Made Admiral yesterday 
...But I don't even know what the point is- I got a Drop Ship at Ensign, and then above that, nothing else..no perks.

I would expect no less than Admiral as a requirement for the Federal Corvette (and King, on the Imperial side, for the Cutter).
Prepare for the epic mission grind. 600+ missions done after Post Commander and I'm still just Post Captain.
