Federal what - Dropship, Assault Ship or Gunship?

o7 CMDRS,

I'm finalizing my fleet, alredy own most of what I wanted. Two more ships left (Cutter being the last one) and I'm thinking about adding something Federal to my collection. I already have Corvette, been thinking about something smaller. I have never owned anything Federal, frankly, I skipped all of them due to their ugly rick looks. Now, having one free spot left I want one of those ugly bricks. Case is - can't decide which one.

I've done some reading and I'm leaning toward Gunship. FAS looks like slightly upgraded FDS but I like the hull tanking idea of Gunship. Plus those 7 hardpoints and SLF. Some serious dakka dakka.

I intend to use it as a bounty hunting ship (along with Vulture, FDL and Corvette), eventually as a trap ship - get some gold or platinum and allow to interdict myself. That should be fun as I always was winning the interdiction game. So - a question for all of you Federal users: how would you sell me one of these?

There's a reason they call the FGS the Funship. When your combat skills reach high levels, the FAS is also very rewarding, but has been made somewhat obsolete due to low initial shield values. It makes just as good a hull tank as gunship, if not better because the fgs handles a biweave so well, it would be silly not to put one on it. The FAS is hard to hit face on, it's very fast and has superb laterals. The up and down (and only 2 med 2 large) hardpoints are the biggest issue with it. All the fed ships are great. Even the driftship. :)

Just look at those lines Eagle 1, FGS- just sexy.

I have both ;)

FAS seems to me too much specialized on combat
Dropship and Gunship can successfully multi-role - they can even do nice on cargo missions.
Gunship has the advantage of the weapon loadout and the SLF

My take on them is that FGS is somewhat redundant if you already have the Corvette, but perhaps you will give them more specialized roles. Dropship is the most multi-role. I used it as a miner way back. FAS is a fast hulltank fighting ship with pretty good hardpoints. If I had a slot in my fleet, I might consider getting one.

Nice ships War Eagle, but they should be black... ;)

The ship I enjoy staring at the most in this game is the FGS. It has the best lines, flows beautifully from front to rear and perfectly combines classic proportions with purpose and aggression. It's hard to say it's 'beautiful', but it's amazingly 'good looking'.

I have a FAS myself and absolutely LOVE it, I've hull tanked for so long when I finally swapped out my barely used/new python for a mamba and started flying that around I was so taken aback by having to actually worry about shields!

Now working towards getting the rank to get my own FGS, thinking about swapping out my FAS for the GS, mostly so when I multicrew with viewers they get a fighter to play in instead of just turrets.

I really like the way it flies - just smooth as silk. Almost all of my ships are white :D

It seems my initial preference is somewhat confirmed, Gunship from all those three. Case of being redundant with Corvette present - Corvette is planned as final goal: big, lazy ship where I can just sit and observe how things explode. Until then (and till my combat rank goes beyond current mostly harmless, duh) I want something more pro-active. For pure beginner I have Vulture. Target medium size is FDL. As a side step I plan on using Chieftain and something Federal. Variety is good.

Ok, decision is made. I'm going after Gunship.

Variety is the spice of life ;)

Make sure to let us know how she flies compared to your others, I think it is soooo smoooth.

For bounty farming, it has to be the FAS. The gunship is too slow and its fighter will rob you 10% or more of your bounties and 50% of your combat ranking points.

It's definitely debatable. The better the pilot the smaller the difference in combat effectiveness between the two. Being good in the FAS is about staying close to your target and unloading full dps until its dead, the maneuverability gives you that, something you won't be able to do as often or consistently in an fgs due to its speed and pitch deficits. Same reason I take a frag Krait to czs instead of a Corvette. The Corvette can't take out hard targets sufficiently faster than the Krait to justify its far longer time spent acquiring and reaching the next target.

The FGS is effectively a semi mobile gun turret. :D Fighters are a liability. Don't use them. :p

I couldn't choose. The FAS came first for me and is a good thargoid hunter. I've got it kitted out for that task. The FGS kept tempting me though as there's something about it. I kept scratching the itch with a Challenger for a while as it has similar hardpoints and beats it in some stats, but I eventually came back to the FGS again. I'm currently trying to talk myself into engineering it.
