Elite / Frontier FFE Mission Help

So I'm trying to complete the 'Destruction of Rockforth Legal Academy' mission and am running into problems. I'm flying manually, skimming the surface at anywhere between 2500-3k altitude. I get about 200km out and fire highest non-nuke yield missiles available and watch them hit the academy. When I get back to planet the mission started on, I get a message telling me how pathetic my attempt was and my services would no longer be needed.

Luckily, I have a ton of saved games and go back to try again. This time, I get within 99km of the target, which ain't easy given the amount of pilots they have protecting the place. Again, I fire all 4 high yield missiles, watch them hit before hyperspacing out, only to have the financiers say it was pathetic again.

How close do you have to get to hit the dang thing? It was nearly impossible to get within >100km. I can't imagine getting any closer. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

I think you have to be within 10k for a missile to work. Why can't you get closer? I'm sure i got into single figures km without any problems. Are you sure it's not over the horizon of the planet, and you are "seeing through" the planet and crashing into it?

Here's what i did:

Enter from orbit some distance from the academy.
Descend to between 5000 and 10000 metres.
Point yourself towards the academy and fly slowly towards it.
As you are flying so low, most of the enemies will crash trying to attack you. With a few shields you should be safe.
Keep an eye on your height. Planets have hills and if you arent careful you may crash into one. Keep yourself between 5000 and 10000 and you'll be fine.
Eventually the academy will come over the horizon and you will be able to approach in until you can actually see the buildings.
When you are close (i think i shot from about 2k away) let 'em have it.

You have to be really close "wait until you see the white's of their eyes boys"

When you hit the acadamy it will be destroyed and you will see the damage done.

Check out the screenie. This shows about where I am. I really thought I was close enough. I was able to get under 100km and fire all my missiles, but I guess that's not good enough either.

I'll keep trying. If it's possible, I'll get it eventually. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't wasting my time on a bugged mission. Thanks

Ah interesting link. Looks like I'm too close. What a strange bug. Haha. Thanks for the info.

EDIT: I've come to the conclusion that this mission is bugged for me. I've tried everything from shooting close to shooting far away. I can't complete it for some reason. I ever started over from the beginning of when I accepted it. No luck. I REALLY want to finish this mission, so by all means, if you have any other useful suggestion, please let me know. Thanks all.

Well to me it looks like you're too far away. Fly out of that crater (or ravine, whatever it is) and keep going towards the academy until you're within 10k.

Or perhaps i misunderstand.

To be honest I haven't tried to do the mission in the Russian Mod, I'll give it a go and see what happens.

Just found this on Jades FFE Site.

Destroy Rockforth legal academy

You are to turn the Rockforth building in Ackwada (-5,-3) into a nice, flat, plain piece of ground. It's just like a typical bombing-mission, but there's a bug here: the building sometimes doesn't get destroyed when you hit it from close-distance. You have to fire on it from +/- 200KM away, and hit SHIFT-F4 to advance time. The mission will score only then. You'll see a "DONE" in your mission roster when you're successful. If you're feeling brave, you can also check the damage by doing a low-level flypast. If there are columns of flame, the base has been destroyed.

Hope it helps :D

You may be on to something. Maybe it's a bug in the Russian mob. I think I'll try it from the beginning with the other version and see what happens.

You can always load your save into the old version, complete the mission, save and then continue in the Russian version.

Tried it too. Nothing seems to work. Guess I'll see if I can get closer before launching the missiles. I'm so frustrated with this mission but determined to finish it. I don't know if email addresses are allowed in the main forum, but I'll be glad to send someone a few of my commander files if you want to give it a shot and let me know if you were able to complete it.

The forum has a private message service (PM) so if anyone wants to contact a member direct they can.

If someone wants a copy of my commander files so they can give this a shot and tell me what I'm doing wrong or if this mission is bugged, send me a PM with your email address and I'll send you a copy. Thanks

I recall that the mission is bugged. Your best bet would be firing missiles from two hundred or so km away, then setting stardreamer to the max. Should work.

Have you actually got within 10km yet though? If not then you don't know it's bugged.

Unfortunately not. The closest I've gotten is under 50km, which theoretically should be plenty close enough for missiles. I always get killed way before getting under 10km. Either that or there are so many ships defending the place that FPS drops to unplayable level.

And you have tried my low-flying suggestion? I find that if you hug the ground and fly slowly, all the enemy pilots crash.

Failing that, get more shields. What are you flying by the way?

Yep, I've hugged the ground all the way in. I'm flying a Cobra MkIII. Thanks for all of the suggestions. I'll forge ahead and see what happens.

OK then assuming these are true:

-You have tried the 200km missile fire, put on stardreamer cheat/workaround
-You are unable to get within 10km of the academy without dying
-You have money to spend

Then this would be my Strategy:

Strip everything unnecesary out of your ship. Even the laser. Put in a 1MW pulse if you simply cannot fathom the idea of not having a laser.
Get rid of all cargo.
Only take as much fuel as you know you will need
Buy an energy bomb, and fill the ship up with as many shields as you can. Get an energy booster unit if you can fit it in.

Take the low-flying, stealth approach. Your shields should hold without you even needing to fire back, and most of the enemies will hopefully crash anyway.
If you are close and are taking a pounding, let them taste some energy bomb.
Get within 10k and let those disgusting alien weirdos eat plutonium death.
