General / Off-Topic Favorite Novel?

What is your favorite novel of any genre? I have a large love for Little Women, David Copperfield, A Tale Of Two Cities, and, most importantly, The Five People You Meet In Heaven.

i used to be such a cliche of a teenager and walk around with a copy of the catcher in the rye in my pocket! I love fear and loathing in las vegas as well

Also in cold blood by truman capote is very good

Most of Hunter S Thompson is worth a read, I used to have an excellent collection of his articles for Rolling Stone. I made the mistake of lending it to someone though :-(

Favourite novel is hard one, maybe Excession by Ian M Banks, although again I like most of his work.

For my sins one of my favourite novels/serials are the Stainless Steel Rat books by Harry Harrison, I also love the Discworld books. both have a quirky sense of humour. Grown up with both them.

I still haven't read a Ian M Banks novel yet despite being recommended him so many times, I haven't read a book for a while yet either tho :(

cool, i will have to check that out, apparently he is pretty good writing as Ian Banks as well, my friend highly recommended the wasp factory to me.

I just find myself not wanting to read after a long days work these days. its a shame because it makes you cleverer, innit :)

I used the love the Stainless Steel Rat books when I was younger, and the Discworld books are one of the few I always buy as soon as they are available.

The Wasp Factory is an excellent book, if a little disturbing. The sci-fi novels as Ian M Banks are pretty much all worth checking out, as I mentioned earlier Excession is my favourite, but Player of Games and Use of Weapons are also very good.

Right. Do you think its just best to start from the beginning of the Culture series though? I mean if they are all really good, then maybe its worth starting with the first otherwise I might not understand all about the history etc

Again with the Discworld books I'm pretty quick off the mark when a new one is out. :D

I read them as a youngster but picked them up again recently - Unfortunately the adventures of Mr Slippery Jim Digriz and the lovely Angelina didn't stand up to time as well as I'd hoped.

Still an amusing read.

That's a shame, I can see what you mean I'll probably start from the beginning and go through them in cronological order instead of published dates.

Tried to get my 9yr old to read the 1st one a couple of weeks ago but he struggled a bit, will have to wait a couple of years.

Not a huge fan of Banks, though his Culture-books have some fantastic characters in the ships and their minds.

Anyway, in terms of sci-fi I think it is either Stephen R. Donaldsson's The Gap or Peter F. Hamilton's The Reality Dysfunction that has to be my favourite books.

But overall it has to be The Animal Farm that is the best novel.

Just finished 1984, I was suprised by how many lines in the book are now common sayings... a disturbing comment on the direction of our society?...

V v good book though, must pick up Animal Farm at some point!

As for favourite Sci-Fi book....hmmmm.... probably Star Maker by Olaf Stapleton (which I only picked up because Arthur C. Clarke said it was the book that got HIM into Sci-Fi!)

Do yourself a favour and hunt down the Millenium SF Masterworks reprint :)

I loved Peter F Hamilton's "The Night's Dawn Trilogy":
The Reality Dysfunction
The Neutronium Alchemist
The Naked God
