Favourite DLC Speculation Moments

It's been a long ride! What are your favourite moments from these last few years.

I think for me it is still the Oceania stream, specifically when we saw those "devil horns" appear on the drink. Everyone knew what it meant, the Tassie had been at the top of the META-Wishlist for over a year at that point. It was also my number one most wanted animal at the time, and I was so happy!

The Barnyard reveal itself was super fun. I knew people would lose their minds (one way or the other) for Domestic Species being added en masse, so hearing it early and being able to watch the chaos unfold was such an exciting time.

I will say I miss the DLC Teases and Reveals from the Eltanin Era (yes that's what I'm dubbing it, they're slay and deserve that.) Them and Lyd did such a great job building up hype in the community, and from my understanding, they weren't obligated to do anything like that. They were doing it because they wanted to have fun with it. As opposed to the Frontier Unlocked professionalism, though I appreciate a transparent, monthly catch-up, I miss the impromptu and childish nature of those reveal and teaser streams.

As far as the community:

The absolute frothing frenzy of madness that took place in the lead up to the North American Animal Pack reveal - it was like a whole month before this this place was a madhouse of doomspeaking. Nearly 4 years ago we had people convinced the game was ending, too bad North America and Europe!

The near total community support of the Capybara being in the "next" pack right after Europe was revealed, because otherwise the forum was going to break in half if the game ended without the world's largest rodent in it.

The controversies of the Hot Take (Red River) Hog being unnecessary, the "Wolverines don't belong in the Temperate/Tundra/Taiga/theyjustdon'tbelong" discussions, the Nightmare/Dreams scenario threads, the oddball discussion threads...

The engaging and interest that came along with the community here on the forums. Great discussion and ideas that were almost always done in a welcoming way. The community has been great, like no other forum community I've been on, which were much more opinionated to the point it took away some enjoyment and the reason I was on those forums to begin with. That was never the case here - though my activity decreased a bit, there's non-game/non-forum related reasons for that....I never felt like the forum was driving me away.

Biggest shoutout to the Meta-Thread creators, including most notably @random goat - I firmly believe the roster would not have looked like or met so many (mammalian) needs of the community that it did if not for these threads.

What I won't miss are the "We have too many bears/dogs/monkeys/mustelids/rodents, we need more cats/antelopes" discussion. Sorry ya'll, those two groups had MORE than enough representation though I'm thrilled we ended up with 3 Asian Antelopes, which feels just about right. The Klipspringer was a very late-added want for me, but otherwise I was honestly disappointed when I saw more African Antelopes added in (ya'll can boo at me if you want, I said what I said).

As far as the developers:

The livestreams where they had the hints were almost always such fun, the twilight one being the exception because most were convinced we were getting the Tassie and Maned Wolf when we got the skunk and Red Fox (but we got the Tassie and Maned Wolf anyways later). I think my favorites were the drawings one that took place before Wetlands, and of course the European storyline - though honestly Eurasia's nature trek was also really great.

The amazing turnaround to make the binturwrong the binturright.

The energy and enthusiasm that the developers had for this game, was so inspiring. This may have been a job to them but it never felt like it was "just" a job - it always came across they truly enjoyed what they did.

Up to a point in time the release trailers were always so fun to watch as well. When we could see all of the animals, in their interactions - if I had to pick one favorite it would definitely be the Wetlands release trailer, and I'm not sure what a second would be because that just stands out so much to me.

On my own personal reaction to developers and reveals - I think if I had to take ONE moment that was the highest point for me in the game's lifespan, it was that meerkat poking its head out of the hole it dug on the Africa reveal teaser trailer. Oh, my. gosh. . I was sooooo happy because that was the biggest single species glaring omission from the base game IMO and I was over the moon they were actually going to make them in (to which I credit forum input since they were heavily discussed).

I guess a sadder note but bittersweet, during the year of covid when the Australia pack came out. I was still taking care of my pet at the time and knew the end was coming (he had been sick for three years at that point). A bit of light when out of my life when he passed in that November, and enjoyment on things got muted for a long while (and to be honest still are at times). I was glad to be able to have that enjoyment and celebrate the much needed Aussie animals being added to the game.

