FDL or FAS

At least I hope we can agree to disagree :)

Always. Never going to bash someone for their opinion, as long as they remember to keep it an opinion ;)

I'd want an FDL if it looked like the picture behind the link, including colour.

Ohyus. That's a nice looking ship right there. Always said that FD could make a lot more money if they actually invested in some interesting paint jobs. I know that in the world of development nothing is "quick and easy", but for the effort it would take to give the majority of ships at least a couple of unique paint jobs rather than the generic military/tactical/vibrant packs buying the paints would be much more appealing. And themes from concept art can never be a bad way to go.

I posted a video a couple of days ago of me in a Courier vs NPC Anaconda. Some people complained (as they do) that I didn't use FAOFF. Well in that thing I didn't need to. I don't think the Annie had a single shot on me either - it didn't have turrets so that was that.
I stayed behind it until it ran away on 8%

you really dont need FA OFF in a fight if you strafe a lot like you did.. (and i do aswell)

Strafing, and drifting is more effective then FA off for me in a dog fight..

Though it pains me to say it, fas. And this is coming from a longtime fan of plasma accelerators, I have no trouble hitting with them (after much practice I should add).

As much as I want the fdl to be the superior boat, it just.. isn't. It has the shield tank advantage for sure, but it's done for if the shields go out. Meanwhile the fas feels just as survivable if not more so with just a bi-weave, couple of boosters and its mighty hull. The shield can disappear fast sure but the hull just laughs off damage, and after it takes a breath from laughing the shield is back up already. This gives it much superior longevity as there's no reliance on cell banks or long waits to get your shield 'armour' back up.

Then after toughness, in all other combat characteristics the fas can again either keep up with or outclass the fdl. Firepower about equal but oh wait, the fas's secret extra weapon, *ramming*!

Straight line speed ok fdl wins but it's not a game changer, and then manauverability.. While I like the skiddiness of the fdl, and it can be put to good use situationally, the fas's turning on a dime vulture-style is simply more advantageous more often. When you want to drift you can do so by choice rather than being forced to.

Final nail which resulted in me selling my fdl was moving to a twin size 3 plasma build, it killed the fdl'a niche for me, same job but better in every regard. I'll be re-buying one again once the new weapons hit though for sure - size 4 multi on it is going to be tasty :)

I'm going to be quite bias, I don't run meta builds on my FDL i have maybe 500 mj shields and 900 hull with fixed weapons, I do perfectly fine in PVP.

They are honestly both awesome ships.

With the new weapons coming i will try the FDL again.. Also, i wonder how the missiles will do on the FDL.. going to play with it again.

Still, it stays a Shield ship.. and i prefer a hull tanker.

Based on all the lovely information I see here and thank you all very much...I'm going to stick with the FAS. I might play with an FDL once the new class 4 weapons hit, but all around I'm happy with what I have.

I've also learned some things too. Like many people here I've learned a lot about this game from others, but I've also taught myself things through trial and error. For example, I tried the iCourier several times in combat hated it. I love the cockpit and the speed, but once the shields went down that was it. Reading these posts I can see I either outfitted it wrong or flew it wrong, or both. I might give it another go and next time keep the weight down.

I also am admittedly NOT a great pilot. I rarely if ever use FAOFF and don't strafe at all...basically because I either don't know how or because when I do it I don't do it right. I tend to fly right at my opponent, trying to keep my speed in the Blue fire maneuvering, and more or less fly in a big circle. I instead speed when I've got their back to stay on their back, but yeah that's mostly how I fly. Very simplistic, very rudimentary...but in a Vulture or a FAS I can make it work. I think if I moved into a FDL I'd be in trouble lol.

Oh agreed, there's nothing wrong with the fdl it's still an awesome ship. I don't 'meta' either, I fly what I enjoy. And the fdl is sure enjoyable. Especially with 4 fixed multicannon & plasma, one of the most fun things I've flown. But if I had to pick one forever, it'd be a teary goodbye to the spaceyacht as I boosted away in the spacewarthog.

I prefer the FAS because i like hull tankers..

the FDL NEEDS its shields.

also, 2 large 2 medium hardpoints deals more damage then 4 mediums. (im not counting the HUGE because while it hit as a sledgehammer, its DPS sucks compared to 2 large hardpoints.)

Now with the new huge weapons coming in 1.6 this will change. A huge multicannon, and 4 medium bursts is really something im looking forward to.. But still, i do prefer hull tankers over shield tankers.

But then again, 2 large multi cannons and 2 medium rail, or beams, on the FAS in 1.6, is also lovely.

FDL can do stealth pretty well. It's no Hull tanker but with 6 Utilities it can remain under pretty much permanent silent running.
