Original mission announcement (juli 3301):
Expedition to circumnavigate the galaxy
The First Great Expedition (FGE) is announcing that their long awaited major voyage of discovery will commence on Saturday 1st August 3301.
A flotilla will formally launch the voyage from Sol, the ancestral home of humanity, and proceed to Brackett Orbital in the HIP 83716 system where it will rendezvous with the main fleet.
The first leg of the voyage will be to the Lagoon Nebula where the fleet will establish a base camp and explore the surrounding area. Over the next 12 months the fleet will follow the Sagittarius-Carina arm to Beagle Point on the far side of the galaxy.
"We will progress in a pace that allows for careful charting of the unknown regions of the galaxy. If you want to race you should sign up for Buckyball instead", says CMDR Gibbonici of the FGE. He continues: "The expedition will establish meetups at regular intervals along the route, allowing explorers to form up in wings. This is a chance for explorers to work together and be part of something bigger".
From Beagle Point the fleet will return, exploring sections of the Scutum-Centaurus, Cygnus, and Perseus arms until a complete circumnavigation of the galaxy has been accomplished.
When asked how to deal with the prolonged stay in deep space one commander answered: "Our previous research voyages have given us a lot of practice in handling this. I'm confident that together we can pull this off. Also, I'll plant a vegetable garden in my empty cargo hold and bring a pair of Zosi Cybercats for company."
Applications for participation are still open and the expedition will be reported through press releases, blogs and live video feeds.

Thanks to the magic of CMDR Finwen our maps are available to all in EDDiscovery. Now you can see your travel route plotted against all known POIs from the Galactic Mapping project and the FGE Sagittarius-Carina Mission. (But only when you travel through the same areas as those we have charted in this mission. We might be supplying a few general overview maps of the galaxy as well as a detailed map of the area surrounding civilized space soon (tm)).
Here is a closeup of the Eta Carina area.
And here is a zoom-out of the lower 4th quadrant.

Major POI´s
The Aucocks Pocket
POI Type: Exploration Hazard (Medium)
Band of Brown Dwarf and T-Tauri sectors on the near edge of the Sagittarius Gap, approx. 2,000 - 2,500 LYs from Sol. The Aucocks Pocket is the first navigational hazard explorers encounter when traveling coreward. Commanders are advised to plot a route at least 100 LYs above the galactic plane when approaching the Sagittarius Gap as this is usually sufficient to avoid the Aucocks Pocket.

Region within the central Sagittarius arm where an explorer became disoriented due to fatigue and transmitted the following cryptic message back to his home base of Zende; "..late at night after scanning for some hours, when the eyes get tired and the nebula of good wine befogs the mind, the letters began to move and reorder themselves. When home sickness let me zoom to Zende and my view turned back to the little peak that denoted my position, a faint gray writing appeared above the Sagittarius Arm. Like the words "Achenar" or "Sol" give the daring explorer the warmth of a domestic hearth fire, these words denoted the foreign mysteries I was chasing: Owls Garden"

POI Type: Visual
The third and fourth planets are a binary pair of Ammonia Worlds. Like identical twins, they may look very similar but there are differences: the atmospheric composition is the main difference, with planet 3 being high in nitrogen but low in carbon dioxide whilst planet 4 has a very high proportion of carbon dioxide in its atmosphere but is low in nitrogen. The presence of this greenhouse gas is likely responsible for most of the 36K difference in surface temperature even though surface pressure is fairly similar.

FGE Maps and EDDiscovery
Thanks to the magic of CMDR Finwen our maps are available to all in EDDiscovery. Now you can see your travel route plotted against all known POIs from the Galactic Mapping project and the FGE Sagittarius-Carina Mission. (But only when you travel through the same areas as those we have charted in this mission. We might be supplying a few general overview maps of the galaxy as well as a detailed map of the area surrounding civilized space soon (tm)).
Here is a closeup of the Eta Carina area.

And here is a zoom-out of the lower 4th quadrant.

For further updates and info on the mission visit the FGE website, our facebook group, forums and wiki.
