Fer De Lance Build

I used to have a pretty similar build for pve.

Instead of a huge fixed cannon, I had a huge PA, and instead of a second medium PA, I had a single gimballed multi-cannon. It was great for module sniping with the double PA set-up. The single gimballed MC lets you deal with smaller ships easily.

I would recommend trying it out OP if you have enough CR for a huge PA.

Never quite enjoyed the Cannon.
I could never see that slow flying bullet compared to the quite obviously visible Plasma Charge from the PA.
I also tried 2 Medium PA but they did not do the same module damage as a Huge PA for some reason. Or maybe the Huge PA has a large splash damage circle.
With 4 Medium Pulse I can keep firing on my target for a whole minute , and a 4 second pause would allow me to fire the Huge Plasma.
I spend too many hours in Haz Rez to use a MultiGun ... it runs out long before I run out of pirates. If anything when I ran out of bullets is when I had the most pirates around me asking to be destroyed :(
I leave when I am out of PA rounds.

What heat ? The new FDL is a Mega Heatsink ? I can also use a SCB with no overheating.
Perhaps its those Beam lasers of yours .... not even my anaconda can keep firing them without overheating.

The 2 medium plasmas and the huge cannon will put heat up high after a couple of shots.
 
I got an FDL recently, wasn't sure about it but it's really growing on me.

Do you find the cannon hits subsystems much? I don't like them personally, the projectile is so slow. Also, the class 4 PA is such a power hog for the weapon distributer, after using other weapons I always have to wait for the distributer to recharge before firing. Between them I prefer loading a class 3 thermal there just now (roll on more class 4 weapons). So far I'm liking:

but I'll give the twin PA's a go now, see how they feel.

Class 3 burst does 80% the damage of a class 3 beam whilst using almost half the distributer (just a little more than a pulse), similar for class 2, means it can pew for longer. And I don't mind fixed for the burst, they're either hitting big easy targets, or I use the multi's if I've got something buzzing around. I find they last a long time

X2 medium cannons and a huge cannon all gimballed work well against power plants, just need to get close which is easy in the lance.
 
The 4B shield cells give you more recharge than the 4A because you get 5 of them. What do you do with that FDL? It's no good for RES farming because of the ammo. Three beam lasers are better for that. That's all I use, so I can stay out for hours.

I normally sit in a hazrez for about 35 mins at a time before I go off and do some trading, smuggling etc. Can easily make a good few million I'm that time.

This is why I don't use the FdL any more. I've experimented with it a number of times but each time I've come to the conclusion that it's under weaponed. The class 4 slot is useless against pretty much anything smaller than a Python so unless you fit a C3 in the slot you're limited to 4 c2s. That's about as much firepower as an Asp. (2xC2 & 4XC1)

Roll on class 4 lasers. Then it'll be worth flying. I just hope they're going to be gimballed. I can't hit the side of a barn with fixed weapons

The fixed/gimaballed combo is a bit odd but really works for me, let's me engage at longer range and do more damage against big ship, while still dealing with small ships quickly.

Gimballed cannon, I'm not too sure about, great for point blank snap shots, useless for everything else. i can't help but feel that I'm waiting for the C4 Multicannon to really make this build shine! ;)
 
Are you aware that B shield banks have more total charge than A shield banks? Because although they give a bit less charge per bank pop, they have an extra charge which works out as quite a bit more total charge. Worth considering in PvE, they use a bit less power too.

In a firefight, hands-down the FDL is superior to all other ships in my opinion, the only exception being the FAS- although I cannot buy one just yet, fighting them is the hardest.

I use a gimbaled 4C Cannon and 4 class 2 beam lasers- I use 5A shield, a 4A shield cell, and 4 0A shield boosters. I can take out any ship one-on-one in a matter of a minute (outside of a CZ- they seem to be tougher there)- maybe a little longer with the anaconda- with the only exceptions being the Cutter, the Corvette, and the oddly, the FAS (too agile to consistently target in a good firing arc). The are still beatable one-on-one, but take longer. 50% of the time, I can take out an Anaconda and Asp Explorer without them even firing a shot in return.

The beams eat the shields- and get close- they seem to be more effective the closer you are. Then I target the power generator and get in close.. the tandem beams/cannon are super accurate and when the ship's belly is exposed, it does large amounts of damage to it. Once the power is at 0, I fire the beams only until the ship explodes, which is just 5 more seconds with the power still targetted.

How are you using beams, and still being able to power the SCB's and any boosters you have? (maybe the cannon is the difference?)

I would respectfully suggest that if you are using turrets on the FDL you are doing it wrong. ;)
 
I can keep behind the targets almost 100%, so I could do without the turrets.
Just like to keep the targets annoyed with me ;-)

Only just started serious combat. I'm already Elite explorer and trader, and now Expert +20%.
I can improve this at about 10% per hour in a not so hot RES.
Good enough for me right now.
