Federal Corvette... Maybe we've had it wrong all this time.

I came from star trek online, a scifi game that is slowly dying because the devs are taking the game in a poor direction but i digress. In sto i flew a dps tank in pvp. I was big, slow, and powerful. An unignorable force on the battlefield. It took more than one player to kill me while i could kill other players single handedly, a crusier with BURST. I didnt worry about chasing, my team knew to stick together. If the other team wanted kills to win, they had to come to US.

After moving to ED, I still want that playstyle and rushed for a big ship. I got the Anaconda but wasnt satisfied with its looks. It wasnt a bad looking or performing ship but i wanted a ship that looked awesome. I went after the cutter... Grinded it out, bought it, flew it and was disappointed. I cant strike fear into the hearts of the wicked in a ship i could barely turn! Even with FA off, combat in a cutter was like driving a bus, on ice, with your hand taped to the wheel...while trying to point your nose at a fly to kill it with a sneeze. Sure, the cutter is the best looking ship in the game and the fastest of the big three, but combat wasnt something it excelled at. The Anaconda moved better. So i decided to get the corvette.

After unlocking it, i was amazed at how well she moved and consider pvping in the ship. I looked for biuld ideas and tactics suitable to the corvette but it pailed in comparison to the mighty FDL. It turn isnt as great, it too slow... Its got less dps than the conda and is a worst tank to the cutter... I dispared...

WHAT DOES THIS BLOODY SHIP HAVE THAT OTHERS DONT?!

Then it hit me... No other ship can punch through armor like the corvette due to its two huge hardpoints. Ok. So THATS its ace. But how to leverage that? Its turning isnt as good or is as fast as the FDL and other medium ships... So chasing is out. It cant be a pure tank, other ships has it beat there too... But neither of these facts means it cant tank or cant fight...

Be we've been comparing the poor vette to things it cant possibly compete with. We've been judging a fish at how well it flies and deciding it a not so good ship because it cant do want other combat ships do.

Fellow commanders, we goofed.

The corvette IS that defending combat tank. She isnt the fast mover like the FDL. She isnt the pure tank like the cutter. The corvette is that big poweful brusier you send out to anchor a team. She is the ship that protects your support cutter with healy beams. She doesnt get lured out of position. The corvette holds the line. It says you go HERE and no further.

"But what about 1v1?!" Some of you might ask. The corvette should either be able to punch through armor enought to be too dangerous to remain around or the corvette should be too tanky to kill fast, giving the pilot more than enough time to high wake out.

The Federal Corvette is the big, poweful, slow moving, armor punching DPS tank. Not a fast mover like the FDL. Not a pure tank like the Cutter.

Ive seen threads asking FDEV for bigger hardpoints on the vette, trading the smalls for larges... This is going too far i think. I think turrets should have their damage buffed and their power useage increased so that the increase doesnt bother the larger ships but makes them too costly on a medium ship. Buts thats a thread for a different day.

If you want agile and big, there can be only one: The Beluga.

But it's neither a shield nor hull tank.

It packs a mean bite with 5 medium hardpoints, but is far from a war ship.

But it does maneuver like it was a medium ship, and in the right hands can be downright impressive.

I built one some years ago, wanting to take it on a tour around the galaxy, and I wanted it prepared for any contingency, so I put a nice selection of weapons on it, and as a goof took it out to a Haz Res for a combat trial. Turned out to be a better fighter than I could have expected. It became my mainstay for Combat CG's until the Exploration Upgrade of 3.3. Since then I've been off on the rim of the galaxy, but I still remember more than a few combat sorties flown in this beast.

With the OP, I do somewhat agree - the Corvette is an accomplished killing machine, but the Cutter can be too, as long as you know it steers like a block of soap on ice.

Then there's the Type-10. It's big, slow, bulky, hull-tanky, and turn in any direction worth a darn, but it is a good combat brick, for those who like combat bricks.

I just keep seeing people compare the corvette to the FDL and i think that that is the wrong thing to compare it to. It like comparing a porche to a F150 super duty and being mad at the f150 for not keeping up through a corner.

Is this the description for some NPC crew? If not, it should be. 😁

Actually i got my beluga up to 15k hull with reistances, 7k absolute, so yes, it is a hull tank

I'm laughing at another Cutter owner who never figured out how to fly it.With the right build and good pilot skills no other NPC ship in the game can defeat it. It gets more complicated with PvP but if they don't figure it out they are a target waiting to be destroyed. That is the balance of the game Frontier figured out.

True that; skill is the equalizing factor. I'm sure there are CMDRs who can make just about anything lethal in combat due to their skills and ingenuity.

I'm not great, but I'm loving my PvP Hauler build. I can last through a 10 minute skirmish and get out alive; I haven't been killed in it yet. Just trying to figure out how to give it more teeth... :)

I purchased a Vette lately and have been keeping it a secret from all but my squad, after reading your post now it's out. The thing I like about the Corvette is the way it flies and sounds. It is built with quality from stem to stern. Engineer it correctly and it is what it is suppost to be- the front line combat ship to support other ships like the FGS, FAS and FDS. This thing was built to take a beating while handing one out but the quality is like driving a Cadillac over a Mini- nothing compares.

She's not quite ready as far as engineering but will be very soon. I named her "Judgement Day" and on that day gankers prepare for your re-buy screen.
*That should bring them to me as you said lol

Glad you figured out a use for a 'vette. I enjoy both of mine, although not for the use you describe. To each their own...
