Fer de lance or Federal GunShip

Bought the FGS for 35 million loving it! Things a super tank! Practically A graded and took it out around Gende in the Hazardous zones. Loved it. Trying to see what makes the FDL better?

I doubt that the FDL is better at RES work, although this might change when new huge weapons are available.

FDL makes a good PVP weapon though due to its OP heat resistance - you can put on 5 railguns and not fry your internals. *However* I think this is getting nerfed in 1.6/2.1 :(

I've never flown either of them but what I know:

FDL Pros:
Can shield Tank
Huge Hardpoint will be good when the next update lands
Faster and more agile

FGS Pros:
Can Hull tank
More hardpoints means more versatility of builds
Has cool wings :)

Basically if you want a fighter that is a glass cannon- zippy and hits hard the FDL is better, but it you want a ship that can hit hard but take a lot of hits itself then the FGS is your ship

I say stay with the gunship since it has more firepower, armour, jump range (not by much though) and with a bi-weave shield when your shields do go down they'll be back in about a minute.
Note to self... Read dev posts.

Very helpful thank you. I think I will stick with FGS I'm really happy with it but I curious about the FDL but I get the feeling when 2.1/2.2 lands that huge hard point will become very very handy.

lovin my gunship [yesnod]

62.5 mil value with outfit including discount

I was pleasantly suprised to see my bank balance only loose about CR 73,000,000 of my CR173,000,000 lol going to re-kit my Conda for trade/exploration gonna need rank and more cash for a cutter. But I got to say the Gunship is brilliant. Much better then the Assault ship.

Thanks dude think I will.

As is frequent, which is better is subjective (not to bring "that hippy aspect" in to the discussion here!)

The FDL isn't exactly poetry in motion, but many find the gunship to be a step too far in terms of sluggish movement.

In my eyes I've never liked ships that are slow in a straight line either-I find it more important than people give credit to.

And despite the gunship's 7 hardpoints, both ships have 4 mediums, and it's arguable (read: down to preference) whether you'll find a large and two small better than a huge. At this stage in ships, small hardpoints are a bit "meh", but the huge hardpoint has a stupidly limited selection if you aren't a fan of the unwieldly-but-devastating C4 PA.

As mentioned though, if you like creative loadouts rather than the apparently standard "pulses and mcs", 7 hardpoints looks like it can be a lot of fun.

In my view the FDL is a better solo ship and the gunship makes a truly excellent pressure tool in a wing with a more agile counterpart...but as always, pick what seems right to you. Unlike most other games, what feels right will have the real advantage in ED :)

Federal Assault Ship.

There's always one... ;)

Federal Assault Ship.

If I had to choose between FAS and FGS I would choose FAS :) I've never understood why the FGS needs a higher federal rank

However, the FDL is a blast to fly. And the huge hardpoint! Other ships in the game that have a huge HP are slow to turn and...slow. The FDL's maneuverability plus huge HP make it very effective in the right hands.

I loved both my gunship and my FDL but as StiTch said the gunship is more for wing combat which means those shields become viable, whereas the FDL is definitely better for solo combat.

When 1.6 drops the new huge weapons will be a big difference for the FDL especially that huge beam.

At the moment I would say both ships are great but it depends on your play style.

I don't know why the FDL is only receiving credit for its huge hardpoint with regards to the future update offering alternative weapons. It can power a HUGE plasma and it can do some heavy damage to things quite easily.

Based on the preview of the huge beam we saw, I highly doubt the distributor of the FDL will be firing one for very long and I especially concern myself with it being practical when the capacitor is drained quickly and renders the additional weaponry equipped pretty much out of action.

I do, however, expect this beam to hurt bad and quickly as a result.

Anyway. I'd say the FDL is better than the Gunship simply because it has better maneuverability, speed and a strong shield and can work very well with 6 utility points offering a good range of options.

The Gunship has 2 additional hard points but they are small only and the large hardpoint isn't as good as the FDL offering a HUGE hardpoint.

Yeah, I'm not sure if the huge beam will be a good fit on the FDL, maybe huge pulse plus multicannons?

Only thing with the quad approach, I found even pulses were too much for the capacitor unless pips were fully swung, relying on full wep is fine for single engagements but a problem when taking wings on. Twin medium beams worked fine on my fas so on that basis gonna try huge multi, twin beams and two homing missile racks. Or maybe torps. Can't wait for missiles to have purpose again :)

Huge plas is indeed very tasty (especially in looks) but snag is, the fas can field two large plasmas which outclasses the fdl's single huge by quite a wide margin. The two sizes have the same damage per energy ratio but large has a better fire rate. Another nice thing is whenever the capacitor doesn't have the energy to fire both it can usually just fire the one, which is often a handy bonus in the heat of the moment, though the resulting asymmetry in ammo count can be awkward (I keep a fire group with one on each trigger to even them back out).

anyway enough of that, sorry this is meant to be about fgs not fas isn't it :) but there's one reason the huge on the fdl hasn't been quite the trump card it looks like.. *so far* :p
