Federation ranking stuck at warrant officer.

At this point I am convinced my account is bugged. I have done countless rep missions for different federation factions in different systems. And I just cant get the rank up. It's really frustrating. I spent 10+ hours trying to advance to ensign but to no avail. If some dev could inform me of my progress that would be great. (because the UI fails to inform me what I need to do to make progress to my goal, and how much progress that is when I do it.) If the faction ranking could be as transparent as community goals are that would be a nice upgrade to the game. Simply doing rep missions for different factions won't cut it. Advancing up until warrant officer was a breeze. I only needed to do 2-3 rep missions per rank to get at the rank I am at now. But for the next one 10+ wont even suffice? (not sure how much exactly)

2-3 rep missions per rank was pretty quick tbh, certainly for me it took a lot more than that for thr earlier ranks in Fed and Empire.

Have a look at this guide it might help, I got to post commander fairly quickly several updates ago, but as I started in Fed space all the cargo/message missions were for Fed aligned factions and on occasion I had up to 20 per trip unlike the one or two currently (which is more realistic TBH)
Getting access to the Alliances capital system Alioth is worth getting as they sell the Asp and Orca at 20% discount refer to the second link for details

I'm with you on this.

Last week I took heart having read Yokai's comprehensive thoughts and guidance about this but having subsequently invested HOURS going on DAYS trying to accommodate his suggestions I feel no closer. There has been an enormous amount of discussion on this matter so it's obviously important to the community, however I can't find anything to illuminate it from the FD side.

It's like a motorway traffic jam: if you know why it's there and what it consists of it becomes tolerable. If you don't it's insufferable.

So yes - let's have the math. Come on FD!

Do some rares trading in Fed space to fed faction controlled stations. I went from Baron to Viscount in the empire just from doing that plus CG events there - I wasn't hitting rep missions at all having got the rank for clipper.

I also just finally got ensign from the Feds from a few trading runs in my new Python after having been WO for a couple of months mostly spent in Empire space.

I got the Alioth system permit in less than a day tho. I was expecting that to take longer.

that guide is pretty helpful.. it explains the rng and that the chances you roll become higher with better reputation.. however, point D made at the end of the post is just false.. ALL federation factions are allied.. Following this guy's logic there are just no opportunities to increase major faction rep. Because all minor factions are already allied. That wouldnt make sense would it?

Seems a bit daft but your Rep might work against you. I went from Petty Officer to LT Commander in very short order with "unfriendly" status, getting back to neutral in the process. Seems the advancement missions dry up the friendlier you get...

I too was stuck at warrant officer. I read Yokai's (very helpful) guide and then did this:

Looked for an agriculture/industrial Fed system, choosing Korwei (not sure on the spelling). This system has two stations - one agricultural and one industrial. I traded for a bit between the two stations, and eventually the "deliver food" missions started to pop.

These missions always involve shuttling agricultural goods to one station and food canisters to the other. By completing these missions while still trading between the stations I was able to advance from warrant officer to lieutenant in one hour.

So yeah somehow I did finally get the rank up mission after finding a LOT of new systems and minor factions to do rep missions for, even though they are already allied.

it takes me about 2 weeks to get to the top rank from scratch. My strategy is to find a cluster of systems with different economy (extraction, industrial, agriculture, high-tech). I will then take delivery/taxi and shopping missions to the nearby systems and pickup more missions from local Empire/Fed factions and buy commodities you need to turn in for those shopping missions. Soon you will find yourself running around these systems in loop with 6-8 active missions at all time (when you deliver you pick up new mission). Complete the loop 3-4 times (it will take about 2-3 hours) then move on to the next cluster.

Dont bother with kill missions as it takes too long. Don't bother with assassination mission (until FD fix it) as it sometimes bugged and you have no choice but to abandon, which net you a negative rep from the Major faction.

This :) and since we all like to make some cash while doing all these missions- only trade in your faction controlled star ports. You don't want to help the economy of your "enemies". You could take missions from start ports that are not in your desired faction, that will in the end turn the station into a faction station, but you should not trade in a non-faction star port. That will just help that star port to stay independent.

Edit: When you get friendly with a station its time to move on. Try to get as many friendly stations as possible. Only reason to get allied with a station is for the alleged % price cut on fuel and other non-trading stuff. (I have never calculated if it really is a price cut for allied stations, but apparently there is)

It can take _weeks_ between progression missions if you are unlucky. Happened to me.

