Federal drop ship "HELP!!! I need somebody.." ( Beatles voice)

I purchased a federal dropship with the moment from the previous cg. I ran a few missions but didn't have a real fight til today , it was me vs a viper the fight seemed to take a lot longer than usual ( I have a fully equipped cobra wit gimball multi cannons and beam laser) am I crazy what did I do wrong . What load out should I be using . I still don't get how to use shield cells and shield boost modules can someone please save me from myself

Also should I sell my cobra and only have one ship ? is it a waste to keep it stored someone? If I want to use it I always have a trip to come back ( it's in sol)

Mulit-cannons and beams should do well on almost any ship. Check that you're not exceeding your power plant, and if necessary upgrade it. Use Beams to take down shields, then Multis to rip the hull. Sometimes, running away is best if your shields are depleted. Use a shield booster or two to strengthen your shields, and shield cells to regenerate your sheilds, BEFORE they drop completely.

I have five ships, I don't sell any. Move your Cobra to a system near your home system, so you can use it occasionally. My ships are all in the same place, so if I want to mine, or smuggle, or bounty hunt, I can choose the ship for it.

Do I need to go turret or is gimball more than enough

Its only my opinion but gimball should be fine the turrets are mainly for the bigger ships. I haven't flown the drop ship ive avoided it because of its reputation for being quite sluggish to handle.
For combat I went cobra, viper, vulture.,fas .I am now mucking around trying to find my next ship .
See you in the black.

I don't own a dropship, so I can't say how the weapons react on it. On my Clipper I need turret cannons, gimbals don't do what I want. Try gimbals, go to a Nav Beacon and try them out, then if you don't like how they work, get turrets and try them. Each ship varies and you need to outfit them accordingly.

I fly a dropship and my advice is either run 5 gimballed pulse or 2 gimballed beams on the side and either 3 multicannons or run 3 cannons and boost at them and snipe subsystems at close range for npcs. Run 3 scbs each on their own fire group and you will survive most enemies

Heh, you're running into the same issues as I am right now with my Python... you've gone from a small, relatively-quick and maneuverable ship to a large, relatively-slow-moving tank. The combat style will be completely different. I also recommend gimballed weapons, either lasers for BH or reloadables for everything else/to pack a punch.

As far as flying/combat style, I'm in the same boat as you. It's part of the reason all of these heavy ships seem to end up in my space garage after awhile, I just can't get used to combat in anything larger than a Vulture (yet). And, yes, keep ships that you like, because one day you'll realize that you've got about a dozen nice choices, and they're all fun in their own way.

Retrain your brain first, FDS is an armor tanker so don't run till at least 75% armor, 50%-60% once you're comfy in it. Second it's nickname is the Federal Driftship for a reason, go learn to master the drifting as well as boost turning to get the most out of it. 1 C3 beam laser and 4 class 2 Multi Cannon's is the best FDS loadout. Second SCb's on it are next to useless because the shield's are weak as an armor tank ship, you'll just be constantly spamming them. And last but certainly not least, it's a combat transporter but if you want to just fight in it BUFF THE ARMOR NOT THE SHIELD'S! D rated Hull reinforcement's and millitary bulkhead's.

Buy a Gunship or FAS. ;)

I want the gunship or assault ship but I'm only a petty officer and having trouble ranking up
It's worth the effort needed in my opinion. I fly the Gunship, and it is amazing. Learning to fly the FDS will help you learn to not run just because shield's go down, I've flown my Gunship home with 30% hull before and that's with the basic bulkhead's and two D2 & one D5 Hull Reinforcement's.

Bit gutted I didnt pick up the gunship while ed was still in the gpp I got my FAS then and prefer it over the python any day of the week.I've got a courier and a clipper stuck over the other side of the bubble that I am going to taxi over in the next few days...well the clipper anyway reckon the courier ill just sell and rebuy it doesn't seem worth the hassle for a 2 mill ship.I got them both from li yong rui for the 20% discount and am now with the empire not the feds...sorry to veer off topic its just on my mind because I can't be bothered with the trek.
Good advice as allways stealth, op listen to this guy he's one of the good uns ☺

I'll always help debunk the myth's & misconception's surrounding my beloved Federal Dropship line. :D Plus I just like helping out in general, I had to learn all this FDS-FAS-FGS info the hard way as most just look at their on paper stat's then instantly bash them without seeing what advantage's they had(and every ship in ED has it's own advantage of some kind). The FDS is a drifter and that is a very useful trait if mastered, the FAs is a heavy armored(and the armor tend's to protect sub-system's better) Asp with the Vulture's combat abillity but without the drifting issue the Asp has, & the FGS has amazingly responsive thruster's for it's weight which allow it to stop & go better than you'd expect and it can fight good against NPC Python's and Conda's with 0 pip's to engine's, then it can handle medium ship's with 2 pip's and use of FA-Off, but small craft will easilly out fly you as this was glaringly not designed to fight the smaller craft and as with the FAs the armor work's great though not quite as good at blocking sub system damage with the lightweight alloy(can't upgrade yet).
