Favorite Game of All Time by David Braben

Like many others, I've been eagerly awaiting both the 1.5 and 2.0 patches for Elite Dangerous. ED has been making strides to being on par with my favorite game of all time. The first game where you had a whole galaxy to explore, both in space and on the surface. The progress might be a bit slow for some, but the undertaking is pretty massive when you think about it. I really can't wait for atmospheric planets and gas giants with full working clouds. Horizons is a big step in that direction and the framework for things to follow. I find the prospect rather exciting.

Anyway I ran across this which demonstrates just how much there was to Frontier Elite 2 and why it's still my favorite game of all time. As yet, no game has come remotely close to matching the scope and awe of FE2. I'm hoping Elite Dangerous will take over at some point fairly soon. :)

The re-make of the intro is pretty cool, but for real nostalgia here's the original:

OP. That's not how the game looked. That is way upgraded graphics. But still one of the best games ever when released.

You know, wouldn't it be amazing if the into music made it's way into Horizons somehow, maybe during the transition down to a planet. I'm pretty sure I must have watched that into all the way through every time I played as a kid!

They could always add it to the docking computer. Speaking of which... they need to add in a music player function so you can put in a library of music and play it in the game.

I don't recall that. I used a Boa and flew out to Beta Lyrae and then just kept going.

To be fair this was in FFE, so there may not have been the same limits in FE2, and my goal was to get to the 'object' known as Sag A* but the hyperspace drives would eventually fail despite repairing them with maintenance units. Mind you, Beta Lyrae isn't that far away at around 1kLY from Sol, so you might not have encountered the problems I had.

During Kaushpoos I went ahead and got a docking computer for my Anaconda. First time I've used one since Elite (which I didn't use long). Gave my hand a rest to recover from all those combat CGs. I noticed it had a bit of variety in music and was kind of surprised it didn't include anything but Blue Danube from the previous games.

Just sayin', the quality of music in the Amiga version was best!

If you like the introduction music, have a listen to the "Escape Velocity" podcasts.. The reproduction of the Elite intro is fantastic and I would love that to be part of the actual game... Wicked guitars thrashing then relaxed wind instruments following... Give it a listen.
You can download them through a link on the Lave Radio site BTW
