Feature Suggestion: Ship computer as upgradeable module

Hi everyone,

I guess I'm not alone in being frustrated at the inexplicable lack of some 'smarts' that might be expected from a computerized futuristic spaceship.

Example shortcomings as of 2.0/1.5:
- trade data (in-game solution: paper and pencil, out-of-game solution: fully searchable crowd-updated databases)
- galactic navigation, lack of bookmarking systems/stations (solution announced for 2.1)
- in-system navigation (when exploring, really hard to judge the actual 3D distribution of bodies to plan efficient scan route)
- in-system navigation (impossible to judge the slowdowns caused by nearby planet gravity, fastest route AtoB is not a straight line)

Proposal:

I would like to see the ship computer become a module like power plant or vehicle bay, with a spectrum of capabilities scaling with price. Maybe there is no need for classes (like cargo racks), but at least a full range of ratings. The computer would take the form of a base module, with varying amount of available resources/'slots' (like vehicle bay) for specialist program functions. The base computer does what is available now but the specialist functions allow more customization according to commander requirements. These could be very diverse, going well beyond my personal gripes listed above.

Example specialist ship computer functions:

Basic:
- HUD/flight director showing in-system fastest route to destination taking planet gravity slowdown into account
- auto-landing function (instead of as stand-alone module), also for surface landing (if a recalled ship can do it alone...)

Exploration:
- solving the traveling salesman problem for optimal route between all system bodies

Trading:
- in-game trade calculator

Combat:
- counter-ECM
- better chaff rejection
- higher shot accuracy

Smuggling/Bounty hunting:
- limited identity spoofing
- "these are not the droids you're looking for"-mode, balanced against scanner quality

These are just some of the ideas off the top of my head, to make our ships even more suited to our chosen style of play. If you have an opinion on this topic, please post it (stay constructive please), upvote, and help bring it to the devs' attention. If they have other plans fine, but at least consider the idea.

Excellent ideas here. I would like to add one more. Perhaps a computer module that can be used to display tactical hud data about your target such as velocity, the type of weapons equipped, heat levels, etc. Being able to match velocity with the target would also allow us to do some cool formation flying.
