Start making official die cast models for £15/£20 each and I believe they may well make more money than the game has...

Sins of a Solar Empire did a great job but only released the one ship in a very limited number which was kind of a buzzkill.

I would happily buy proper sized models of some of the ships in the game. Depending on their scale they could also work with certain tabletop game rule sets as well. A game of ED using the X-wing miniatures game rules could be pretty neat for example.

Although I would love to get them even just for the sake of having them and perhaps painting them.

Maybe produce a set and make a miniatures wargame out of it? Games Workshop did a great dogfighting game "Aeronautica Imperialis" which could be adapted - they never support their niche games and it died out quickly but the rule system is sound and it'd suit the fighter duels of Elite.
