If a 64 bit game why buy a new PC? Just upgrade to windows 7 (or 8) 64 bit and use the existing PC. Memory is cheap and odds are will run with the memory in the box already just won't be able to max it.

Even if a 32 bit OS is used you will want 4 gig of ram as the game will likely use a minimum of 2 gig and loading the OS and drivers and much less then 4 gig of ram will handicap it. So use a 64 bit OS and keep the memory you have it will run the game at 4 gig if you have it or 3, but the game can grow easier with more breathing room. Windows 7 or 8 will cost approx. $100 US, with year to go, roughly save $8 a month and you will have it.

I have a 64-bit laptop with 4GB RAM and a standalone ATI card, so I should be ok, but sometimes upgrading a PC isn't as easy as just slapping more RAM in. Processor, HD speed, GFX card power and all that jazz contribute to the performance of a PC. Nine times out of ten when I've upgraded my boxes in the past or when I've done it for friends and family, the processor and HDD create a bottleneck even with upgraded RAM.

And it all costs money. Which many of us may not have. A good portion of this community may have other concerns, such as families, mortgages, being a student and so on, and disposable cash may not be easy to come by.

In an ideal world FD are developing Elite to be compatible with current hardware, even if it means turning off some of the pretty features.

No intelligent felines or frogs for 'nostalgia':
Sandy: Ok – no real issue with this
Michael: What about intelligent cats that look like frogs?

Absolutely gutted :(

Me too... Goes away and sobs into some of his leftover textiles from the last trading run.... :(

Sadly not all Motherboards are able to manage more than 4Gb even if the OS can...

To repeat - Braben has said that ED is an "unashamedly high-end PC and Mac game". NO high-end PC, even of today, is 32 bit... let alone in a years time.

Jesus, I'm surrounded.

It means the game will be targeted and optimised for high-end PCs. It means those with high-end PCs will have the ability to experience the game at its fullest.

It doesn't mean that those without high-end PCs must go without.

Because, once again, rejecting a significant proportion of your player base is silly.

Is this seriously not bloody obvious to everyone else? You're all having me on, aren't you?

Nah, I just think it's about high time all top end games developers came out and said "32 bit's history", we're not even going to bother trying!

That'll happen when their consumers have decided 32-bit's history. And right now a significant portion haven't.

Pffft, the Steam numbers people have quoted are very misleading. People use Steam for World of Goo ! I think the poll on these forums for 32/64 bit are far more representative of PC gamers playing modern graphics-heavy games.

Well, I'd disagree (forums tend to attract those who spend more time on their computers), but even so... 5.58% is still a significant proportion.

Add in the fact that some 64-bit users will have less than 3GB memory, and the relative ease of creating a 32-bit binary once you're at that level anyway, and it's clear that there should be a 32-bit option.

Isn't there already a thread for this argument?

Might be worth moving this to there and letting this thread get back to its core topic.

The trouble with tribbles....

Will Tribbles slowly take over your cockpit view as they multiply onboard your ship? Will they even make an appearance? Like they did in the original 'elite'? I realise its a comical point and would not be at all surprised if you did not include them, but why not? Just for old times sake! :)

[/INDENT]On the subject of planets, many of you asked firstly whether we would have realistic planetary orbits in Elite: Dangerous and also whether the surface of a planet, as seen from space, would represent the economic or political state of that world.

My question, loosely based on this one is that when you fly around the planet (until the point where we can land on it), will cities and regions be lit up like when you see photos of Earths 'night' side?

Done well, that would be pretty spectacular imo.
