Fed Dropship Mk 2, really FD???

Just the sounds a FDS makes when you try to make it turn or slow down makes it a great ship to fly , to hear theres gonna be a Mrk II is music to my ears , I hope it groans n moans as much as the current version . Thank you FD :)

I'm super confused as to why an upgraded variant of a ship nobody flies because it's "bad" is seen by anyone as a bad thing.

Wouldn't it be -good- to have a better version?

Honestly I get the feeling that any haters here are just empire pilots worried that the blatant factional favoritism of the current ship spread is finally coming to an end.

Only a few complain.
In general people seem to like it I think.
I most certainly do.
But I do hope the new Federal Dropship variant looks physically different too (see my previous post).

Just add nacelles and a spoiler? No seriously, for anyone who likes the current Dropship design and would just wish for it to perform better, a new Dropship MK II that not only performs better, but also has a different, this is a double-edged sword. Just like I, who loves the design of the Eagle, but would like it to perform better (read: faster) to be less of a piece of cannon fodder - instead of properly buffing the existing ship, they modify the design, give it better stats, and release it as a new ship, leaving the old one in just as bad a position as ever, while not even fulfilling the hopes of those who already like the existing ship design, thank you very much.

I am all for ship variants that are genuine choices for entirely different tasks, like the DBS and DBE, but not variants that are basically an MK II replacement.

The mere fact that the current dropship is so rarely seen in the hands of cmdrs is a good reason as any to update it.

As I just said, it is not updated, but effectively replaced.

Hi All,

Loved my dropship, keeping meaning to revisit it when I have spare cash (Pythons take a lot of upgrading!). I should be in the position to consider a Dropship again about 1.4 time so all great for me.

Not being an arty type, I am sure how much time and effort it actually saves FD to do a variant rather than a new ship. Balancing pricing, initial concept to model would seem like the same work to me as tkaing one of the classic designs from an old game and modelling fo ED.

Absolutely. More ships is more choice and that is always good. As an Empire person myself I did agree that the Federation was getting too little attention. The Alliance can go jump however.

FD committed to 30 ships I believe and the concern for a lot of people is that in order to reach that target, instead of making 30 unique ships all with their own style and feeling, they are going to strap a few bits on existing ships and call it a new ship. If that’s their plan it just seems lazy.

So if they are going to take the time to make 30 unique ships and add a few variants of existing designs then this is welcome news. Hell I might even try out the new dropship.
However if this is the way they are going to make up the numbers, it’s disappointing.

Yes, sadly making a scratch built ship takes roughly 2 months from what FD says. So I assume they are making them as fast as they can. They are not just silly looking polygons with extremely low textures anymore.
I hope that the Diamondback Explorer didn't take 2 months to make, since it's got the Diamondback Scout's cockpit and it's hull is made of the Scout's parts copy/pasted.

I'm an Empire pilot and I agree with you. I think a lot of Empire pilots would actually welcome more Fed ships

I do like the situation with the DBS and DBE, actually. Not only do they fill different niches, so neither is the "better" ship between the two, nor is the difference in looks achieved by modifying the exterior by doing such horrid things as slapping on needless extra bits (*cough* Imperial Eagle).

Most likely not, since it was a hasty reply to the criticism that the scout can't offer the explorer role it was promised to be.

But the scout, which was the initial model most likely did take more than 2 months.

And both ships ended up making at least someone happy, so it was quite a good job indeed.

I am eagerly awaiting the crooner classics:

That's a Moray
and
Mamba Number 5

^This^

I want a Mamba, kitted out for speed, and something in-game that actually takes advantage of the existence of a purpose-built racing ship. (just not one of those silly 'fly-through-the-rimgs' style race tracks, please.

Also, I have fond memories of turning so many Mamba-driving pirates into sparkly dust in the original Elite. It would be nice to be able to do that again.

wow, I'd hardly call 2/2 an upgrade in firepower over 1/4.

I would, especially if they are better positioned.

A large is easily worth two medium.

600 years ago, we were still killing each other with unrifled muskets and pikes.

Individual combat, and even warfare, looked pretty similar from the dawn of the neolithic revolution when people first started to really organize, until about this time.

No real reason there couldn't be another period of relatively slow advancement in the future. Especially with such strong taboo and laws against a significant factor that could drive further advances (strong AI and better computers).

The mere fact that the current dropship is so rarely seen in the hands of cmdrs is a good reason as any to update it.

I don't agree.

The Dropship and Orca were intended for modes of play we don't have yet. They don't need to be upgraded, they need their niche.

As I just said, it is not updated, but effectively replaced.

Which implies to me that the niche for the original won't be forthcoming any time soon.

Yes they do. Thas was mentioned before so they DO count. I am quite sure in this.

To me it really doesn't matter if they count or not, just get ships in and keep adding them, 1 ship a month is perfect, 1 every 2 weeks would be amazing, and that's totally doable for 1 artist, 1 modeller and 1 coder (even better if you have technical designer/artist for multi tasking it).

I figure this is kind of in the game lore seeing as the Eagle MK III was designed more than 20 years ago on an Amiga. The imperials added those bits and Frontier have done alright with the updated version that looks consistent yet still manages to fit in with the new designs.

Is lineage such a bad thing? Real world vehicles aren't always designed in a way that balances them out beautifully against every other product on the market. The game has history and not everything should feel like it was designed by one committee. That's my personal opinion. I'm quite happy to see the original Eagle variant back.
