Feature Requests Update #14- Crime & Punishment
So we have reached the final episode of the feature requests updates and to cap it off we’re going to discuss crime and punishment. This edition is going to be short and sweet, but in my opinion still contains some gems of information. So for the final time in this series of updates, let’s get started!
Of course one thing that is synonymous with crime & punishment is the police that enforce the law. We had two enquiries that were specific about the police; the first of which asked whether the police would have the ability to jam player hyperdrives in order to help apprehend them. The team were happy to confirm that drive jamming technology would be available in Elite: Dangerous, which means that the technology could potentially be made available to the police:

Of course one thing that is synonymous with crime & punishment is the police that enforce the law. We had two enquiries that were specific about the police; the first of which asked whether the police would have the ability to jam player hyperdrives in order to help apprehend them. The team were happy to confirm that drive jamming technology would be available in Elite: Dangerous, which means that the technology could potentially be made available to the police:
Sandy: There will be methods of preventing a ship from entering hyperspace, as well as defenses against the jammers.
Michael: There is jump jamming technology.
A more unusual request regarding the police asked whether the Vipers that the police pilot will have the traditional ‘blues and twos’ of the current emergency services. Whilst there will be visual indicators so that the police stand out, the team are unsure whether this will take the form of a flashing blue light:Michael: There is jump jamming technology.
Sandy: Some visual indicator will be present, but this seems very kitsch.
Michael: We’ll see what works best.
Some of you had questions about what sort of punishments could be given to players, to discourage things such as ‘griefing’ other players. One such enquiry asked whether we would have the ability to demote players to travelling only within a specific system, this is an idea that the team were not keen on:Michael: We’ll see what works best.
Sandy: No, This is not in the existing design
Michael: This is not part of the current design.
Related to how the authorities and various factions react to your actions, some of you wanted to know if there would be a dynamic reputation system and also whether player actions would be reported galaxy-wide. This is half-yes from the team, as reputation and player actions will be mainly reported to whatever faction happens to operate in the specific part of space you’re in:Michael: This is not part of the current design.
Sandy: Yes – up to a point. Reputations will be reported as needed based on relevant faction presence and other factors. I.e. The fact that the Empire hates you personally doesn’t mean the Alliance cares about that in any way.
Michael:We’ll be investigating this in more detail, but reputations are currently faction based, although system based may also apply.
So we have reached the end of the road as far as these feature request updates go, hopefully you have found them illuminating. As I have mentioned in the previous updates, I plan to find something else to replace these that will be every bit as useful to you all. Hopefully I will have the opportunity to begin releasing these in 2 weeks time, so look out for it!Michael:We’ll be investigating this in more detail, but reputations are currently faction based, although system based may also apply.
