Federal Navy Strike Contract?

This is probably another of those stupid questions....

Is a "Federal Navy Strike Contract" part of the rank-up procedure?

I was just chatting to somebody who's "stuck" and says they can't find a Fed' naval promotion mission.

From memory (it's been a while since I finished doing the naval stuff), all the promotion missions were pretty obvious.
Even if the mission title didn't make it clear that it was a rank-up mission, there was (IIRC) ALWAYS something in the text which made it obvious it was a naval promotion mission.
I don't recall ever struggling to figure out whether a particular mission was for a promotion or not.
I don't recall having to take a "Federal Navy Strike Contract" in order to rank-up either (but I might have just forgotten it).

Yeah it is now, see also Imperial Navy Strike missions. You know it's a ranking mission because it tells you the rank gained in the blurb. I think they used to call them Navy Ascension missions or something.
Only problem is that now I'm ONLY seeing Strike missions, where you have to kill x number of pirates. The other mission types seem to have disappeared, unless I'm just being unlucky.

Hmmm....

This is a bit awkward.

I was docked at the same station as the other person and I could see "Federal Navy Strike Contracts" as being available but when I looked at them there wasn't anything which hinted that they might be rank-up missions.
Trouble is, of course, that if I'm already an Admiral then I guess the game is going to redact that part of the text so I won't see it even if it's there for him.

Anyway, if we're saying that they ARE rank-up missions then I'll tell him to take one and we'll see how it goes.
Might even be fun to tag along and help kill pirates or whatever.

You know it's a rank-up mission if the word "Navy" is anywhere in the title. Currently they are bugged(?) so that *only* strike contract Navy missions appear for rank-up.

Yep, Im just going to wait it out until its fixed or take one that has only a few targets because I am weary of how long it might take to find them. Ive been offered some nice credits for the Navy mission but with like between 28-40 targets. I was offered one with 3 targets once but couldnt take it because it was at a station that I had no standing with the factions.

Any time you see a mission with the words "NAVY" or "NAVAL" in the mission title, it will be a RANK-up mission. If unsure, check your RANK progression in the systems panel. If your RANK progression is at 100% it is a RANK-up mission. I am unsure if this is as intended or a bug but my last RANK-up mission was offered a few days ago during the Rhea/LQ Hydrae boom. Since I was busy earning I declined the first several offers and found that each time I declined the mission, the next time the mission was offered there were fewer targets to destroy, i.e.: the first offer was to destroy 28 enemy ships, the second offer was to destroy 24 ships, then 20, then 16, then 12, etc. When I finally accepted the NAVAL strike mission it only wanted me to destroy 6 ships. As I said I do not know if this is as intended but it would be interesting if some other CMDRs would test this and report back. The missions do get offered over and over however will only be offered by factions the CMDR is cordial, friendly or allied with and I was running a bunch of missions from the same station. o7

FWIW, I'm told that the important information is somewhere down at the bottom of all the "blurb", in among all the stuff that tells you about material and rep' rewards.
Apparently there's a line that says something like "additional rewards: Naval rank increase"

Anyway, he took a mission in LHS 20 and we just went to the LHS 20 nav' beacon and spent about half an hour blasting outlaws there.
Most of 'em were Eagles and Adders so the hardest part was not destroying them before he got a chance to fire on them.
Maybe I should've used a smaller ship than my Corvette? :p

Was quite good fun though.[up]
