Fighter as a planetary vehicle

OK, so we have these planetary vehicle hangars and we have these fighter bays in our ships (or at least some of them). Why don't merge the two? Of course, current fighters don't have the utilities the SRV has, but they do have hardpoints, they must have some internal compartments, so there should be some room for 2T of cargo. SRV version would be purchased the same way you buy combat outfitted fighters.

I hear FD have no plans for introducing more ground vehicles for now. So why not use assets already in game and put a twist on them? What I'm asking for is getting a surface glider which doesn't need FD to develop something completely new from scratch. To get something like this: http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/M-44_Hammerhead?file=M-44_Hammerhead_2160p.png This can shoot at things (skimmers, turrets, aliens) as well as collect resources.

Just better looking, but the fighters already look better. There might be a problem of launching them on the ground, but you could launch them "mid-air" and have the AI take over the mothership (as it does with the current SRV or when you fly your fighter yourself)

Yep. Been mentioned to death but never goes anywhere.

Probably because it's a bit pointless and just another "I want x to do y" sort of thing. They are different vehicles designed for different purposes and if you could zip over the planet surface and collect cargo faster than landing, deploying an SRV and doing it that way then you make the SRV mostly redundant - lets combine them and have flying SRV's then.

Then again, lets ask for big tundra wheels for our ships so we can drive them across the surface and do away with the need for either...

It probably would not make sense for the fighter to carry cargo (not unless you could transfer from SRV to fighter if landed). It would make sense for the fighter to have a combat or recon role in support of SRV's or attacking bases etc. I have not actually tried to launch a fighter on or near a planet surface yet but I assuming it is not possible?! I would leave the bays for the different roles as they are, they seem too specialist. Nice idea though!

I guess what I'd like to see is slightly more exciting surface recon vehicle. Something that is not made of glass and doesn't get stopped by every other rock on the planetary surface :) Surface glider, in short. But since Frontier are not planning to add any more surface vehicles they were saying they are going to add, using existing assets could be a solution here. It's a bit sad, really, that you'd like to suggest some nice and cool feature and you have no hopes they will ever do that, so you end up suggesting what is a place holder, in fact.
You'd have to be near surface to use it anyway. Yes, mid-flight, but not before you completed orbital cruise and glide. The vehicle itself would be faster than the current SRV, but the whole procedure not really.

As for "I want x to do y" point of thing is what the suggestions section is for, isn't it? So Frontier can gauge players' interest in various features and also have many points of view on that feature. They might never use the idea, but that doesn't mean we can't discuss it.

First video I've found:

Virander - Nice video found a few others yesterday aswell.

It would be nice to think going forward that frontier will work on new SRV's there are concept art of large rovers etc. Perhaps fighters could have builds more taylored to surface missions also as mentioned. It would be nice to think in the future missions could involve ships with fighters working with (and to block) SRV's. Maybe even large scale attacks on bases and raiding parties etc.

Eventually yes, probably more surface vehicles will pop up. But it's a shame they didn't choose something more exciting to test the waters. Or rather, they've made similar mistake as one other game development studio: they gave us MAKO as the first vehicle. OK, in all fairness, ED SRV drives a tiny bit better than MAKO (not by much). Still, I'm sometimes wondering if Frontier's developers are actually proper nerds. Proper nerds would have more imagination to create features with more oomph. We should put up a massive screen in front of FD headquarters and make them watch some good stuff to fuel their creativity and give them some courage to think bigger :)
