Starting the process of getting a corvette, but only gaining 1 to 3 % per mission. I'm at lhs 3505 and have a decent cobra mk3. Any suggestions for faster rank up? Also is don't have horizons so skimmer missions are a no go

Fantastic post, thanks for taking the time to write it. +repI just reached Rear Admiral today and unfortunately in 2.2 it is a long grind. I refuse to mode-switch since I only play in Open so I had to take whatever the boards would give me. If you are willing to mode-switch to refresh the mission boards you can speed things up a fair bit of course. Otherwise there are no really consistent ways to advance your rank quickly unless you happen to find a system generating out a lot of donation missions and even that requires hundreds of millions of credits for the later ranks.
The three methods I've found to be reasonable (but still a very long grind) for rank progression in 2.2 are the following:
1. Data Courier/Cargo Missions - The issue here is that you need to find systems that tend to give predominantly missions back and forth between two systems rather than to all the surrounding systems. The best systems I found for this so far is Ochosi/Chapka where there are 2-3 stations in each system with multiple Fed-aligned factions and many of the missions run between the two systems. You can usually collect 12-15 data or cargo missions per loop which is reasonable progression.
2. Massacre Missions - These can still be stacked (at least until 2.3 launches) and I would recommend collecting at least 10-12 of these before going to a CZ. You will have them being filled at different rates but you will probably need to return for rearm/repair every 30-40 ships anyways and you can turn in the smaller missions every time you return to the station. This usually has the benefit of both paying well and giving reasonable progression at the same time. The issue here is that the mission generation for War state systems is very buggy right now and often one side won't give any massacre missions at all. There's also an issue with buggy and inconsistent credit for your ship kills while in a CZ. It's not enough just to simply damage your target to get credit for the kill like it is in a RES, you have to do a significant amount of damage for it to count as a kill. As a result I was finding that I only got credit for roughly 1 out of every 3 ships I attacked in a High Intensity CZ when a capital ship was present because the cap ship and escort ships were killing my targets too quickly. I spent some time in Ochosi/Chakpa doing massacre missions last week when War broke out, but it only lasted a few days and then I spent some time in Ceos although Sothis/Ceos only has a single Fed faction and isn't giving out very many massacre missions at all.
3. Donation Missions - These are hard to find in significant quantities now. Both Tun and 17 Draconis were only giving out 1-3 missions when I checked last week even when in Expansion state. This means you have to mode-switch frequently to make any consistent progress with these. Since I don't mode-switch I just took any donation missions that I saw available when I was doing other tasks, even the 1 million credit ones, as they did start to add up over time even though you can't really rely on them to show up in large quantities.
Unfortunately the days of fast ranking are over. I was using a combination of the above methods while flying a heavily-Engineered Python (which is generally the most efficient multirole ship to use for ranking that can still access outposts) and it still took me around a week of gameplay to get from Lieutenant to Rear Admiral. It is, however, worth noting that in 2.3 they will be speeding up the rank progression somewhat. I'm not sure of the numbers but it is apparently going to be around 25% faster or something so you might want to wait until 2.3 launches before tackling the rank grind. On the other hand, stacking massacre missions will be nerfed in 2.3 so that you can only have maximum 3 of those at a time so if you can find a good system that is currently giving out lots of massacre missions for a Fed-aligned faction I would recommend taking advantage of that now before it's nerfed in 2.3. Ochosi/Chakpa were good for this last week but are currently in lockdown and as I mentioned above there are very few massacre missions spawning at Sothis/Ceos right now. I don't have any leads for current War systems that are good for this right now and checked through about half a dozen only to find that the Fed-aligned factions weren't giving out any massacre missions even when I did find a system in War state.
On the upside, the Federal Corvette is a great ship and well worth the grind if you enjoy large ship combat. I purchased it today and have been outfitting and Engineering it. The firepower is great when fighting other large ships and the maneuverability is amazing for such a large ship. So far I've put a Grade 5 dirty drive tune and gotten the boost over 350 m/s so it can readily outmanevuer and outrun Anacondas which is a big combat advantage.