For me it'd have to be the Oceania Pack livestream and announcement too. I remember the leadup to it - speculation of an Islands Pack had waned after holy quartet of Tassie devil, fossa, tree kangaroo and kiwi was broken by the Tropical Pack, and the devil, which had been my most wanted animal since the game launched, had sat atop the metawishlist for over a year. In fact, every other animal that was in the top 7 of the metawishlist when the devil first rose to the top had been added to the game already, making the fact that Frontier was skirting around adding it especially frustrating to me (especially with the "erm, the devil is so niche, is it really essential??" conversation that was popping up in the DLC speculation chat every other week by then). Little did I know the wait would be worth it.

At that point I think everyone had a feeling that the devil was going to be in the next DLC, but I, like most people, assumed we were just going to be getting something like a Temperate Pack, with the devil and maybe the kiwi being the only Oceanian animals added. I had long since buried my hope of us getting any substantial amount of Oceanian species in the same pack, but even with just the devil I'd have been thrilled. Then the stream came around, the mocktails were revealed, and the community rapidly pieced together the next pack's habitat roster. I remember the realisation hitting me - oh my god, they're doing it, they're actually doing it, we were getting an Oceania revisit. And with a roster consisting of my most wanted animal, my most wanted bird, New Zealand's essential icon and a fantastic small filler animal for Australia, it felt like a dream selection to me, even without the tree kangaroo.

The rest of the release cycle was a fantastic ride of hype. The announcement trailer had me punching the air and cheering, I was one of the few people who was still super happy with the flying-fox (I love bats and having a realistic option for Australian zoo builds is awesome), and I cherished every screenshot and clip they released of the pack as we approached release. Unfortunately release day gave me mixed feelings as the lack of accurate sounds for the Tasmanian devil really got to me after waiting so long for them, but within a day I managed to pull myself back around, and everything else about the devils is so well done that they're still my favourite animal in the entire game.

All of this is just an overly long and dramatic way of saying that I just really, really like the Oceania Pack lol, and continue to appreciate it more and more as time goes on. It's absolutely where the game peaked for me, and even though there's still a lot missing from this corner of the world, I'm so glad it happened.

Man my highlight was the Aquatic/ Sun Bear leak. That was when so many people had this reinforced hype for the game that they were finally adding aquatics (we all know how that turned out) but I just remember optimism was at an all time high. Also when we got SEA announced as an animal pack. We all had our doubts the game roster would be good with only 5 animals dropping at a time and then boom they announce a pack with 8! Peak.

(Shoutout to @Leaf Productions for leaking the Africa pack 😂 but we don’t talk about that…)

Aquatic and Africa leaks were pretty fun, I was so excited by those. The speculations on why is there a sun bear on the list with the aquatic animals. Fun times. I also really like those teaser streams, Oceania was my favourite, with the drink mixing.

Oh but what I miss the most is that the community managers actually communicated with us. It was right at the start, with Bo and Chante. The good old times when they were actually commenting in threads regarding bugs, future updates, recent hot topics on the forums and even community creations. I miss that.

No idea what this is, can you elaborate? Sounds funny
I remember that one of the CMs accidentally called an as-yet unrevealed animal of the twilight Pack by its name ("skunk") during the pre-announcement livestream, which pretty much put all hopes of it being the tassie to rest. Something about "hogs" rings a bell, but I can't seem to quite place it (was this about the red river hog in the tropical pack?)

I am a bit late to the party lol. My favourite DLC speculation moment... As you may know, I am here since, IDK lol, not that long. But I played this game also since 2019, just joined the forum in November 2023. But I read your speculation at least since tropical. However, I always liked the special livestream, the CMs put so much effort in them. I always found it funny, how much dislike Arid got here. Or how we all thought, petting Zoo as a theme is a good choice, but not with that breeds and not as a last pack. Then came the Zookeepers Pack, and we called it the end, but there was more coming. Now after the Asia Pack with no justification, it really seems to be end. After 10 Packs or so where we thought, this one has to be the last one. Yeah, was a fun time always. And the day after the special livestream, where we had time to speculate what's coming. Ugh, I miss this times. I cant decide what my favourite moment was indeed, a very funny one was, how the speculation from a highlands animal Pack switched to the Zookeepers Pack or in the Eurasia Pack, when in the stream an animal was described that could be Takin or Wisent, and we all hoped for the takin. In the end it was both. And the "Why Saiga, this has to be the Blackbuck"- now we have the blackbuck too and now it's funny somehow.
Whatever, I don't want to write an whole essay (lol), but I really hope we can continue this speculation in maybe Planet Zoo 2, as it was always a fun ride and sometimes a rollercoaster

Ohh yeah now I remember!
Someone in the stream said "so, what were you saying before you were interrupted by the hogs?" and immediately tried to cover up their mistake
