"Feathered Animal Pack"

Yeah this is pretty much what i think will happen if we don't get an aviary pack... we'll just get some other "non-flying" habitat birds... which honestly i'm fine with IF from now on we do get birds in every pack.

So my list...

1. Grey crowned crane
2. Secretary bird
3. Mandarin duck
4. Marabou Stork
5. Golden pheasant
6. Emu
7. Scarlet ibis

Choosing just 7 is hard i would also like a rhea but the emu is a very important omision from the australia pack and we should get it eventually (i just think is weird that it wasn't included from the start so i think it might come later on... maybe in a grasslands pack?). I would also like a kiwi, that would be a very special bird to get, but the rest of these are higher on my wishlist before the kiwi.

I chose the mandarin duck because is my favorite duck, but as long as we get at least 1 duck and 1 swan i'll be happy, whatever species they turn out to be... but really, we need waterfowls and i'm a bit worry that we end up with none because the perfect pack to introduce one was the Wetlands pack.

Another two that were hard to cut from this are the roseate spoonbill (but i'd rather get an ibis over a spoonbill) and the shoebill.

  • Maleo
  • Ocellated turkey
  • King eider
  • Kakapo (I would like to see this animal in the game)
  • Secretary bird
  • Sandhill crane
  • Greater roadrunner
  • Burrowing owl

Nice idea. Really great

Why no exhibit animal?
Yeah, a bird + glass? Um, not the best idea. I've seen it done, though: before it got torn down, the bird house at the H-Town Zoo had glass aviaries, but they had to teach the birds by soaking the windows.

Anyways, my 7 birds:

  1. Horned screamer - shut up and agree with me, now, or else. I love these guys
  2. Scarlet ibis - the beautiful red coloration is what I'd love to see in a SA section
  3. Whooping crane - I've only seen them at the H-Town Zoo, but they have a full net over their home. But, I'm sure it'll apply like the crane we're getting, right?
  4. Turkey - I mean, why not?
  5. Shoebill - these are from Africa, right? I can't remember. Either way, a nice addition
  6. Helmeted guineafowl - the blue head will look striking in any African enclosure
  7. Emu - no need to explain

but they have injuries and can't
I'd exclude it for this reason alone - if the only way a bird can be kept in an open-air aviary is due to hand-rearing or injury, then it's a bird that would require an aviary under normal circumstances.

For the same reason I'd exclude most common parrots. Plenty of zoos keep cockatoos and macaws in open enclosures because they're trained as pets to stay in one area, but in Planet Zoo they'd certainly be wild animals that would fly away.

Hmm interesting challenge. I would love more birds so lemme think of a list:

1. Grey Crowned Crane, I just adore these pretty birds!
2. Emu, would love to add them to my kangaroo habitats mix en up.
3. Carribean Flamingo, a species with a different colour and different habitat. Cool to add for variation or to add both species in different areas.
4. Kiwi, a smaller bird and New Zealand representation in game.
5. Helmeted Guineafowl, also small but fun to keep in big flocks on a savannah for example.
6. Painted Stork, an Indian/Asian addition in this pack. Adds a stork bird to the Zoo roster.
7. Occelated Turkey, a special colorful addition people won't expect I guess.

bonusses:
  • I picked Emu over rhea because Rhea are more similar to the Ostrich we already have.
  • Secretary Bird was a choice, but I've never seen them outside an aviary. Here they are always fully covered.
  • Shoebill is interesting as well, but didn't want to make it too much of an Africa Pack.
  • Grey Crowned Crane over other species because it is distinct different.
  • I didnt add ducks, swans or pelicans yet, but I would gladly trade the Flamingo for a pelican species.

  1. Shoebill stork, I adore the looks of these guys
  2. Red-legged seriema, they make fantastic noises and look pretty unique
  3. Western capercaillie, gorgeous, with some pretty extreme sexual dimorphism which would be super fun to see in-game
  4. Any other ratite than the ones we have already, they're all great, but especially one of the kiwis
  5. Scarlet ibis, they're so vibrantly coloured and I love them
  6. Grey peacock-pheasant, or maybe the Himalayan monal, stunning birds
  7. Galapagos/flightless cormorant, though this one's more of a pipedream as I don't believe they're kept in any zoos. Still, we have the wild water buffalo setting a precedent there, ha.

I would say tough one, if there wouldnt be so many good choices from all ober the world!

1. western capercaillie: a big ass european forest chicken with huge sexual dimorphism. The males are black with long tail feathers standing in a cone, red eyelids and the bulk to pack a punch, while the females are smaller, brownish and much more stealthy. Props the best european bird reps possible

2. White faced whistling duck: Propaply my most wanted animal for the game right now. Its a pretty, tropical duck that is tough enough for temperate weather and lives in south america, africa and madagascar.
Its range of continents alone makes it a top tier pick, but its also very visually distinct from the mandarine duck and the common european ducks to stand out if they ever should be added. + madagascar rep!

3. Marabu stork: Big, ugly, unique. We need a stork in the game and these guys arnt just big, they are massive, both in soze and captive numbers.
No matter what other stork would be added to the game, these guys would still stand out with their big ugly faces and crude apperance. + they can easily be mixed and mashed with african ungulates, so thats a plus aswell.
Overall loveable meatheads

4. Black swan: This people is one of the few animals i would call a 10/10 s tier addition to the game.
The answer for the question mark inside your head is simple, it covers so much whats needed and not present in the game right now. Its a swan, waterfowl, that likes to hang put in park like areas, but also can easily fit into themed sections of its native range, the australian wet lands. We need australian animals and the black swan would not only occupy a completly new niche for australia, but the game and europe aswell, because they actually arnt uncommon here either, as many once captive animals are now living in our parks and ponds. Overall majestic animal that checks all the Boxes.

