I have always loved designing ships and would love to do it here! Obviously a moderation process would need to be put into place, but it would be a great way to reach out to more talented people who may feel that they can only do one thing in ED, but love structural design and would love to design something, can feel more welcome and can stretch their creative muscles! I would love to see something where a user could buy a template (say they buy a template for 1mil for the Imperial Clipper) they then can use tools like Photoshop to design their own colours, paints, and more. Then they can take the ship into any 3D modeling software to change the interior and exterior design, then use a custom-built tool in the game to select how many modules they want of each class (each template has a limit hard-coded). Further, this design could then be taken to ports and offered to sell to them.
For example: User would go to Olker System and dock at Hovgaard City, then they would go into the Shipyard section and a new button titled "Offer User-Made Ship to Station for Sale" (or something similar or shorter), then you can go through and offer your ship for sale. If accepted, you will be given a set number of credits for the initial contract, then you will get a small portion of each sale (10-60% depending on Boom-State, controlling faction, etc.). This would allow the player to earn passive money and if the station is under, say, Federal control, it will appear at ALL Federal Star Ports!
Just an idea, probably won't be easy, but it would make the game much more interesting and quite a bit more fun!
