Fdev have good sound design, BUT...

We can all agree that ED has one thing going for it, and that is sound design. The music is not distracting and does it's job as an atmosphere creator. The sound effects are well designed and balanced ... I have only one little thing that, for me, would make it perfect [heart]

I would like the sound of guns, especially multicannons to have this deep muffled sound, similar to what you can hear in battlestar galactica. I understand the whole "hearing in space" thing for gameplay purposes but I feel they could have done a better job at factoring the "vacuum of space" component. The multi cannons sound too much like a manual ice cream spinner in my humble opinion.

Well I while ago someone said that those are "virtual" sounds for battle awareness that's why you can hear then... and this looks like what frontier is doing... hence why the effects are diferent when you have only the helmet and a broken canopy...

Space isn't a vacuum!

Space isn't a vacuum!

So this is why we could hear Neil Armstrong hammering the flag on the moon. OK.
The sound of MCs used to be bigger but they EQ'd them. I used to like playing very loud with my sub-woofer. Now I use headphones instead. Then what about the Courier - LOL! This is just silly loud.

I get what you're saying but seriously though it isn't a vacuum.

Technically the moon was 'ringing' due to some pretty weird circumstances with the regolith versus the actual bedrock. Sound, is simply amplitude vs frequency at a level within the audible spectrum of the thing listening. You don't need (specifically) air to carry that vibration. Almost anything will act as a medium.

Along with the SRV scanner that has been EQ'd into near silence; virtually everything else I can get to hearing damaging levels. SRV Scanner? It sounds like unintentional ASMR at this point.

No, loud is boosting in a type-9.

Yeh I'd like MC's to sound a bit gruntier.

I mean how big is a 4A MC anyway? Based on the size of the ship they would be enormous.

About the same size as some of the guns on a battleship. The small Multi Cannons are bigger than the GAU-8 that is used on the Warthog, which IIRC uses a 30mm round.
The armaments in ED are truely gargantuan, it's a shame that the audio doesn't do this fact justice. Given the quality of other effects I do agree that cannons and multi-cannons are lacking.

A bit of vacuum-ness into the sounds would give it the correct depth, I think you're right. Something like half-way through the airlock in the Hellion game. Or maybe adding some random deep ambient sounds when you're closer to some audible objects like stations and other ships.

All the sounds you hear in game are from the ship. It generates the sounds, so you are not actually hearing the actual noise made by things outside your ship.

I the multicannons disappoint, don't ever try the actual cannons.

Not tried cannons on my own ship but you hear this BOOM BOOM BOOM sound from other ships which I've always assumed are cannons. Those sound utterly awesome.

Yeah multis could do with sounding a bit meatier

Also the *plink* *plink* *plink* sounds you hear produced by your ships audio when you hit another ships shield.

I know it's just a signal sound but it just sounds so weedy.

Of course you do. When the ship is passing by for instance, you could hear the pop pop pop thrusters sound of it.

Have you been dying to push this fact? :p

For all intents and purposes it may as well be a vacuum. You should say it isn't a "true" vacuum.

Are we discussing sound in the game or few atoms of dirt, gentlemen? This dirt has enough space among them they can't transfer any vibrations and we could say for the purpose of sound mechanics, it has the same attributes as the vacuum. Let's move to the original topic :D
