Featured Creator: Uthris

Bo Marit

Every month we put four amazing Planet Coaster creators in the spotlight; each Featured Creator will have one week dedicated to them, their amazing Workshop, and other wonderful contributions to our community. This month we are talking to PixelWess89, Anigmandra, Wikz, and Uthris, who can also be found on the Planet Coaster globe!

Let’s hear it for Uthris!

How did you get started with Planet Coaster?
I first heard about the game after the initial release of the trailer and instantly wanted to get my hands on it - so I purchased the Early Bird Edition! Can't believe it's been that long ago, but currently it is by far my most played game!

What makes you (and your creations) stand out?
I think the most striking part of my builds are the silhouettes they have. I tend to portray weight/heavy assets at the bottom and try to make upper sections lighter and thinner. It gives the builds a nice sense of being grounded and it’s also structurally sound. I enjoy breaking the limit when it comes to part counts it seems.

And parking lots apparently.

What is your favourite feature in the game?
The ability to adapt any piece to create just about anything. There are limitations to this, but the community constantly sharing ideas have come up with some amazing techniques. Creating items and tile sets that aren't in the game by default is a very powerful tool. I've played my fair share of creative/building games, yet Planet Coaster is the first to allow me such detailed possibilities outside of a 3D modeling program!

What is your favourite creation/video you’ve ever created (so far)?
Alpine Odyssey does come to mind here, however it is not complete. So I think the Cathedral of Light from World of Warcraft is my favorite build. It was the first to have very dramatic themes, custom walls, spires and everything else I use today. I learned a lot through its creation and mistakes along the way!

How do you feel about being part of the Planet Coaster community?
As a backer of Elite I knew Frontier was great at building a strong community. That easily transferred over to Planet Coaster as you all are so passionate about the games being made. Being able to fly up to Boston, meeting Sam Denney, Bo, Ed, and all the other awesome people was a great memory and something I hope to do again. Watching the community pull together for Anneke and really show that this group of online strangers care for one another is quite emotional as well.

Tell us a little about yourself, what you study/work/do in real life.
I am 27 years old, with a degree from WVa in Fine Art (Specifically Painting). I work full time in accounting - doing payroll for federal contractors and even work with a few NASA programs. Besides that, YouTube is my second Job - creating content is something I enjoy immensely and having the community I do is very surprising coming from a small town of 3,000 people.

If you were to dress up as a Planet Coaster mascot, which one would it be?
A spin on Foxy would be interesting!

What inspires you?
The Planet Coaster community as a whole. Seeing excitement behind each great build, listening to the awesome feedback and new ideas that come from it. Seeing people really work on the smallest of details; then taking that and putting it into my own twist and style. The constant iterations of assets yet to be in the game - yet we can simply make it ourselves if need be. Looking at real world architecture and recreating it is another great joy/practice.

Tell us a little about your creative process – how long do your creations take, do you listen to music or work for hours and hours until something is perfect?
Like most creative processes I don't think there is one answer to this. Some days can be harder than others, but in general constant trial and error is how I go about making all my items. Any one of my videos on YT is about 3-4 hours of work. Sometimes it can be created in one evening; other times when it’s a struggle it has to be split across multiple sessions.

Pass on the praise: which creator do YOU admire?
I could easily name people that I'm sure others have heard. However, I think the praise from me needs to go to the people who play this wonderful game for themselves. The ones who can put 1,800 hours into a game without the constant pressure of having a channel or many followers on the workshop. The large part of the community who are the silent workers and builders who use the game to relax in the evening. As if they are simply building a personal model in the basement for their own enjoyment. That is the community in which; when we meet and share our creations for the first time it’s like discovering a great friend from under your nose. The effect of Planet Coaster, and the monthly spotlights showcasing each of these new faces - is a wonderful/beautiful thing.

Happy and proud to be a part of it all.

Enjoyed reading your interview Uthris. It's so nice to get to know your PC friends a little better. Thanks for sharing :)
