Federal Fighter Hatred

Its one thing to make the NPC borderline brain dead and fearless in the game of chicken, but making them invincible during a collision? Why do i lose half/All my shields when they plow into me without being harmed themselves?

Idk, i guess the idiot Ai boosted at the last second but i honestly didnt feel like it was going to OHK me with max Pips to Sys. Whatever, its not like i had 4 hours worth of Vouchers disappear.... ohwait, i did.

Which leads to another issue.... why do vouchers disappear when your ship explodes. I know we dont have escape pods implemented.... but until then it makes no sense to lose the Vouchers considering they are not a physical thing.

Maybe i should spend even more hours trading! That sounds like tons of FUN....not.

This has been problem for a while already.

Whether this is intentional or not, it is still not clear or at least, I am unsure. But many people have been making this issue known. For now, just try to be more careful is all I can say for now.

I, too, have died a few times for the same reason. :D

Since I started not playing chicken with the Fed fighters, I haven't had a direct ram. (I have had a glancing blow, which barely touched my shields.)

It takes two pilots failing to dodge to make a collision.

I found rams were more prevalent when I pulled away in the same direction as the fed fighter. Consider pulling away slightly earlier, or rotating 90 degrees, so when you pull away you're going to the fighters left or right.

Im not testing this game until they fix this issue.

I was just killed again while counting my Vouchers contemplating going back. I was sitting completely still and the idiotic pos Ai doesnt even attempt to slow down. This is the only time ive ever been legitimately irritated at ED.

I can sit on the other side of the Capital ship while 5 Fed Fighters go balls to the wall trying to get to me but instead they plaster themselves along the Cap.

Why is it only the Fed Fighters with this behavior? Eranin Sidewinders just get stuck against the capital every now and then.... but they dont smear themselves across it, or against players.

Haha.. Yeah, true.. That only shows that I still have plenty to learn.

Fed fighters have to be the easiest targets in the game. Don't go full steam ahead, stay slow, let them do their fancy little boosts and turns. Then shoot em up from a distance at your leisure. There is no need to be closer than 2km from them unless you are using cannons or rail guns. Pulse or burst lasers will take them out pretty quick from 2km. Just watch them and as they do their boost, they generally go in a straight line for quite a ways, giving you a nice broadside shot. I've killed hundreds of em without a single collision.

Whoa! That make me feel so inferior! :p Haha.

Guess I will give that a try. :D Thanks

Op has a point though. Getting rammed by a ship with 20percent hull while you still have full shields shouldnt result in you losing your ship.

This problem has been around since the start of Beta 1. I would simply avoid the federation distress signal for now, although I've noticed the EDF ships don't seem to have the same bug, although they are much harder to kill. If you want to practice combat I would recommend pirate hunting in the Dahan system, there is a lot of them around and the AI's aren't particularly good in that system.

I had this same problem until I learned to use my thrusters. As soon as you see they are coming right at you just strafe in any direction and just keep shooting them while you strafe. Haven't had a single collision since I started doing that.

Note: Just to be clear, by thrusters I don't mean yaw. I mean whatever you have left/right/up/down bound to.

Strafing definitely helps, so does shooting from behind. It's just practice.

As for the vouchers going when you die, it is part of the game - you can't keep your goods if you're a trader and die, so why should you keep your vouchers if you bounty hunt and die.

It seems quite sensible to reward success as opposed to failure (ie dying)...

When a mass of lets say 10 tons is ramming you with speeds upwards of 500kph, what do you think would be the outcome?

One of the devs have explained this issue:

Hello Commanders!

Good spot!

What's likely happened here is that in preparation for getting correct mass for ships and modules etc. so that frame shifting and flight model can be affected by loadout, ships have overall gained weight.

And because our collisions use mass and speed to determine damage... Things just got a little more dangerous.

We'll no doubt be tweaking various values to get collision damage in a place we're all happy with, but for now, I'm afraid we'll all have to be a little more cautious.

And also, those pesky Federal Fighters! There's a bug in the AI that basically allows ships to keep aiming at their target even when trying to thrust out of the way. The end result is a decidedly more suicidal fighter pilot (their ships are very manoeuvrable - other ships exhibit the issue to a lesser degree).

The good news here is that we can definitely fix this issue!

Well if it's hull against hull then yea you can use real life logic. But factor in non existent space ship shielding... most of the logic goes out the window at that point. The enemies are moving at meters per hour iirc.

The fed fighters don't even receive damage anyways unless they run into something that isn't a player.

You can avoid them but after an extended playthrough in the distress signal, it's going to happen and there is nothing you can do. The fed fighters can turn very sharp very fast, they just don't use that skill for anything else but ramming.

meters per second, so top speed on a Sidewinder (220 m/s) is roughly 792 km/h, or close to 500 mph.

I'm really not surprised that collisions are catastrophic to both parties if they're not glancing.

And the shields are probably designed to stop energy weapons and small high speed projectiles, not massive lumps of heavy metal ploughing in to them.

It doesn't seem to present on every collision though I rammed a pirate Sidewinder earlier and escaped with 66% hull remaining. He popped, but his shields were down and he'd taken heavy damage. If it had been a Fed fighter I'm sure that it would have been me that popped.

How many pips did you have to system (sheilds) during the collision? I'm guessing the fed fighter had 4.
