Hello, Commanders! Welcome to our lucky thirteenth Featured Commanders thread of 2019! The majority of you have already heard of this fantastic content creator, but how well do you know... Commander Plater!
Hello, Commander Plater! Thank you for taking the time to talk with us, we're truly big fans of your work, but we want to know more. How and when did you find out about Elite Dangerous?
I initially found out about Elite Dangerous on it's public release, I saw the trailer where there are ships fighting around a station and I just knew that I needed to play this game. At the time had a pretty weak PC, so it wasn't until July of 2015 that I upgraded, picked up a flight stick, and got to my first dog fight and rebuy screen.
So you've been with the game for a long time! What actually got you hooked on Elite Dangerous?
Without a doubt, it was the combat that initially drew me in. I'm a big fan of old school space flight sim games for example; X-Wing, Wing Commander and Descent, and I really enjoy the flight model in Elite Dangerous. When you're using a HOTAS, you really feel like you are flying a spaceship! But ultimately, the thing that really got me hooked and kept me in the game is the community. Everyone is really supportive and will teach if you are willing to learn... oh, they'll also make fun of you if you loop of shame all the time!
That sounds awesome! Tell us, how long have you been creating content around Elite Dangerous?
I've been making videos for 3 years (I cant believe its been that long!) The thing that really got me into video making was a surgery that I had on my neck, by having the surgery I stood the chance of losing my voice. I didn't and I was desperate to use it, and I found that Elite Dangerous gave me that outlet.
What’s your favourite piece of content you’ve created around Elite Dangerous?
I've done two 24 hour charity streams, both raising money for the British Thyroid Foundation and we've raised over £12,000! I'm really proud of those streams and of everyone who got involved with them from the Elite Dangerous creator community. I chose the British Thyroid Foundation as the charity to support, as I am actually fighting Thyroid Cancer myself.
When it come to which videos are my favourite to make, those would be the Elite Wildlife ones like my most recent Anaconda video. They're great fun to film and allow me to take a break from the serious side of reporting on game changes.
Being such an experienced Commander, you must have learned a lot over the last few years! If you could give one piece of advice to every Commander, what would it be?
Elite Dangerous has a steep but very rewarding learning curve so don't give up. The game has an amazing community and they will support you in any way you ask or need, be it on Twitter, Facebook, the Forums or in-game, other Commanders will have your back.
Are there any other content creators you’d like to give a shout out to?
I would like to give a special mention to Commander Ascorbius who has been a great friend to me, both online and real life, and that's not to mention the great work he does with his videos. A lot of his heart and soul goes into them!
I would also like to mention Commander Mach1ne. He puts so much work into his Elite Dangerous story videos, and I really feel that he should have more people watching them!
Both fantastic suggestions! Do you have any cool projects on the horizon you’d like to tell us about?
I'm always working on something! I'm currently planning out something involving VR for Elite Dangerous which should be a real eye opener, so keep an eye out for that... no pun intended!