5. Golden pheasent: There are so many kinds of pheasents that could easily be added to the game, but this one is without a doubt the most common and with good reason. Its striking gold appearance is unlike any other animal in the game, as bright yellow normally isnt a favourable color to be, so i would love to welcome our first truly yellow and proud animal into the game. And the fact that its the 15. Most common animal in european zoos just sweetens the deal
Goldfasan.jpeg.jpg

6. Bar-headed goose: Joining us from india and the himalaya is the bar-headee goose, the most common non domestic goose in european zoos.
I chose them over other common goose for three reasons:
1. Their range of india and north of the himalaya. These goose are known for migrating across it and would be a nice addition to not just the allready quite diverse india themed areas, which would love some waterfowl for its many ponds, but also the by now quite lacking himalaya, which only has two of its apex predators and the red panda, aswell as the asian steppes, where only the camel is home right now.
It only closely edged out its closest contender the barnacle goose here, which lives in the euroasian palearctic zone and just in general is less flexible in its use cases.

2. Their biomes would be very diverse, featuring tropical, grassland and alpine atleast.

3. I just think they are the prettiest wild goose. This might be highly sibjective, but in the end apperance will defenetly by a factor for the enjoyment of the animal
images.jpeg-13.jpg

7. The Great white Pelican: last but not least we have the most common pelican in european zoos and the one with the largest habitat, spanning across africa, europe and asia. While i myself am not really attached to the pelican, i can agree on an objective level that this would be a great addition to the game. I simply choose the most common in zoos, but i dont really habe strong feeling one way or another, eventhough i do believe that the species with the largest range should rule supreme.

And thats it! 7 birds that i honestly believe would all be atleast an 8/10 addition to the game.
For some popular animals that i left out, i just dont feel like they are as needed for general use as these 7.
For example, the kiwi would be great, but theres also a really limited number of them outside of new zealand and when we are talking about a group thats in such dire need of fleshing out i prefered some general sweeping picks across some of the most well known bird groups not featured in the game yet that also are unlike any other bird in the game.
We got a duck, a goose, a swan, a stork, a pheasent, a pelican and a grouse, spanning across allmost all continents with many cross continental picks.
Same reasoning goes for the emu amd rhea, as i wanted to first focus on other, less represented groups.
NA got the short end of the stick, because while i would love a domestic turkey in the game i think all these other birds have priority. The animal it contended the closest with, the capercaillie, also only made the cut because we finally got a crane this pack.
So sorry darthquell, no murrica for you
But i hope you still like the pack :)

We all want birds, but there's never been any guarantee they are coming. However, we have had a bone thrown our way with the addition of the red-crowned crane to the Wetlands Animal Pack.

So this thread is a bit of a game, I guess. Create an animal pack with only birds (no exhibit animals), but the one rule is that the birds don't fly. What that means is, no including birds that would require an aviary to contain. What kinds of birds don't require aviaries in zoos? Typically these are pheasants, waterfowl, waders, ratites, and so on; often these birds can fly, but either don't or are prevented from doing so.

Just to head off the inevitable, I'll also say that the puffin is a bird that requires an aviary. I have gone digging, and have yet to find a zoo that displays them outside of an aviary or indoor habitat they can't escape from. Puffins are accomplished fliers even if we usually only see them diving or chilling on cliffs.

Why no exhibit animal? Because while there are birds that would likely be small enough to be contained in an exhibit (hummingbirds) I don't believe Frontier would actually do that, and there is precedent for excluding an exhibit animal where no obvious choice exists (the Arctic Pack).

So I'll start things off:
  1. Southern ground hornbill.
  2. Himalayan monal.
  3. North Island brown kiwi.
  4. Emu.
  5. Mute swan.
  6. Grey crowned crane.
  7. Helmeted guineafowl.
I think this is doable without the aviary mechanic.

Oceania Bird Pack

Kiwi
Lyrebird
Australian Brush Turkey
Black Swan
Emu
Australian Pelican
Kagu

Could've also included the little blue Penguin which lives in Australia and New Zealand but those other Species are just way more unique compared to the Birds we already have in the Game

I don't think they exist in captivity but I'd love a kakapo. They're flightless parrots (and super goofy in both looks and personality). Only issue is that IRL they are not kept in zoos, I believe they physically can be kept in zoos, it's just that it would require capturing wild kakapo to create a domestic population (which unless they absolutely cannot be saved as a species otherwise, would be unethical IMO).

Still, despite the break in realism I'd absolutely love to have them.

Edit: Also they'd be Critically Endangered, which I love more representation of more severely endangered animals, and I think it'd be awesome to raise awareness for the plight of Kakapos because I think if more people were aware of them they'd fall in love with them and want to save them.

God, there's so many good ones. To pick just an animal pack is hard but I'll try to aim for true essentials (in my opinion, which mostly applies to American zoos):

  1. Either Ground Hornbill Species
  2. North Island Brown Kiwi
  3. Emu
  4. Secretarybird
  5. Grey-Crowned Crane
  6. Brown Pelican
  7. Mandarin/Wood Duck
  8. Golden Pheasant
