Engineers [FEATURE REQUEST] Station Cargo Storage

With the advent of 2.1 this has now become critical.

Many of the materials for Engineer modifications are actual cargo tonnage, not a part of the "materials" storage, they require actual cargo capacity to store and transport.
The problem I face, and I am sure MANY more people, is that the ability to permanently store these goods in our cargo hold is totally impractical. My ship of choice is the Fer-de-Lance. I spend most of my time in it, I prefer combat to any other pursuit, but right now at this moment I cannot even take it out of storage and use it because the existing system requires my cargo be transferred to the active vessel. It is utterly impossible for me to even mount the required cargo capacity on my FdL without stripping it of ALL combat survivability, ie. Shield Generator and Shield Cell Bank. God alone knows what the situation must be for those who prefer fighters like the Viper or Vulture.

Never before has this been more absolutely required.
There simply MUST be the ability to rent a station based storage capacity for the accumulation of these materials outwith the cargo capacity of the active ship, because by design some ships DO NOT have a practical cargo-carrying ability, that's not what they are for.

My proposition is that space can be rented at any large starport, based on tonnage capacity and length of time. For example, I could rent 100T of capacity for a year for 1 million credits, or whatever.
Right now, where I live, I can go to the harbour and rent a cargo container rated for 30T, for a year, for a couple hundred pounds. You can't tell me that in the 31st millennium no-one is selling cargo capacity on a large starport facility.

Oh and I am not referring to ship fittings or the like, only cargo storage.

Been on the FRL (Frequently requested list) for a very long time now.

Last I remember the word was it's coming eventually but not yet and no promises..

Yeah, but my point was more that now, with 2.1, this isn't just a nice feature any more...this is a requirement.

I'm bumping this back to the top.

No need to do that really. I think it was during the 2.1/1.6 release livestream the dev said that storage was high on their list now, and he hoped it would come sooner rather than later. Im just hoping we get it in a smaller patch instead of in 2.2.

I think it's vital to do it, really. This is an indefensible point, there has ben a couple of other threads on this very subject in the wake of 2.1, and it needs to be made abundantly clear to Frontier that there is a loud call for not just a nice feature, something we'd LIKE to see, that would be handy...but now a VITAL feature that's going to be needed for some of us who want to be able play the game a little differently, in a ship that was never designed to be able to haul cargo everywhere all the time, but still benefit from all their hard work in Engineers.
I consider this a major balance issue. Some vessels are now, simply, completely misbalanced from an Engineer modification POV.

This is an absolute must.

You cannot be expected to haul engineer related cargo around the galaxy all the time especially as it makes you a target in any nav beacon or resource extraction side.

There are higher level locked upgrades for later on in the game that I have cargo for now and it's annoying as I will have to get rid of it as toting cargo around is a liability at the best of times.

+1 This really should have been in 2.1 as its pretty integral to engineers upgrading when they ask for commodities as well.

They could offer a decent functionally useful amount of storage for average traders and for Eng requirements and via the FD store offer the option to pay for a monthly
major increase for ongoing storge (kinka like Dropbox does for pro and business users) but that when you gather items you have an on the fly option to insta transfer them to this storage area...might be stretching the FD happy button a tad, but maybe offer module storage too while ur at it.

Yes at this point cargo storage is just mandatory. You can't have missions hand engineer cargo that we are forced to immediately throw away. Have storage restricted to engineer material if you want, but now it NEEDS to exist.

Strongly requested. Need for 2.2. Since, engineer might taste like a soft cake !

Well, in my opinion solution is relatively simple, I've seen similar in "Rebel Galaxy" game and it worked fine:
1. Add "inventory" category, available only in stations and planets with refitting ability. All Your stripped out/not installed modules go there. Items from this category do not take space in cargo bay (size/weight = 0).
2. If You want to install Your stored module, You can do it - at the station - for a small fee, lets say 100 credits for each module installed.
3. If You want to move to ship with smaller cargo bay, You must sell few tons of your cargo (amount that exceeds size of Your new cargo bay). Modules that give more cargo space can help You avoid that.
Simple? I hope so. And I hope we will see it in next update ;)

When I sold my hardware diagnostic sensors, in the commodity market screen it was revealed where this commodity could be bought.
So I assumed I can just sell the engineers commodities, bookmark the place where it can be bought and buy it when needed.
Will this not work?

I'd even like to see a place to store materials/data/etc at the engineering station itself. Sort of like a "here, hold this I'll be right back" temporary place to then draw on for upgrades. The engineer wouldn't mind, they have a whole planet for a cargo yard :)

This is at the top of my list also. I have about 18 tons of cargo that I am keeping for engineer mods.....I am unable to fly half my ship in storage because of this....if I had to pick one update over anything it would be addressing the cargo dilemma with engineers.
