FdL when piloted well is arguably the best combat ship in all Elite. FdL piloted badly is one of the most annoying experiences a startup combat pilot can experience in, again, all Elite.

Personally I like it, especially now that we have more options for the class 4 hardpoint than just a PA.

So if you want to try, go ahead. Put some lasers in C2s and something kinetic and hard-hitting in C4, engineer the thrusters, slap a load of shield boosters on her and hooray into battle. :)
Though be warned, she's unwieldy, drifty and sounds like a wounded gargoyle. It's an... acquired taste.

Otherwise try Mamba. Equally awesome. :)

I would love to know what people think about fitting a FDL for combat?
Combat is the best thing to fit the FdL out for, you could try other roles but it really isn't laid out for much else.

I had my FdL fitted with multi-cannons on the medium hard points and a gimballed huge beam laser on that hard point, almost empty the capacitor using the beam to demolish the targets shields than let it recover while the multis chew its hull to bits.

If you can come to terms with the handling, which isn't to everyone's taste, then it can be a great ship to fly.

I just got into a FDL last week and it is a fun ship for combat, I like it a lot. The offset cockpit and part-obscured canopy is my only gripe. Once I'd engineered my heat issues out of it I love everything else about it.

What heat issues did you have?

All fixed now. I had overdone the beams and dirty drives and whenever I got too excited with the trigger in combat I was overheating and causing damage. Series of rookie errors in the loadout, had thought that I had read somewhere that the FDL runs naturally cooler than it does. Fixed it with a bit of swapping around and engineering, thanks.

It's so good it's boring.

It runs rings around any large ship and most mediums, has the class 4 hardpoint to just laugh at the hardness/penetration dichotomy, has an oversized powerplant that means it can power basically any build without running into heat or power issues, and enough class 2 hardpoints to fit a couple of gimballed weapons to deal with fighters and annoying Eagles in conflict zones and extraction sites.

Can you post a spec please?

I like the FDL. It's my assassin. I like to stack those missions and take the FDL to complete those contracts. My FDL has been through some changes. It used to have armor on it, but once I got the shields done I realized all that mass was just slowing me down. Shields like these will never be shot away in PvE.

Eagle Weslake

Great speed, good firepower, awesome shields/resistances. Keeping the mass down (416t combat loaded) retains the agility and maximizes speed. The limited optionals mean it's going to be a specialized combat craft, but what else would you use it for? :)

Class 4 multicannons have no spin time. By placing that weapon and the two smaller autoloaders together on the same firegroup it in essence creates a dual-stage trigger. Short pulls spit out single corrosive shells. Hold it down and the autoloaders spin up and kick in. Versatile and allows me to make good use of the corrosive effects without being profligate with the autoloaders.

All of my ships must meet two criteria. 30 jump and 500 boost. The speed is never an issue with this ship, and the GFSDB is there to meet the other requirement. It's a ship that has it all really. The only drawback is it will 'mush', during hard maneuvering it will continue along that vector until it can overcome it and accelerate along the new vector. It's a ship best flown with this in mind so that you always retain forward speed.

Hmm. I really ought to rake out "Angua von Uberwald" one day - I had built her for hazres work but she was ousted by another ship.

I fly an FDL for hunting all the time. With a 4A Pulse Laser and four 2F Multicannons, one with corrosive, I have no problems taking out NPC's in the HighRes site. While it isn't as nimble as smaller craft, it is able to turn quick enough to get a target back in sight.

How does it compare to, say, a cutter in taking down the baddies? My cutter has two huge beams and MCs for everything else.

OP, What is your desired endgame? If it is PvP, the FDL is THE PvP ship of choice. It's incredibly maneuverable and powerful at the same time; no other medium can match it. If you are going to PvP sometime in your future, I suggest OC multicannons in the mediums and a huge PA (efficient). In competitive PvP you will need to master PAs and rails. You can get away with an all gimballed overcharged multicannon build, but tbh, it's not as much fun. :)
