in a python "How did you get this far with such a juicy cargo"-type encounter?

If so thats, unsurprising, but also horribly broken.

Yes, I must admit I was surprised to be attacked by an Elite Python.. I think it was the type that comes after you for having a bounty. I have a bounty because of non-payment of fines I think which I got for abandoning missions in a different system. I have a Harmless combat rank on that account but a Broker level trade rank from spamming Robigo a fair bit.. But yes, I did wonder how the real newbies are getting on with that kind of thing..

Ranking against Commanders works the same way against NPC's. It's not necessarily the number of kills but the quality. Defeating a Deadly or Elite Commander will improve your rank more than defeating an Expert. With a large enough gap, with you outranking your opponent, you will gain no advancement at all.
