Federation Rank

What's the current best way? I'm doing sothis/ceos.. so damn awful and boring, actually some of the worst gameplay I've ever played in any game.. is there another way to grind federation rank? If I sell void opals through federation systems do I gain rank? If so how much?

EDIT: I'd rather give away the billion credits I have right now to get the rank than endure this painful experience, it'll probably make me go on another 2 year break from the game.

In theory if you do enough donation missions to Fed aligned factions , you should get the naval rank missions. In practice it would most likely take longer than your current method. Not sure where the best spot is for Fed rank farming these days, but Sothis/Ceos hasn't been great since they added the extra stations.

I was thinking donation missions as well, but was unsure; if that was still a thing.

I would say spread yourself about a lot, by doing stuff for every 'Fed linked' faction you can find.

OP. I've done the fed rank "grind" 3 times with 3 different CMDRs. Not doggedly focussing on a specific goal was a less painful way of playing. YMMV.

Best way to gain rank is to perform rescue passenger missions from Thargoid damaged stations.

I was running a Cutter packed to the brim with economy passenger cabins in Wuli and Jormbu this week. The Fed aligned factions contribute to the Fed superpower rank. I was getting 5-10% progress with each run, picking reputation as the reward instead of credits. You'll still need to perform the rank acquisition missions to actually progress your rank, but you can start filling the bar for the next rank while you're at 100% of your current rank.

If it changes this Thursday, look at Galnet in-game for the current Thargoid incursion systems.

Can't promise better gameplay, but if I found Gang Yun/Zhana got fed rank done fairly quick. Better than Sothis/Ceos, unless it's been nerfed.

The fun way to do it, as Zarrazee says, is to take different missions that you enjoy doing and take the rep reward for fed minor factions. You can still speed things up by aligning with Felicia Winters and keeping powerplay rank at at least 2.

Best way is to start with Imperial rank in Cemiess. Then buy a Cutter. Afterwards just do supply missions for federal factions you are allied with, get filthy rich and collect rank as a side effect.

Translation... I just did the Void Opal gold rush and made a truck load of money and now I want my corvette just as easy as I made my billions doing the gold rush. Well enjoy another 2 year break. There is no quick and eazy way to get Fed rank.

Thanks! I took this advice and reached Rear Admiral last night. The missions dry up after a while, but I did get 10% on my first trip. Now to outfit this new Corvette....

I'm enjoying gaining rank with Assassination/Ground Assault Missions. I'm not in a rush, but regardless I find the progression snappy. I make better money than Bounty Hunting and get decent Mats too.

I'll give this a try, you've been getting 5-10% per run even at the highest ranks? If so I'mma try this with an anaconda, you just go to the station where the incursion is happening and there will be rescue missions there?

True, is there a problem with not wanting to grind for 10s of hours on top of the grind I already did to get the credits?

Grinding for rank is grinding for rank, no matter how you frame it. It's always going to be grindy because it's specifically designed to take a long time. Fdev's original vision was for most players to --not-- have a fleet of cutters and corvettes, if such a thing can be believed. Donation missions may be quick, but they never seem to get as much rank per turn-in, so one way or another, ranking up is a grind. Consider that you're also kind of at the mercy of RNG for mission spawning too...

:D Ouch! You sound a little bitter there, Commander!

I disagree. I thought it'd be fun to have plenty of rank, took on some missions I knew I'd enjoy and ranked up in a surprisingly short space of time. Not quite as quick as The M00ps, but it didn't feel like a grind, more targeted gameplay.

I still haven't bought a Cutter or a Corvette, though. Not really my thing...

i did mine on both accounts in Sothis / Ceos
used a Cobra MKIII on one account and a Sidewinder on the other
i stuck with data delivery & small cargo runs between the systems (only the fed faction).
on handing in each mission i picked the REP+++ option for rewards. (unless the material option was really good & needed)

rinse and repeat - once you hit 100% rank, carry on until you get the naval rank up mission (as any surplus gained while waiting for the mission will be carried over to the next rank).

took both accounts up to Admiral in a couple of hours..
