Features that AREN'T in the original game.

While reading this http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=6179 thread I had a thought....

What features in ED, that are likely to appear, would be totally alien to those who have only played original Elite and have not played the variations that have come out since the best of the best was released?

I'd like to know what's coming at me before I load and run! ;)

[EDIT] I know this may require some level of ESP and foretelling of the future but, if you don't have these skills, you could mention features from the subsequent games instead if you think they're likely to turn up in ED

I only played classic Elite (ZX Spectrum and BBC versions)

Multiple ships is the most obvious.

Missions from the outset (these were reserved for the Elite IIRC)

Coloured, filled in GFX rather than wireframe.

Enriched sound.

Quicker loading times ;)

The control scheme and flight-mechanics will be deeper. Fly-by-wire will have some Newtonian style 'skid', and you will also be able to switch to 'manual' mode for different yawing/strafing type options.

The number of different weapons and ship modules is likely to be increased by quite a lot.

The exploring role will be more fleshed out and formalised as something to make money from.

I'm hoping there will be more HUD stuff, like targeting/tagging ships so it's easier to follow them when they go off-screen during a dogfight.

Not exactly features, but the biggest differences are:

Factions. In the original there was the Galactic Co-operative and the Thargoids (and you couldn't play for the Thargoids:p) In the newer games that has been replaced by the Federation, the Empire and the Alliance and some independents.

Multiple bodies in systems. Most of the solar systems are more realistic instead of consisting of a star , a single planet and a single station.

Oh .. I think by far the BIGGEST difference will be freedom of movement:

  • Elite - boxes of space that you hyper spaced between
  • ED - free roaming space* ...

*Well, this came up in a DDF topic conversation and I think we all went nuts over the fact that FD wanted to do boxes in space and, to be blunt, that would have been a major step backwards ... they are reconsidering but nothing confirmed yet.

Multiplayer
More cargo types
Ship equipped based on ship tonnage/equipment tonnage
More equipment types
Larger hyperspace ranges
Planetary landing

Hm. How about flight mechanics - still the newtonian jousting matches, or a more digfightey-mechanic?

more dogfighty. Although tbh I found that even in Frontier and FFE once you mastered matching velocities and getting close it was pretty easy to maintain a dogfight - it didn't get jousty unless you got careless. Except with the really small ships like hawks and falcons. They were a PITA to fight,

Was there any carebears in the original game? Im really worried coz it keeps being brought up in this game... and it will ruin my immersion if they're not!!

You won't hear THIS every time.

Did we really used to have that much patience... If I remember correctly Elite loaded all the way up to 4E. which is probably about 15 mins..... now im thinking of getting a SSD just for Elite so it loads faster than I can click the shortcut on my desktop :D

Having a camera on the spaceship for taking pictures and save them on the hard drive. I would like to do an album of what I see and live, in Elite.
