[FD] Plea to let the community make skins.

Dear FD,

I like your ship skins, I've bought a few so, I'm not knocking your artists but, please open skins to the community so we can make them (not usable in game) to be voted on and released in the store! After approval by FD of course! [EDIT]

There's a huge pool of talent in this community that would be a shame not to take advantage of. I'll admit I know nothing of the difficulty involved or the legal red tape but, IMO, this would be a huge boon for both FD and us players.

Pretty please? If it's possible, that would be great!

I still think factional skins shouldn't be out for sale, but unlockable through mission/reputation mechanics.

As long as any skins useable in game have to be approved by FD, I don't really see a downside. +1 and a yes from me.

But if sold in the shop they would have to be perfect.

I too second this. As an old flightsimmer used to customising our vehicles I can say in all my years online I've honestly never seen an offensive skin job. I've seen some terribad ones but nothing offensive. We also have the report button if really needed.

Keep selling your skins but let us make our own.

Even the skins designed by FD sometimes had to be tweaked later
And i absolutely have no doubt that the community has creative and technically experienced talents that could do some amazing things.

I like to be different - no!

I don't care either way to be honest (didn't vote) - I just want more skins for all ships.
Plus lets just forget fancy patterns as well; what happened to buying a white transit, or a red escort, or a black audi.
Lets just have some basic colour options that you can knock up in minutes.

It's SO embarrassing when you arrive at the party in your shiny white apollo asp - only to find out that everyone is wearing the same outfit!

So I don't care how they do it, lets just have masses more choice please!
A community competition will only slow things down

Only if either:

A. FD approve them, and require a sufficiently high standard (which they probably won't, given the low standard of FD skins in the store); or
B. I can choose to block them from displaying in my game

Given recent events, I'd say FD is always listening and indeed do make changes based on our feedback. This doesn't mean the skins idea will go through but, I have no doubt it's already been read by FD (and has in the past) and been considered. Whether or not FD will respond to this single thread is irrelevant, IMO, because they already have seen it and have considered it, which was the agenda.

Before this though... I think the "stock" paint job should be a selectable item when buying your ship. White, black,yellow, red, etc. Give us your basic spectrum. Would be great.

I just worry about performance issues or overall complications with it.

I am all for approved skins but I think it might be kinda hard to get working and working without issues..or maybe it's simple who knows. (But so far the stutter can't even be fixed so I don't want anything else that can cause stutter/loading issues)

But I guess Frontier would get hundreds if not thousands of skins, its going to be a full time job for one person to check all these and approve some?

Not if posted in a forum thread, voted on and then approved by FD. Say maybe top 10?

I'd like this, maybe even go further - freely downloadable templates for skins and decals, any you make, you pay FD a minimal fee to upload or pay a little more if you want it to be exclusive to you. Skin/decal gets reviewed by FD - anything offensive you don't get your money back - but if approved they make it immediately available to you and if you didnt pay the extra for it to be exclusive it goes on the store.