Just keep raising your rep in several subfactions and eventually the mission will pop.

Just be patient. : )

I feel your pain! I have also been stuck for a couple of months.

I would not care if it were not for the fact I really want the dropship.

A change of location and a conscious decision to stop your trade route are needed. I tried to grind up Fed faction whilst "doing exactly what I had been doing" and it took forever. Once you put down the space trucker cap (if indeed you are wearing one) and stick to BB (Bulletin Board) missions in a new area, for new unworked upon factions, things will move faster.

I was completely stalled after getting Ensign, because I was still running the same goods between the same two stations, taking the odd BB mission for the same two factions :) I ended up moving out 50LY to Hors to finish off from LT to Post Commander, which I think needed over 100 missions. A very well-researched pen and paper note of stations in the area selling specific goods helps (or use Thrudd's or any other tool if you don't have the patience to make your own notes, which I didn't!)

Minor faction reputation is relational, not actual. It's badly demonstrated in game.

Let's assume you have gained no reputation with a federation minor faction. But have allied federation.

The minor faction regards you as allied because you're federation allied. But beneath that they actually still only regard you as neutral.

You used to be able to see this on the mission summary screen. But FD changed that.

It's badly designed because there is no way to know what your reputation is with a minor faction now. Unless you're neutral with their major faction.

The whole rank system is badly designed and a place holder. Hopefully, 1.3 will change this. Until then, I'd hold off. But if you don't wish to, the only way to get these missions is by doing missions for minor factions. You won't have a clue if they already see you as allied except for remembering if you did loads of missions for them already.

But suffice to say, hanging around one system for too long will not give you any more rank missions.

It does work. It's just a very obtuse system. I can only think it was designed not to be analysed, so that rank progression occurs "naturally".

It took me one week to grind up to Baron status, and then another week to get up to Count.
I have been grinding as Count for close to a week now- hopefully the Earl mission will come soon.

The minor factions were probibly not allied , the main faction they were attached to was allied , the current system only shows the top level of faction you have , so Allied with Feds will always show Allied with Fed minor factions , even if you are not.

I would not care if it were not for the fact I really want the dropship.

hey jenrai.. So I bought the dropship straight away, trading in my asp. But im telling you now: The dropship is NOT a heavy "multipurpose". It is a combat ship that can have some cargo space. The jump range is terrible, the cargo space is the same as an asp give or take. It turns and accellerates/decelerates SUPER slow. It is a slow combat ship with cargo space and more available power for shield boosters. On top of that all the high class modules are very expensive. I have roughly 18 million worth of upgrades now and the ship and I still dont like it. The only place I see this ship shine as of now is in conflict zones.. The size 6 power distributor lets you fire A LOT. I think im selling it again and get my asp back.. (2 million gone, woops)

In summary, the dropship is NOT part of the natural multipurpose progression curve.. ie sidewinder-adder-cobra-asp-clipper?-python-anaconda.
I heard that the clipper is actually a really good multipurpose ship, with decent jump range, good cargo space, good maneuverability/speed and decent firepower. So im going for the clipper next. Dropship not for me.

I have some similar issues, having 'allied' status with the feds, it's really hard to guess when to stop doing missions for minor factions... Usually I just do it for an evening and then switch. Also it's very very important never to drop / abandon missions, or fail them. That course of action is said to set you back a dozen missions or so, definitely something you want to avoid.

I find that assassination missions are just too bothersome, finding your target takes way too long, plus you get the risk of falling into the bug and having to abandon the mission, so it's a big 'no no' for me.

Sometimes I do the finding art work / black box / military plans missions for the sake of doing different kind of missions, but the WUSS are very random, you may end up floating space for a long time if you're unlucky.

Best rep' reward / hour I found are the donations they ask for (not the money ones, but food for example). Liberating slaves seems to be a biggie too, although you have to smuggle them into the station.

I thought i was stuck at 'petty officer' for a while, but after insisting and switching around, I'm 'Ensign' now.

Also, this may be important: sometimes you DO have the right amount of reputation to 'level up', but the mission just doesn't appear. It pays to log off / back on again in such cases, I had some nice surprises twice already. Of course there's no indicator whatsoever, just do it from time to time...
