Federal ships start firing at me when I attack a bounty target

When ever I'm at a nav beacon and want to attack a bounty target, federal ships start to fire at me as if I committed a crime.

What's going wrong here?

You shot someone in the same faction as the Feds. Jump to SC, jump back to Nav beacon.

Known "issue" - some think working as intended, some think due a change soon.

I've found that when the 'wanted' target is the same faction as the system security, sometimes this happens - I think that there's some flaws in the faction loyalty code. The devs have said this is on their prioty list to look into as soon as they're back from their holiday vacations, so i should be repaired in the near future.

In the meantime, just avoid attacking wanteds who are the same faction as the dominant system faction and you should be fine.

You may need to check what local faction he might be allied to through the contacts panel after basic scanning them. Someone might have a bounty but also be friendly in the system you find them. If they happen to be friendly with a major faction in local space they'll likely be protected by security forces should you engage them first.

What weapons are you using? Are you using warrant scanner? when you attack are there any other shipd close to the ones you are attacking?

Sometimes they are outlined red and I attacked a ship before the scanner was finished. Even though the ship was wanted, the feds shot at me anyway.

I wouldn't have known the target had a bounty if I didn't wait for the scan to complete.

I have been hit with the same thing, but I was using Turrents on my ship. If this was the case with you, change your settings to On Target only and it should not happen again

Remember if you are hit by a cop ship by mistake your weapons will attack the cops. if you have it set for target only it gives you a chance to ignore cops fire.

Happens to me all the time. It's silly if it's working as intended... just an annoying game mechanic. The fact you can warp in and out in about 10 seconds and it goes away makes me think bug.

you will find that you have wanted on your name is you attack cops.

I have it loads of times, but I have also had cops help me kill 50+k bounties even though I attacked the wanted npc so it does work both ways

So, I've pretty much figured it out.

If the bounty is in a federal system and the person with the bounty is allied with the feds (Bhothos, for example) the feds will attack you if you attack them first simply because they see you firing at someone allied with them. The feds don't scan you or your target, and they just assume you're the bad guy.

I really hope this is fixed soon.

Or you could wait until the local security scans them and finds out they're wanted and opens fire on them. Once the firing has started, they are happy to have you on their side. Also, make sure you're not accidentally firing on a security vessel. Sometimes errant blasts will hit one of them. I've done it.

I got interdicted and shot at once, in a federation system. I simply returned fire and got fined.

Well, this is somehow how it works in the Netherlands. :D
