Newcomer / Intro Fastest way to increase rank with felicity farseer?

I just spent around 3 hours collecting cartographic data using the road to riches route planner, in order to sell it at the farseer station and level my rank up to max with her. I am relatively new to the game and have just started working on unlocking engineers and I understand that FSD is the first thing you want to do. As I was landing at the station a player in a fully engineered ship killed me in literally 2 seconds and I lost 3 hours worth of data. Is there any quicker way of ranking up? Should I just play in solo from now on? Also, it says I have grade 3 access but it says I still need higher reputation to builod the grade 2 FSD (I have already built grade 1). What grade access do I need to build the grade 2 FSD?

Generally worth going to Engineers (especially Deciat) in Solo to be on the safe side but I’d say don’t abandon Open altogether just yet!

If you’ve engineered a Grade 1 FSD then you should simply be able to carry on and increase that same FSD to Grade 2 - provided you have the required materials. Obviously it has to be the same module (each module you engineer has to be begun at G1) and the same blueprint. So, assuming you’re doing “Increased Range” you can’t just jump to the “Shielded” blueprint and go straight in at G2. Not that you’d want to, Increased Range is definitely the way to go!

Essentially, just engineering a single module through from G1 to G5 on a particular blueprint will unlock full access whilst getting you a useful upgrade in the process so, whilst it’s irritating to have lost that Carto data, you’d be spending the materials to do the upgrades anyway so I wouldn’t worry too much.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the reply. So I have built the grade 1 increased range and want to build the grade 2 increased
range. As you can see in the screenshot I have the materials required and I have grade 3 access but it still wont let me?

you do not have the materials for grade 2.
it cost 1 grid resistor per roll. you have none.
you will need 3 or 4 depending on current "prices".

edit: props for not activating windows though. :)

I have updated the screenshot, the old one was a mistake and had a different upgrade selected.

Also thanks lol

new pic shows that you have not completed grade 1
there will be a check mark next to a completed grade.
so do you have to do each grade multiple times? I definitely built it once and when i llok at my modules on the right hand panel it has the icon next to the fsd and says its modified

yes to multiple times.
as a general rule: 1-3 materials to get grade one completely done.
2-4 for grade 2
3-5 for grade 3
6-8 for grade 4
9-11 for grade 5

the number shown for materials needed is just for ONE roll.
it can take as many as 11 rolls to get grade 5 alone done.
that gets expensive (in mats) QUICK.

I hope that makes sense. It is somewhat convoluted.
As I said though, when you complete a grade, a check mark will appear beside it and you will have access to the next grade.

ah i see, i had no clue it worked like that. Thanks.

When you start upgrading something you'll see both a bar on the left hand side under the level of upgrade you're applying, as well as the blue circles filling in at the same rate. From that screenshot you can see from the bar on the left you're just barely over 50% done on the grade 1 mod. You need to be at least 2/3 of the way to the next level to be able to engineer the next tier. The higher your engineer level, the fewer attempts you need to make to increase the progress of that bar, though naturally, higher grades require more rolls anyway.

As for the quickest way to level up, basically, just build stuff. Sell cartographic data if you have it sure, but don't bother relying on it as an effective means of raising access, far quicker to just spend resources and get some mods engineered. Engineer something to level 5 and your access with that engineer should also be maxed out by the time you're done too. You could keep re-doing lower grade mods, but you'll also notice that as your engineer level increases, the exp you gain from engineering lower grade mods counts for less as well, so it ends up being more resource effective to just get something engineered to grade 5 straight off the bat.

Thanks, much more helpful info than i found anywhere else on the internet

As an aside, don't forget that remote engineering won't upgrade your access with the engineer - you need to be at their base for that. Of course, once you're at max with them, it doens't matter.

Good lucj and welcome to ED @@@07
