Feel like we need a general chat thing.

General chat within space station range would be good. Personally, I wouldn't want system-wide chat as it would take a lot of the Elite feel away.
Yes, I've suggested this before. It could be in the form of a "pub" accessible from the station services, later when we can actually walk to the pub this function might get superseded or replaced.

I agree that a system-wide broadcast system would be nice (note I did not say chat there, I was thinking more of pre-canned messages) for in flight. Would also love to see a station chat channel for all docked ships (useful at anarchies to advise and coordinate on the inevitable Anaconda blockades that will form).

What I would also like to see is the 'Incoming Message' audible alarm brought back for the first time a commander tries to contact you via text chat, and a 'chat to last sender' button.

Someone was pinging my ship in Super Cruise, and I didn't notice till I happened to glance up, by which time the poor guy or gal was several messages in and shouting at me all in caps. Then you've got to hit the chat key, target their ship, select, then respond. Felt very clunky, and a bit dangerous as both of us were doing about 0.8c on the run in to Aulin, which is a very quick trip anyway. :)

bah - away with thee!! i only want to talk to myself (as i mostly do anyhows :) )

I also got that "voice channel" as a default setup. A conversational well of wonders, but somewhat empty of surprises! ;)

To the thread at large, I like the station proximity chat idea, but it could be attractive to gold sellers, and various other low life out there. Somewhat mitigated by not using the most obvious places, of course. I am aware that the best way to avoid the scum of the internet, is to just cut that cable (if not on wireless), and that we should have the ability to communicate, even with those Goblins lurking around. :)

System chat would not be out of place in more technologically advanced systems given that they'd have likely invested in expensive communication relay networks.

I have no doubt that some would baulk at this because it would remove an element of 'loneliness' though!

System chat would add so much to the game. Seriously incredible amounts. People that don't want to see chat (I understand where they are coming from) can turn it off.

Chat adds *sooo* much to the games community, to events in the world, to spotaneity, asking for people, warning, setting traps.. it's all glorious, and it's just lame to prevent it because "1% of the population occassionally tries to annoy others by saying annoying things, and 1% of the rest of the population actually gets bothered by this and complains about it on the forums rather than just turning it off like you can"

It leads to spamming. All the time. And it gives away too much information. Which I saw abused a lot in other games.

I absolutely support the idea of a system chat!

In fact, this may sound dumb, but I thought that if I target the station when docked and engage text communication - I am using the 'station general chat'. For an hour or two I was wondering why absolutely no one would write back to me in the 'general' chat.

Actually, I'll be thankful if someone explains to me what is the point to be able to even do that? Write to an AI station where nobody reads you? That's very strange and confusing.

Anyhow, +1000 for a general station chat! It already feels pretty lonely when you have no friends in-game. I'm 2 days into the action and still nobody has ever responded to my text messages. :( Pretty sure I contacted three or four players too, but nothing. :(

I also like the idea of a general chat channel within station range. What we dont want is an equivalent of Eve's System chat, where you can instantly see anyone who is in the system at that moment.

How?

Busy systems would feel populated, far away places would be silent. Unless you like talking to yourself.
How would that take away that Elite feel?

A system wide chat with localized station awareness would be great. If you dont like chat turn it off. I play online games so I can meet and play with others outside of my circle.

Please give us system chat, but any chat would be good.

Station Chat & Planet Chat (radius set to X amount) would do me, System wide as an On/Off option...there for those that want it, turned off for those that don't.

Yes I agree, station chat and local chat (as options to turn on and off as we feel like it) would be nice as long as we have the choice of blocking someone if necessary

+1 would be nice to have a broadcast channel within an instance (which can be disabled by individuals of course).

Yeah, I always hated that.
Most chat channels don't show all the players who *could* talk there, Eve is a bit of a special case on that. So for Elite, a normal system-wide chat, if you don't want people to know you're there, just don't say anything. :)
