Ships Federal Gunship Owner's Thread

I wanted to create a thread for the Federal Gunship. I find this is an incredibly underrated ship, especially when you consider she'll be flying with fighter escort come 2.2

She's a very slow, sluggish, beautiful tank with disgusting firepower. And she's mine! :D

Please only post in here if you fly one and love it!

EDIT: Requested sales pitch:

- She's ridiculously good looking. Like the space shuttle got intimate with a tank.
- *7 weapon hardpoints!*. Basically, the more weapon hardpoints you have, the more efficient your weapon setup. My own setup has three beams lasers and four multicannons, and with four pips in weapons, I can fire ALL of them for an impressive amount of time. Even large ships like Anacondas melt under it's brutal firepower. It's also the cheapest ship with a class 7 power distributor. I kill ships when bounty hunting really really quickly.
- Did I mention she's a tank? Very high base armor and she can take a hell of a beating. I regularly go to toe to toe with Anacondas in High RES and barely get scratched. And I'm still using reinforced alloys as of this writing, lol.
- While she's not at all a good ship to solo PVP with, she can act as gunship support when winged up. And 7 hardpoints = up to 7 railguns with fairly good convergence. Or, you know, up to 7 torpedo launchers. It's really in the opposing wing's best interest to target this ship first.
- Did I mention the fighter bay? She is currently only one of two lower end ships with a fighter bay, the other being the Keelback. She already has frightening firepower ... and will have *even more* firepower once she can launch fighters. As of this writing, we don't yet know how launchable fighters will be implemented, but it will obviously be better than not having launchable fighters at all.
- CRAZY maneuverable in supercruise. Like absolutely insane. Probably the most agile supercruise ship in the game, and hence the best ship for dealing with interdictions. If you've flown this ship, you know what I mean. ***LATER EDIT: SADLY NO LONGER THE CASE :( ***
- Her hardpoint placement and number make her probably the best ground assault ship in the game.

I've never really understood the FGS, slower, less maneuverable and more expensive than the FAS but it's never been clear why.. However, I've never tried her so come on let's hear the sales pitch :)

the thing i really don't understand with the FGS is the jump range, why is it so bad ?

It's the Federal curse. The only Fed ship with an 'OK' jump range (barely) is the FAS at around 14 or 15LY fully loaded. All the other ships jump between 11 and 13. That being said, all the dedicated combat ships have poor jump ranges, including the Vulture and FdL.

:D

Not enough people understand this. Not enough people find this terrifying. From the seat of my courier I look at the FGS with lust. And envy. And then a bit of shame.

I also love the Gunship but it does have a few problems. It is no good in a full wing fight, it gets focused and doesn't have enough internals to either SCB tank or hull tank. But in small wings of 2 it is great fun.

I've posted this before, but just in case you missed it this was my testing. I started with 1 large canon and all the rest fixed mulitis, then changed to 1 large plasma and all the rest fixed multis. A loadout I would recommend:

I fly and love the Gunship! It's Class 7 distributor (FDS/FAS have Class 6) is great as well.

It is ridiculously nimble in Supercruise, I dread to think that this could be patched out because it's awesome at the moment. I just overshoot the destination all the time and am able to immediately swing 180 like some sort of bug flying back and forth.

I really want some paint jobs for it now, come on FDev I literally have cash in the bank to give to you for FGS paint jobs!

I an flying the dropship at this time. Its firepower is awesome, but adding two more even small will help. The gunship will proabaly be next when i get the rank, petty officer now. Till i heard about the figther the python was next inline . I have a a rated dropship . Can you post your build? Should very close to drop ship

Yeah, sure. This is what I'm using at the moment. I'll be upgrading to MGC as soon as I have built up an insurance buffer:

Exept for life suport interanls are same as mine. Gun little diffrnt. I got a chaff lancher a point defence in utilies same sheild diffently better setup then drop ship

Honestly, regardless of the build you get, you REALLY want to have a 7A Power Distributor. It's the entire reason for flying this ship. Otherwise, flying with a 7C is close to the same as flying with a 6A, at which point you may as well fly the FAS. I also personally recommend getting your thursters as close to A as possible. The Gunship is slow and sluggish. It needs the most here it can get.

Just made Ensign, so will be buying one soon. :)

Right now I'm saving up for an A8 shield for my Cutter, which costs more than an A-Rated FGS!

Got one and love it. Sure it's the slowest medium ships in terms of cruising and boosting, it's higher thrusters and power distributor (only equalled by the Python) allows it to constantly boost at 3 pips. Even at 2.5 pips it you can get at least 8 boosts out of a full cap. With this in mind, an FA off boost turn will keep you on any target.

It's greatest value is obviously it's weaponry. If you are wielding multi cannons this allows most energy to remain in shields and engines giving you more agility through constant boosting and durability for the relatively small shields (I use both A & Bi weave builds depending on weapon load out energy requirements).

Considering the difference between the FAS and the Python in maneuverability and as the turn circle is faster than the pythons when they are in the blue, I wholeheartedly disagree with the 2/10 score and would give it a 6/10. It's ability to boost turn so quickly with FA off is great fun and takes practise but learning it is worth it.

As previously mentioned Supercruise is amazing in the FGS second to none (I've flown in wings with every ship type in game and nothing comes close to its turn circle). With that in mind, it has been reported as a bug. Whether this advantage is on purpose or not, I do expect it to change.

The interdiction minigame is admittedly difficult at first but with practise you can become king. The added agility requires smaller movements but it also allows you to keep up with a fast moving reticule with ease.

Can't wait for fighter bays. Going to be amazing.

For ground assaults, 7 rocket pods (dumbfire) are superb and it's agility in Gravity is not as adversely effected considering its mass (thanks no doubt to the 7 power distributor).

I was out interdicting this evening with a wing and I challenged a vulture pilot to a duel - of sorts. The idea was simply to keep our guns in possition at all times.
I have to say that with the boost turn, I had little to no difficulty in keeping the vulture in my sights as he tried to out turn me.

This ship is awesome!

Hey I've been flying my FGS a long time and it by far my favourite ship. However different to most people I use it mostly as my PVP ship. Why you may ask? I'll tell you.

1. Tackiness - The 1.5 buff to large shield banks has directly buffed the gunship, a 6A bank combined with a 5B bank can tank a whole wings focus now(2 banks needed especially against rail wings). it doesn't even matter that the base shields are low when you got so much regen.

2. Firepower- It's the only sub large ship apart from the python which can run a full shield build and also 5 rails, which combined with the 7a distributor means you can burst down large ships while also double banking. (to use 5 rails while 4 pips to shield gotta use 4 heat sinks)

if that doesn't show you how good this pvp ship is consider it's nearly half the price of a python O.O

Here's my build PVP build enjoy ;)
