Newcomer / Intro Fed rep

In my experience, there is no set number of missions that will get you a reputation increase. If you want more rep, or want to get a rank mission, you should try to do as many missions for Fed aligned factions as you can (i.e. more than just courier missions), in 1-2 systems. Once you rank up to Allied with them, move on to some other Fed systems further away.

They are the red highlighted systems?

Yes, you can select what the colors in the Galaxy map should indicate (Government type, allegiance, etc.).

Each system has one principal allegiance. That is the one shown in the Galaxy map. However, this does not mean that there are no other factions active in that system. You can look at the factions active in the current system by checking the right-hand panel. You should always do this before accepting any missions so you know which of the system factions are aligned with the Federation - there is often more than one faction in a system that is aligned with the Feds. To build up reputation with the Feds, choose ONLY missions from those Fed-aligned factions. (You may choose missions from other factions too, but sometimes this will lead to rep loss with the Feds.)

The fact that there are always several factions in one system also means that you can find Fed-aligned factions in a system that does not show as Federal in the Galaxy map. Whether a system is shown as Federal in the map depends on whether the main station in a system is controlled by a Fed faction or not.

how long does it take to get federation rep if I do courier missions?

I found that I leveled my fed rep faster when I did slightly dodgy missions such as "collect black boxes from here or there" for fed allied factions and shot a few naughty pilots that had bounties in the Federation.

Never Done black box missions, I have 2 ships 1. A Hauler, 2. A Cobra

I use my Cobra in case I have the need for speed but you could use just about anything with fair cargo capacity.

They're simple enough to do. Just got to the system specified in the contract and have slow SC search of the system looking for WSS's. scoop them up with your cargo scoop and then just drop them back at the space station.
Its easiest to do these jobs from outposts and Anarchy systems as you are less likely to be scanned by a system authority vessels.
If the job is from a space port or a system crawling with authority vessels you will need to make sure carry a bit of speed on approach to the docking bay and if you hear "Scan Detected" put your foot down on entry to avoid them completing the scan and fining you for carrying elicit cargo.
It's actually quite exciting fun to do a bit of smuggling

Excuse my nubeness, what's WSS and SC mean?

more than welcome

stay away from SSS (Strong Signal Sources)... they contain some very strong enemies and should be avoided until you have a much better ship or are a member of a strong 3 -4 man Wing

what ships are good to own and what are best to avoid please?

just move a few hundred Ls away ... towards a planet if you like.... throttle to zero and wait

when a WSS appears point at it... target it ....and then exit SC

if you get bored just move off in any direction... throttle back to 0 ... rinse and repeat

is there an easy way to scan for WSS without scouting the enitre system?

All I do is .... After dropping in to the system, fly out from the central star a little way at high super cruise. drop the speed right down to absolute minimum. Then, turn around and fly back to the star. A WSS will show up within a a couple of mins, just lock on to it and drop out of SC when your ship tells you and there you are!

Had a very lucky escape when I checked out a SSS once, found FOUR VULTURES!! in ambush and escaped with an expensive repair bill but my life intact. Avoid!
