feature: hail to appologise

so i'm sure it's happened to all of you.

OOH there's an unidentified signal source there...

it's three system security beating up a cobra. i'll join them i guess.

... that system security just flew right into my bullets

oh, now i'm wanted and i can't do anything about it even though i was trying to help the system security.

oh, now they're attacking me

couldn't i have hailed system security to say i was helping them / that i wasn't attacking them?

Agreed..they have to somehow change this..

Maybe the system security forces would only start to attack you if you do over a certain amount of damage to them? (then you are intentionally firing on them).
But having them turn on you based on accidental or 'friendly fire' is screwy game mechanics (IMHO)

yeah there are some things (especially this) i'd like to see changed

i'd like to be able to speak to other players more easily. the only time i made a friend so far was after i showed a guy a palladium asteroid when i was mining

otherwise everyone's too busy to stop to talk

general hailing updates required, i hate to use it as an example because it's really not as good, but in X3TC you could hail and say "oops, didn't mean to fire at you" and even get missions from random passerbys

I think that if your ship targetting system is locked on a specific target and you fire on it but a ship crosses your path the computer should be smart enough to figure out that the crossing ship was not the intended target. As is the htiscan/collision detection values are absolute and not target dependent. If your targeting system is unlocked ok maybe but if you lock on target you should not be penalized for stray shots.

How about the faction choice button? You could elect to side with the System Authority ships and then they would forgive you a few stray bullets. I suggest it because the option is already present in the game, so it doesn't require a new item to be added.

I like the way it works in Skyrim. You whack someone by accident and if you put your weapon away then there is a chance they let you off. ED could have something similar. Or, as OP says, a hail. That hail might carry more weight if you are in good standing and if you have put your hard points away. It even gives the accidental target a chance to reply in character. I think it is a great opportunity to add a nice little dynamic.

i really think that there should be a whole system with lots of different dialogue options for hailing.

people say the game is shallow, and while i don't really agree, i can say that if there was more NPC/world interaction, or even more player interaction it wouldn't be so easy to call shallow.

you don't talk to anyone right now.

Absolutely. This would just be one option. I think the idea with piracy was/is to have a standard - 'you are being pirated' official declaration of piracy. This 'sorry' would be another and I guess 'docking request' is a third. I think it all fits nicely.

Easier option Just kill the system security guys aswell lol, = bigger bounty = more people chase ya ass, = more kills then go clear bounty on ya head = job done :)

Once communications with npc's are possible, this should definitely be one of the options.

A surrender option would also be much appreciated. Meaning bounty hunters can ask a criminal to surrender, so they can be apprehended for an even bigger bounty.

I had a similar problem in GTA, any infraction let to the police trying to kill you. Which was appropriate, given the caricature nature of the game, but also subtlety is hard to code. Judgement is not something that computers are easily good at.

I can't see how apprehending a wanted fugitive would work. How long does a player have to spend in prison unable to play the game?

A couple of situations:

* The criminal surrenders/complies:
- Board ship -> take pilot into custody -> put him into your cargohold -> return to station -> deliver to the authorities -> recieve bounty + extra money.
* The criminal does not comply:
- Shoot ship -> pilot ejects -> scoop up pilot -> put him into your cargohold -> return to station -> deliver to authorities -> recieve bounty + extra money.
- Shoot ship -> pilot dies in crash -> recieve normal bounty.

In case of a player pilot, why not just let him "respawn". He will have to pay his bounties and may be treated with some leniency by the authorities for turning himself in. Spending time in prison would maybe be realistic. But it would not fun and quite pointless in terms of gameplay, so no prisontime. If the player's ship survived, it would drift in space and he would be able to recover it in some kind of way.

Assuming it hasn't already been done since release and I somehow am missing it, I would like to add my voice to the requests for a way to surrender. I wouldn't mind if they took the creds right then, too, really, or some such. But being marked for death after one weak laser shot grazes a cop's shields seems just a little overkill. Par for the course for my country, but I'd rather we didn't have it happen in space.

Perhaps the first hit on a System defense ship will get you a fine and a loss of some standing with the faction that controls them as well as a warning over the comms not to do it again if you are in good standing with them , but further stray shots will make them hostile.

And if you have low-neutral or worse they will just attack.

This way a single stray shot while you are aiming at someone else would not be overly punished but there would be a reasonably realistic punishment for your carelessness.

As I've mentioned earlier, I agree that something should be done with the one-hit-aperage NPCs.

I don't get the rights to kill the guy who shot me with missiles because the AI doesn't recognize me between him and the pirate I chase, neither should they get the right to kill me if they insist on boosting between me and my target.
