Newcomer / Intro Federation Rank

Hello Everyone!
So I'm following this dudes advise on ranking up....
Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCyz0d93fPo

You basically just do courier missions from Ochosi to Chapka, choosing reputation every time. What doesn't seem to make sense though is, once you're 100% Allied, why would you continue to choose Reputation? It doesn't appear you get anything higher than that. My rank is now Warrant office and I'm 100% allied. Should I still keep choosing reputation for the reward?

Yes. Rep contributes to your relationship with whatever Faction you are working out there, but that doesn't mean you have maxed your relationship with the Federation. And it's your Rep with the superpower that determines your Federal rank, so you keep choosing Rep until you are an Admiral if that's what you want. You could make a case that it's better to have as many factions as possible Allied with you (because of the mission and payout benefits) so it'd be better to move your rank efforts somewhere else every time you hit Allied, but that'd be my opinion.

Got ya! Yeah I was working on getting the Corvette. Probably pretty silly since I don't even really know how to fight yet. LOL Not to mention once I get there I'll have to figure out how to get the money to purchase one. But hey, at least I have some kind of goal in mind.
But Isn't the superpower the federation? Under status it says. Federation Allied Reputation 100%. I guess maybe I'm missing something.

Screenshot might be helpful here - I'm on my work PC, so I can't create one right now.

Anyways: "allied" is a (the highest) status you can get with the local faction. The superpower rep is staggered according to your rank with them, so it might be something like Ensign - 63% (or Petty Officer - 100%). Once that rep for the rank you are at the moment reaches 100%, you might get offered rank advancement missions. These are chain missions (chain link symbol on the mission board) with the keyword "federal navy" (in your case, or "empire navy" if you want to ultimately go for the Cutter). If the mission you are offered doesn't match your preference (like you are a freighter and get a combat mission), don't accept it - there'll be another one along. In the meantime, you can keep on collecting brownie points. They won't get lost, but already start to accumulate towards your next rank.

Just checked. Yes - that video is now three years old. So nowadays, there's at least one (possibly multiple) faster way to collect these brownie points. Outfit a cool running long range ship for bulk passenger missions. I use a fully engineered Krait Phantom for that, but most cargo/multirole ships will do. Find a station/base/whatever with a Fed presence under Thargoid attack. Run (federal) passenger evac missions. In a fast and cool/cold ship, the risk is minimal. In Thargoid attack, there are usually lots of evac misisons available. Downsides are that they don't pay too well (especially if you choose the rep reward) and that the mission targets are the support megaships a few hundred ly behind the front line (so that's three or four jumps in that Phantom, YMMV).

Wow a lot of good information thank you! I thought about getting a dolphin maybe and try my hand at ferrying passengers. Right now I'm just using my Cobra MkIII. Which handles nice with about a 24ly jump. So it's been pretty smooth if not long/boring journey, but I'm getting there. Still having fun anyway. :)

Congratulations on the Dolphin. A very nice ship for everything except combat - much more versatile than just for ferrying passengers.

Well I haven't gotten it yet, I said I thought about it lol. I just like the way it looks and thought it would be good for that purpose. Just a way to make lots of money, to maybe help me pay for that corvette, I dunno. What else could you do with it? And I was concerned about not being able to defend myself with a boatload of passengers if attacked.
And is there some kind of legend with all the symbols? For example:

what are these 3? Triangle, red skull and blue circle thingy lol.

Dolphin is also a very nice long range explorer - or (unless you got the Cobra Mk.IV) the largest cargo ship that still fits on a small pad. With properly engineered modules (essentially a slightly cooler power plant), it's also the only ship that can recharge the FSD while fuel scooping at maximum rate witout overheating, getting you a consistent 45 seconds per jump. With any other ship, you will either face overheating or be hard pressed to get your jump time below 60 seconds. And the roomy optionals mean you can fit everything you might want as an explorer except for a fighter bay. The only dowside for exploration is the non-existant downwards view - makes pinpointing exobiologicals (which are currently the big earner in exploration) harder.

Edit:
as for defense: I never was attacked (without provocation) by an NPC when carrying passengers. And the Dolphin can go fast. If you're attacked by a CMDR who is intended on killing other CMDRs, you're toast in anything smaller than a Python/Krait Mk.II (and even with those you'll have to work on it). Anything smaller can effectively be one-shotted by e.g. an appropriately built and engineered Chieftain with premium ammo.

Holy moly! You've played for a minute or two haven't you! Good information, thank you!

Thank you Fnord :)
Yeah the dude said, "you should be Rear Admiral in about 10 hours" Pfffffft right, I just played for about 12 hours and only went up 1 rank. lol. So now I'm Ensign. At least I'm half way there! haha
But why did 12 hours feel like 5 minutes?
As has been mentioned things change in the Elite Dangerous galaxy and what used to be the fastest/best/grindiest way of doing something can become just another normal speed approach.

Our perception of time varies with how much fun we are having.

Do take time out of your pursuit of the Corvette from time to time not only to let the pressure off but to experience other ships and activities not to mention learning to fight in something cheaper.

The Corvette is a splendid ship especially once engineered, so worth the effort as long as you don’t burn the fun out of the game doing it.

Thanks aRJay, Makes perfect sense! I'll take a break from time to time to do something different. I spent a couple days doing signal searches. Distress calls, weapons fire. res sites. Getting some bounties. I also spent some time doing some mining. I'll certainly take some time out doing other stuff to break up the monotony, Perhaps I'll take a trip to visit the engineers I've unlocked or to the places I've recently been permitted for. I think there were 3 different permits I got in my email. I know Sol was one of them. Can't remember the others off hand, So Good advice, thank you!

Is there like a major hub or someplace where people like to hang out in the game, where you can say hello to other players? I'm talking Horizon, I don't have Odyssey.

Not as such, mainly down to there being more places that you could be in the game than there are people on Earth to be in those places. Things aren’t helped by how the game decides who is in the same insrptance.

You are more likely to encounter people at places like Community Goal locations, none running this week, engineers bases or Shinrata Devrata but you need an Elite rank to go there. The issue with those places is that the sort of player that likes to be on the overpowered side of an involuntary fight will tend to visit looking for targets.

I think in game socialising is usually arranged outside the game.

Well that's kind of unfortunate. but it is what it is. Still a great game.

You could always get together with a specific group - there are squadrons in game for example and other groupings outside the game. You could also consider joining the Private Group (PG) Mobius ( https://elitepve.com/ ) where there is no PvP allowed (apart from some by-consent events). There used to be regular Mobius meet-ups but I don't see much activity about that these days.
