Federal Gunship or 4A PA on my FDL?

Yup - it’s that random ... been grinding Fed Rank / Credits to get a Corvette but still sitting at Warrant Officer so a ways to go ... getting a bit bored so thinking of mixing things up a bit. Figure credits will have sorted themselves out by the time I actually get to Rear Admiral so spending a bit on a “side project” won’t be an issue. Already have an FDL and have just unlocked the Fed Gunship ...

So, to stem of the boredom, should I:

(a) Buy a 4A Plasma Accelerator for my FDL and go learn how to use it?

OR

(b) Buy a Federal Gunship and drop the engineered parts from my Python onto it?

Both would be for some arbitrary RES hunting before returning to the Python to get back to the grind!

Thoughts? :)

Depends whether you prefer hull or shield tanking, really. The FDL also has a few quirks that give it a more niche appeal: the offset cockpit and the terrible jump range (even after engineering). I believe the FDL is also more suited to jousting-style combat whereas the Gunship shines with a short-range, FAO style.

Oh, I’m definitely more into Shields than Hull: my FDL is (almost!) fully engineered up and I love it but the jump range is pretty abysmal. Running a 4A MultiCannon on it at the moment but feel like the big PA might be more “fun” provided I can hit with it ...

Gunship would most likely be a “try it then sell it” bit of fun only. I have some engineered parts on my Python I could use to get it up to some decent shields, though, so it might surprise me ... but mainly I just unlocked it: it’s a (potential) new toy!

Don't bother trying to add shield strength to an FGS.
Run biweaves and add reactive armor and HRPs.

Both of them need considerable engineering to shine.
FGS is a beast of a ship.
Don't underestimate it.

They each rely on dramatically different flying styles/techniques, so it's kind of a preference thing. You really need to outfit and fly them both to decide which is more your style. I bought a Gunship recently on the advice of a friend who has one that is absolutely devastating in PvP and am loving it so far. The ability to have an SLF is so much fun, and pound for pound it has the most firepower by a decent margin. With that said, it's really slow and difficult to get the nose around on a speedyboi FdL sperg boosting past you, so it takes a LOT of practice.

Side note combat aside , for fed rank I used hip 50506 to hip 50660, it’s a little area surrounding it as well all pretty good for fed rep

Yeh - I’d run BiWeaves on the Gunship. Actually, I run BiWeaves on the FDL already but they’re 1054MJ Thermal Resistant BiWeaves ... :)

The different styles thing makes a lot of sense. I only play PvE but I’m not the greatest pilot hence why I gravitated towards the FDL and it’s “super shields” to allow me to take a lot of hits. I would much prefer a centre mounted flying position and a bit more flexibility which the Gunship might offer but on paper it’s not reall much different to my Python for agility and firepower ... but we all know stats go out the window once you actually fly something! I’ve got some 6A G3 Dirty Drive Thrusters to speed things up a bit and some 6C Thermal Resist Bi Weaves along with an engineered FSD and beam lasers which would all drop in ... would just be a real disappointment if I didn’t gel with it ... tried the Chieftan twice and had that experience although I didn’t have engineered components then.

Didn’t get on tonight but might give it a go tomorrow - it’s only a 3 million loss if I hate it, right? That’s one decent trade mission in my Python ...

Hmmm ... that's almost 200 LY from me and I don't have a system map for them. I've been based out of V374 Pegasi for a while now and am Allied with all the factions. I can usually pick up a delivery mission for 120-180 tons of cargo paying our between 2 - 5 million but there's a huge variety of destinations so mission stacking to a single system is tricky.

I use both for RES hunting. Both are very strong once fully engineered, but in different ways. The FdL is a better match for my dogfighting style and with it I do pretty well in CZs and RES's alike.

However, the FGS is the kind of ship that makes you laugh hysterically - fill it with HRPs, load out those seven hardpoints and drive it like a slow moving tank. Do you know how fast things blow up when you hose them with seven multicannons? And have you seen an NPC pilot a ship with SEVEN RAILGUNS?

I'm going to try seven plasma accelerators next - I'm not sure how effective it will be, but it will surely be funny as hell. :)

Isn't the heat an issue with seven railguns...? I mean, I use four on my corvette (two small, two medium), and boy, I'm happy I've got that huge fixed beam laser with thermal vent. Keeps me nice and cool. Otherwise -- one CMDR, well done (as in, fried...) :D

That does sound fun ... mind you, if I'm flying, nothing dies quickly from 7 railguns as 6 railguns would miss ... :)

All the rails are Sturdy Mount (-30% thermal load) with either feedback cascade or super penetrator secondaries (a further -40% thermal load), so heat isn't an issue. Even without the Sturdy Mount, the heat levels were still manageable (for a human at least).

Fun, but short lived sadly. It's more of a fun, mucking-around kind of ship than something that you'd spend two hours in a CZ in. :p

Sooo ... turns out I’ve REALLY pushed what you can run on an FDL with a G1 Low Emission PP ... with 6 engineered Shield boosters and 4 beam lasers I didn’t have a chance of getting the PA powered up! I guess I could have used less boosters / disables a couple of lasers but where’s the fun in that?! Need to re-engineer the PP or go better than G3 Efficient on the beams ...

Anyhoo ... embraced “The Grind” and took my Python out to Ceos/Sothis ... over the course of maybe 8 hours play have moved the needle from Ensign (20%) to Post Captain (54%) ... so close! Actually might not have enough credits when I get Vice Admiral at this rate (215 million but only made 15 during that rank up) so there is still much to do!!
