Federal Gunship and 2.2

btw i hit the limit of the ability of the FGS last night (or probably more accurately the limit of my ability)

i foolishly, impatiently dropped into high intensity CZ without waiting for shields to recharge. i only needed 1 more "kill" for a mission with some nice mats and cargo.

i did this with only 1 ring of shields (i dont use SCBs in my FGS build) with a plan to steal a kill. sadly on picking my side almost all we enemy and i had 5 on me right away.

despite heavily modified armour, shield boosters, shields and level 3 dirty drives, the "fight" was all over before i could run or charge hyperspace and had me visiting my 1st rebuy in some months.

the loss of 3 mil or so of bounty vouchers, 2 mil or so of exploration was matched only by my loss of 25 tons of ENG commodities.

on the bright side it meant i could swap into my vulture and put a small cargo hold in it :).
The gunship isn't really capable of having truly "heavy" armour, in the sense of "I can sit here and tank for a bit with my armour". It doesn't have enough internal space for the requisite HRPs, and it's base armour is nowhere near strong enough to compensate for both the lost integrity, and lost resistances, of not having HRPs.

I have to admit, I was a bit wary of trying the FGS when 2.2 dropped, but I thought i'd give it a go and if it didn't work then I'd go back to a FDL or Python...

Well, I love it. Seriously, the Ship Launched Fighter is what my combat style has been waiting for!

I launch the SLF, and send it to attack my target, then, once distracted, I strafe the shields down with 2 x class 2 beams, then switch to guns! Great fun and can be used for Haz Res, Comp Nav Beacons, or Assassination missions...

However, my only deaths have come from Combat Zones, where for some reason, I can't manage to survive!!!

I also have 2 x Class1 Missiles (i like them, even before there buff) for stripping modules - they are great for drives too!

Loving it!

Oh dear, you just added a significant amount of tension to all forthcoming fights.

Yes! I actually think it's a good thing, you feel properly bereft when your cherished buddy gets iced. Emotional investment. But most people here disagree with me, so...

Agreed, otherwise everyone will be flying with elite crew - this way means their is value to being a little bit more cautions.
