Feature Request: Transfering Player To Stored Ships

Good afternoon,

I am hearing a lot of talk about people wanting ships transfered to a player location. That seems fine and all, but I'd love to be able to transfer myself TO the location of a stored ship.

Think about it, Uber, for Space.

For a fee, depending on distance, you can store your current ship, and fly in a fabulous Orca while you are fed the finest grapes the galaxy has to offer, on your way to the location of another ship you own.

I'd really like to go explore the galaxy, but I do a lot of bounty hunting with friends. This way, I can go explore and go crazy far, then transfer myself to my Vulture for killing time with friends.

Thank you,
CMDR Promius

Might sound like a good idea at first but:

  • Would you be happy if the ship that was transporting you on was interdicted and destroyed then you would have to pay again?
  • Would you be happy with the time it takes to fly you back (real time hours or even days if you are that far apart) - it could be quite a distance?

And I not only concur but offer to carry any CMDR anywhere for a fair price.
We also have classy Companions and Blackjack...

I would be very surprised if this was not implemented once EVA mode comes on-line. A potential scenario for instance, was sneaking aboard someone else's ship to hijack it.

I see no reason players should not be able to pay for passage on another ship just like an NPC. It could be implemented currently as a 'magic' transfer that just takes credits from your balance but happens instantly - only to a starport where you have a stored ship. For current play there would be no chance of an incident. When we have EVA mode, then of course if a ship you are on is interdicted or attacked, well hope there is an escape pod! Might be pretty cool.

Also, if you serve as crew on a friend's ship they can surely take you back to your own. Although this may be a 2018 development...

As far as the dangers of interdiction, destruction, and hijacking, all those scenarios should be covered to protect the passenger player, so all he may lose is time, and not any credits or his life. All that could be explained in game through various means.

Here's how I'd like to see the transit thing carried out.

A player signs up to be a shuttle pilot. He first gets simple NPC missions locally, and as he completes them successfully, he goes up in job status. At some point, he can fly longer routes for greater pay.

There are NPC pilots as well doing this same thing. So if someone buys a ticket to another system, they don't have to wait for some player to come along. But if there is a player in that role, they get matched up.

If a transit ship is destroyed, the passengers are sent back to the last station docked at, just as normal play. They are given an opportunity to get a refund (partial refund if not the origin station), or continue on with another pilot. If the pilot player decides to take a different route, at some point he will be mutinied against by the crew and the ship will get back on course, and that player will get heavy penalties, lose his license, etc. Maybe even jettisoned into space to arrival at the last port.

Bonuses given out based on early arrival times, as well as flight dynamics (flying smoothly, soft landings should get something for the effort).

Why not just be able to ask for "transportation to such-and-such a system, offering xyz credits" on a station bulletin board, the only requirement for acceptance being a ship that has a spare seat. It might mean some hanging about for a while, waiting for someone to accept (bad luck in a sparse area of the galaxy), but a bit more real than anything else. Future development could allow for a bonus based on time taken (and expand to other bulletin board missions).

The issue with not having some readily available service is that people won't use it as much if at all. Keep it easy, and more might do it just for the aspect of being a passenger, especially down the road when you can move around and look out the windows.

Have both :)
