Federal Gunship: What a beast!

I have just added a FGS to my fleet and was considering outfitting it as a dedicated ground attack vessel. I have been using an A rated Asp missile tank, but considering the changes coming in 2.1 I thought it best to look for an alternative, but before I outfit it as a ground attack ship, I decided to take it for a spin in a High RES. She is fully A rated with military grade hull, A6 shields, A5 SCB, 1 x large and 2 x medium pulse lasers and 2 x medium and 2 x small multi cannons.
The damage this ship can rain down on others is very impressive. I had on problem dispatching all the ships I encountered, including several Elite NPC Anaconda.
I spent over two hours in the High RES only returning to port to re-arm.
I finished the night 7.5m up with ON HULL DAMAGE.
If you haven't flown this ship before, I would highly recommend giving it a go.
Just so you know, my usual go to bounty hunter is an A rated FDL (click on signature).

Any thoughts on a FGS load out for ground attack would be appreciated.

I have my eye on a Huge Turret Laser on the bottom of an FDL for 2.1. Bases dont use chaff, and the hard point position underneath the FDL would allow you to just fly around and let the turret do the work.
But then I am lazy.

Did you saw a Vindicator Jones' videos? He uses 5 x medium missile racks and 2 x fixed small beam lasers. Missiles for sniping out Planetary Turrets, and small beams for sniping out single skimmers. He also fitted 4 x point defence weapons for defending against rockets.
 

Hey VJ, just wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for that video. Getting a FGS and trying out your ground assault tactic has been on my wishlist for months. Eventually got the ship last week ..

.. finally got to try out some ground assault. Started out at Fernandes Depot++ (HIP 10716) which was great (apart from losing a parked ship when another commander seemingly reset the instance and caused all hell to break loose) and have now moved to Metcalf Keep+++ (Cubeo) which is a bit more challenging but REALLY good fun :D
 
2.1 is going to drastically alter dumbfire viability for ground assaults. Not only do they lose their splash damage (and skimmers/sentries/goliaths get a bonus to resisting them), but they're adding in lots of PD to bases.

The upside is, fixed C3 cannons on a Python work brilliantly. :)
 
Its the next Ship I wanna buy, my plan is to fit it for Conflict Zones and have a bit of fun. Not exactly sure how I will fit it, there are so many Hardpoints that its hard to decide :D
 
Slow-boat with lacking defense but a lot of offensive capabilities due to hardpoints...
Needs more speed, a red or pirate paintjob and additional engine sections. :D

Seriously, it is great looking and has spirit, but the speed is a total no-go.
If you compare it to the cheaper and lower rank Fed Dropship,
you see it just lacks defensive capabilities, which are not at all compensated by 2x small hps.

The gunship is such a fun ship for raw fire power, i love taking it into combatzones and hazres. I'd suggest plasma accelerators on it as it handles the heat and power really well.

I agree with julio though it badly needs some more speed and maneveurability to make it truely competitive. Personally i think the flight models of all three fed ships should be much closer (nerf assault buff gunship) but with FAS retaining its speed.

Oh yes and it needs a pirate paint job so badly.

Moonlighting as a Fed to gain access to their ships is still on my bucket list. I've moonlighted as an Imperial many times and have to say loved it.

I've also never taken on any ground missions beyond deliveries. This has inspired my to give then a go.

I spent last night playing about with the load out for a post 2.1 FGS ground attack and this is what I came up with.

I tried it out with A6+A2 SCBs but the jump range was appalling. Even with this setup I am looking at 13 jumps to get to Cubeo, hence the fuel scoop qnd advanced scanner.
I will have 4 fire groups set
1: pulse lasers
2: multi cannons
3: lasers and cannons
4: dumdfire missiles
As I said this is for 2.1 which as you know will include fighter support and improved ground defence.

Will head to Cubeo tonight and give this load out a try.

Any thoughts/feedback would be appreciated.
