Fer-de-Pants

After reading so many bad things about the Fer-de-Lance I skipped straight past it in favour of the much loved Python.

Investing considerably into the Python and fully kitting out my Clipper and Asp. I eventually had some lazy money floating around and thought I'd try out the FDL myself. I kitted her up (mostly B class with a few A's, couplings, fsd, Power)
- I head out to a RES and spent about an hour shooting up smaller ships, getting used to it in combat.

My load out (Class 2 Gim Burst all round, with Gim Class 3 Pulse on the large hardpoint) predictably made short work of all the smaller ships, when I could manage to get a bead on them. I was having a fair amount of trouble maneuvering the ship onto the smaller ones ( compared to the Clipper or Python) but I put this down to my in-experience with the ship handling.

Eventually I came across a wanted npc Clipper.
Feeling confident, I snuck up on it, targeted it's power supply, and took out it's shields in a couple of cheeky volleys directly into the tail pipe.
I also managed to take about 30% of the Clippers Hull before it quickly turned to face me.

I thought, "Ok here we go, I have the full advantage.. The Clipper had no shields and was already suffering a 30% loss to hull integrity."

I thought I could safely go toe to toe in a full frontal battle.
Let's do this.. both facing each other, we both unleashed..
I was wrong... so very very wrong..
The Clipper absolutely decimated me, while I only managed to take a further 20% off it. (leaving it at 50% hull)

It's probably a good time to point out I'm no slouch when it comes to combat, by no means the best, but I am currently rankd Dangerous and about 37% off becoming Elite. I have earned my stripes.

How and why is this ship so bad..
It handles like a Yak9 in combat, and sports a payload which feels more like a Cobra than 50 million dollar Fighter Class. (I will take some responsibility for the latter)

I love the sounds and speedy feels, but man, as the largest fighter... it's reputation as a lemon is not exaggerated.

Hope this ship gets a bit of love at some point.
In the mean time I'm back in my Python. :)

I'm going to give the FDL a miss.
It really doesn't stick out for me as a ship I want to buy. It does have a massive weapon slot (what do they call it, "Enormous" or something like that?).
Anyways, I love my Vulture.
I think I'll go from Vulture to Anaconda in my upgrade path :D
Or maybe even wait until the Imperial Cutter comes out. ;-)

That engine sound, though. Haven't owned one yet, but I've wanted one since I first heard it.

I was sitting in a station looking through the bulletin board missions, happily oblivous to everything going on around me while listening to the station chatter in my headphones, when suddenly it sounded like a Star Destroyer was buzzing my pad. I quit the station interface and looked to my right, where the sound was coming from, and saw a Fer-de-Lance slowly easing into the pad next to me, sounding like an earthquake in progress. I turned up the sound and just sat there watching until it had finished docking. Definitely a contender for best engine sound in the game.

FDL definitely takes time to get used to. I remember hating on it when I first bought it, but once you start using its thrusters correctly and have good hardpoints, it will kick butt.
It needs an A4 Plasma Accelerator or else you might as well go use the Python. It's relatively poor turning rate can be offset by its hugely powerful thrusters.

FDL is my #2 combat ship, with the Anaconda being #1. I can't stress enough of how powerful a FDL can be especially in the hands of a skilled pilot.

Many have no problem taking any ship NPC, or CMDR in FDL. Once you figure out the proper loadout, it's phenomenal in certain situations.

OK cool, good to know.
I'll kit a A4 PA on it and give it another run at some point.
My initial experience was much the same as yours, so I'll take your advice and try to get the hang of it.
Cheers Shadowed.

Elpapo - Did you read my post properly?
Piloting skill in a head to head shoot out?... er...

FDL is a lot of fun and very powerful at the cost of a really bad frame shift drive. Currently enjoying a Python right now, but mainly for trade rank purposes. Once I get bored of the Centum Imperialis route (Say, 60m later) I'll be back on the FDL no problem.

Gimme this and I'll be stuck on it forever

-4 more ly of jump range
-The ability to use my fuel scoop to its full potential without frying the ship. (Yes, this is a big issue for travel)
-Better stock fuel tank
-And a bonus: Have the CZ clones in powerplay actually give credits similar or equal to normal CZs.

I really don't get how people about the how they can't keep a bead on smaller things in an FDL but they can in a Python?! In what world does the Python turn and handle better than my precious? I lasted all of 10 minutes in the big cow before going switching back.

One thing that I do agree with in these posts is the total meh that is the Huge hardpoint. Huge and Large need more options in general. Why do FD claim that large multicannons would be OP but large lasers of all kinds are ok?

The FdL is the only ship I cannot fly around a RES without accidentally splattering across an asteroid because that ship drifts more than it turns, and any contact with rocks makes it instantly explode. And I can fly a Clipper through them just fine.

Saying that, I'll only buy another one if I have credits to spare, 'cuz I'm mildly curious how much 4 Imperial Hammers will melt it into uselessness. Besides that, I prefer my Python.

losing in 1v1 with NPC clipper... in FDL?
how? My FDL beating 3 anacondas NPC. I can ram to death PLAYERS in clippers.

FDL is BEST PvP ship. not best PvE, but best PvP.

FDL is a great ship and really shines in PVP. If you want something for PVE I recommend a Vulture. Pythons are really not necessary for PVE; I've never had an issue in CZ's with my Vulture even after the AI changes, but I suppose if you want more firepower the Python is good just much more expensive.

FDL can turn just fine but you need to know how to use FA-off. The hardpoints aren't as bad as people say, it just takes some getting used to. And yes, you do need to fit the Huge hardpoint with a Huge weapon to get the most out of it. Plasma is best and you need to be pretty close to be able to hit.

FDL is a great ship; may not have the shields of the Python or Anaconda but the speed and agility make up for it.

Fdl can have much stronger shields than python

Yup, I'm in a similar boat.. trying to love this ship, but it's just not doing it for me. I've got A modules throughout but it just feels like a space slug to me.. I went from the L7 to the FDL, tried the Python but hated the handling and then to the other extreme, a vulture but for some strange reason felt compelled to buy another FDL. Maybe time to go back to a Cobra for smuggling and a Vulture for pew pew.

Being seasoned in a Python or Vulture is not the same as a good FDL pilot. What the FDL needs for good performance, is constant PIP management. With no pips to ENG it turns as bad as a Python. But if you give 4 pips to ENG, it starst turning really nice. The FDL responds more to ENG pips for the better (3 and 4 pips) and for the worse (0 and 1 pip) than other ships.

The B class gear you mentioned might have made the FDL too heavy and hence too sluggish. If one cannot afford A class, it is better to stick to D or C class.

With the huge hard point, two philosophies were fun for me: Large Cannon for big hull sub system damage for very little Energy/heat or a large fixed beam laser for more constant damage.

Losing to an NPC is something, many of us will have to get used to, as the AI is improving, and Deadly might mean Deadly at some point. Next time, please check an report your enemies rank.
Going head to head with a (Deadly or Elite) Clipper is not a good idea, unless you are dropping chaff or having 4 pips to shields.

Did you figure out a way to become Elite without becoming Deadly first. Wicked. ;)

Almost Elite and you chose to go head to head???

The Clipper's Achilles Heel is the drives, not the power plant. Select either drive and you get hits on it from just about any approach angle. Kill one drive and it goes pop.

How does one get so highly rated in combat and not learn these things?

Disagree.

No it doesn't.

A FdL should be able to go toe to toe with a Clipper and tear it a new one.

I don't even need weapons to reliably kill NPC Clippers with an FDL.
