Federation naval rank up mission bugged?

So I just spent the last two plus hours trying to get the mission done and I've given up for the night.

Mission told me to head to a nearby system to hunt down a named imperial npc ship. I've entered maybe twenty plus uss and not one has this named ship.

Relogged tried searching it in supercruise but couldn't find it. Any of you have this issue and know what I am missing maybe?

Got another thirty hours to finish this mission so I'd like to figure out how to complete it. Otherwise I'll take a huge hit to rep I suspect.

Any ideas? Cheers lads.

If its the mission I think it is. You need to fly close to one of the spawned ships and they tell you that the ship you are hunting has moved to a different system. You will find it there pretty quick.

What spawned ships? Inside the USS locations you mean?

Of the 20 I entered about half were just ships flying through and warping out, the rest were wanted ships which I fought or else there were just those big lakon 9s buying goods. No ships which provided a new location or anything.

Can't figure out where I am supposed to be looking, so stupid this system.

did you keep an eye on comms? if an NPC starts talking wait for them to finish then you'll get an objective update notice and the targets location will be in the mission description

As far as I can tell I've completed all the Fed Rank Missions, currently Post Commander and not seen any missions offered since hitting that rank. I've not had trouble finding what I needed on any of the kill missions, but I do use a suggestion that has been posted on these forums before; when dropping into super cruise next to the star on first entering the system, slow right down, flip 180 degrees to face away from the star and the target is usually in the 1st or 2nd USS you come across. None of the Naval Rank missions I got required me chasing anyone from one system to another.

Good luck!

will try this later on and report back. thx lads

Thanks for the tips on here, logged in today and warped away and back into system doing as suggested (180 first two usually are the npc) and just like that he appeared.

Cobra vs Federal dropship :) lol Managed to take him down. Only problem was the mission which was to give a naval rank up in federation (WHICH I AM) gave me the rank up but decreased my standing with the federation at the same time back to neutral!

What the? So I get ranked up by lose rep. That didnt make much sense. Was left bitterly disappointed having lost hours of rep grinding. I did enjoy the fight with the dropship though. That thing was nasty. I couldnt figure out what to target. I destroyed his drives which left him spinning but his turrets etc were making mince meat of me whenever I approached. Plus he kept disappearing off the radar after i nuked his drive, pretty cool :)

No, that's only the case if you took an assassination mission. The naval progression missions are for smaller ships (federal dropships, easy to kill) and are to be found in the system you are led to without additional hints or jumps.

Those missions always worked for me but recently I got two for naval progression that required me to kill pirates. Unfortunately the systems I was supposed to kill them in were anarchy systems without any stations or even a nav beacon. Not a single pirate there, not even in USS (yes, scanned via KWS).

I had one of those issued in Hors. It took a lot more searching of USS than I expected it to take... seemed like a time-waster mission.

Still dont understand why the mission would decrease rep with the federation whilst gaining rank with federation as a reward?
